Current state of research and teaching activities

  • 人間のからだも地球の自然生態系も、本来の姿は実に優れた調節機構を持つメカニズムです。現代では、人間自身が生活のさらなる快適さを追求するあまり、それらのメカニズムは壊されつつあります。地球の温暖化やオゾン層破壊、生活習慣病の増加はその最たる例です。自然と人間が共存するための適度な快適(アメニティ)環境を創出するには、人間と自然の持つ本来のメカニズムとそれらを破壊するメカニズムの両方を理解することが大切です。私は、人間にとって快適な環境とはどうあるべきかという問題について、身体各器官の働きをコントロールしている自律神経に注目し、血圧や脈拍、脳波などの生理指標を用いた基礎的研究を進めています。そして、健康で豊かな生活を送るために必要なアメニティ環境のありかたを提言していくことを将来的な目標としています。 授業では、学科・大学院科目のほかに、全学共通教育科目のスポーツ健康科学科目を担当します。みなさんの健康や体力の維持・増進に関する諸問題についても共に取り組んでいきたいと考えています。

    Impression on biophilic designs influences the effects of indoor greening. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of different biophilic designs in office rooms on the psychological and physiological responses and the cognitive performance of office workers. Indoor greening rooms with Japanese and tropical designs were used along with the green-free (control) design in this study. The heart rate variability of the participants was not affected by green designs. However, there was improvement in impressions on tropical and Japanese designs in office rooms. In particular, the Japanese design was more effective in decreasing negative emotions than the tropical design. The electroencephalography during 5-min exposure to the greening designs showed limited frequency bands and regions of interest affected by the greenery design. Taken together with the psychological data, indoor greening with the tropical design promoted positive mood states. Meanwhile, indoor greening in the Japanese design, inhibited negative mood states. However, there were no significant differences between the two designs in terms of cognitive task performance. Hence, indoor greening increases neural efficiency during cognitive tasks.

  • Effects of an 8-Week Weekly Pilates Intervention on Central Nervous System Function

    This study aimed to clarify the changes in the central nervous system associated with Pilates intervention, focusing on its effects on brain function. We focused on the fluctuations in the theta and beta powers of the EEG recorded from the medial frontal cortex and evaluated the association between increased cognitive load and improved executive function. Of 25 healthy adult women with no previous Pilates experience, 12 (26.1 ± 9.6 years) were included in the intervention group who participated in Pilates lessons, and 13 (20.2 ± 1.9 years) were included in the control group who did not join Pilates lessons. The intervention group was given an exercise intervention with eight Pilates lessons for 60 min once a week. The experimental results showed a trend towards shorter reaction times (p = 0.089) in the Stroop task in the intervention group. When the change in power values (Δ) before and after the intervention was compared between the groups, a trend toward greater Δbeta power at Fz was observed in the intervention group than in the control group (p = 0.069). The results suggest that Pilates may contribute to improving mood and the ability of the central nervous system to process information. It may also be an effective exercise for preventing cognitive decline and maintaining mental health. [This study was supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number JP21K11423]

  • Effects of a Once-Weekly Pilates Intervention on Central Nervous System Activity and Mood

    Purpose: This study investigated the effects of an eight-week Pilates intervention, known as mind-body exercise, on cognitive function, brain activity (EEG), and mood in healthy adult women. Methods: Twenty-five healthy adult women were assigned to either the Pilates group (PG; n = 12) or the control group (CG; n = 13). The pre- and post-intervention assessments included the ruler drop test (both upper limbs) and EEG measurements during the Stroop task. The PG participated in 60-minute mat Pilates sessions once a week for eight weeks, with mood assessed before and after each session using the PANAS. Results: The PG showed a trend toward reduced reaction times in the Stroop task (P = 0.089), and significant increases in theta power at FC1 and FC2 (P = 0.034 and P = 0.005, respectively) in EEG. PANAS results indicated a significant increase in positive affect and a decrease in negative affect post-intervention (P < 0.05). Discussion: The eight-week Pilates intervention promoted frontal brain activity, enhanced cognitive processing efficiency, and improved mood. Future studies should examine the effects of different intervention frequencies and participants’ characteristics. Key words: Pilates, EEG, mood, cognitive function

  • Effects of cycling lane width on reaction time and P300 in concurrent cognitive tasks in older adults: comparison with younger adults

    Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of riding lane width on cognitive task performance between older and younger adults while performing a motor-cognitive dual task using a stationary bicycle simulator. Methods: Eleven healthy older adults and 11 young adults performed cognitive tasks in which they pressed a button in response to rare target tones embedded among standard tones while riding the simulator. For the motor task, they were asked to cycle at their usual speed and remain within a displayed lane width of 1.1, 0.825, or 0.55 m. Results and Discussion: In both groups, lane deviation time was significantly longer in the 0.55 m condition compared to the other two conditions. Regarding cognitive performance, reaction time was significantly longer for the 0.55 m and 0.825 m conditions in older adults only, whereas P300 latency was not affected by lane width in either group. In younger adults, the P300 amplitude was significantly lower in the 0.55 m condition than in the other two conditions; however, no such difference was observed in older adults. These results suggest that older adults adopt a cognitive task prioritization strategy to maintain cognitive resource allocation, even when movement difficulties increase.   • Effects of Aroma Diffusion in Virtual Reality Forest Bathing on Physiological and Psychological Indices Post-Stress Test

    Few studies on virtual reality (VR) forest bathing have included sensory stimulation other than visual and auditory stimulation. This study examined the relaxation effect of VR forest bathing with olfactory stimulation using cedar essential oil. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively), heart rate, and heart rate variability were measured as physiological indices, and positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA) were measured using the Japanese version of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). The Japanese version of the Restorative Outcome Scale (ROS) was used as a psychological index. Participants underwent a 15-minute psychosocial stress task (Trier Social Stress Test, TSST). They watched a forest video with added olfactory stimulation or a only forest video for 6 min using a VR head-mounted display. The results suggest that VR forest bathing relieved stress induced by TSST and improved mood, regardless of the addition of olfactory stimulation. Analysis of the time variability of SBP showed that the group with added olfactory stimulation had a lower recovery rate while watching the forest video than the group that watched only the forest video. Participants may have been unlikely to benefit from the physiological relaxing effects of cedar essential oil because they were not given prior information about the scent

  • Effects of equine-assisted activities on health-related quality of life in older adults
    59th Annual Conference of the Human Ergology Society
    A decline in the quality of life (QOL) among older adults can lead to frailty and increased social security costs. Health-related QOL, influenced by factors such as sex, mobility issues, sleep disorders, and social participation, is crucial for overall well-being. This study hypothesised that involvement in non-riding equine-assisted activities would improve health-related QOL in older adults. A non-randomised comparative trial was conducted with 36 healthy older adults, divided into equine-assisted activity and control groups over 8 weeks. The equine-assisted activity group participated in observing, feeding, and grooming horses. The health-related QOL, sleep quality, physical activity levels, and mood were also assessed. A two-way analysis of variance, considering time factors and participant group personnel, showed no significant interaction effects on health-related QOL, sleep quality, or physical activity levels. In contrast, a mood assessment comparing pre- and post-equine-assisted activities showed that the participants' positive mood significantly improved after the equine-assisted activity. In conclusion, this study highlights that non-riding equine-assisted activities can improve emotional well-being in older adults. However, further research is needed to explore their impact on health-related QOL and to identify effective integration strategies for these activities in older adult care.   • マットピラティスの効果とその運動強度〜実施中の心拍数と実施前後の血圧による検討
    日本体育測定評価学会第22回大会
    マットピラティス実施前後の血圧及び実施中の心拍数を測定し、ピラティスの効果とその運動強度を明らかにすることを目的とした。 収縮期血圧と拡張期血圧のいずれも実施前より実施後に有意に高い値を示した。しかし、約 2mmHg 程度と血圧の上昇は緩やかであった。ピラティスの運動強度は 3 メッツとされており、同程度の運動強度であるウォーキングや速歩よりも血圧の上昇が緩やかであるという先行研究と同様の結果となった。実施中の平均心拍数は、安静時及び実施後と比較して有意に高い値を示した。実施中の平均心拍数は84.3±12.3bpm であり、カルボーネン法による運動強度は 8.6±3.8%HRR と極めて低い強度であったことが、実施後の血圧上昇を緩やかにした要因の 1 つであると考えられる。一方、実施中の最大心拍数は 118.7±12.6bpm であり、35.5±8.4%HRR の強度に達することが明らかとなった。したがって、ピラティスはエクササイズの種目によって低強度から中等度強度まで柔軟に強度を調整できることから、低体力者や中高年者が安全に実施できるエクササイズであるといえる。
