  GHz burst mode femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, which consist of a series of pulse trains with ultra-fast intervals of several hundred picoseconds, have offered distinct features for material processing compared to conventional irradiation of laser pulses (single-pulse mode). We apply GHz burst mode processing to fabricate laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on the material surfaces. In our previous work for silicon (Si), we have found that GHz burst mode can create unique two-dimensional (2D) LIPSS composed of both parallel and perpendicular to the laser polarization direction. We proposed that the formation of 2D-LIPSS is attributed to the synergetic contributions of electromagnetic and hydrodynamic mechanisms. To further investigate more detailed formation mechanisms and explore practical applications, we employ titanium (Ti), whose properties are significantly different from Si. We demonstrate that GHz burst mode fs laser pulses (central wavelength: 1,030 nm, intra-pulse width: 230 fs, intra-pulse repetition rate (an intra-pulse interval): 4.88 GHz (205 ps) and burst pulse repetition rate: 10 kHz) can also fabricate 2D-LIPSS on Ti surfaces. We attribute the dominant formation mechanism of 2D-LIPSS to the generation of hot spots with highly enhanced electric fields due to transient change of material properties during GHz burst pulse irradiation. Based on this speculation, properly tailoring the shapes of the burst pulse with an optimum intra-pulse number enables the creation of well-defined 2D-LIPSS. Furthermore, essentially homogeneous 2D-LIPSS can be formed in a large area by laser scanning of a focused fs laser beam with a stage scanning speed of 5 mm/s.

• Enhancement of plasmonic coupling on Si metallized with intense femtosecond laser pulses

  Using a pump-probe technique, the reflectivity of a silicon grating surface irradiated with intense femtosecond (fs) laser pulses was measured as a function of the incidence angle and the delay time between pulses. After irradiating the surface with an intense s-polarized, 400 nm, 300 fs laser pulse, the reflectivity measured with a weak p-polarized, 800 nm, 100 fs laser pulse exhibited an abrupt decrease for an incidence angle of similar to 24(degrees). The depth of the dip was greatest for a delay time of 0.6-10 ps, for which the reflectivity around the dip was highest. The surface was also found to be ablated most strongly for the conditions causing the deepest dip for a delay time of 5-10 ps. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on silicon metallized by the intense pulse are resonantly excited by the subsequent pulse, and the strong coherent coupling between the subsequent pulse and SPPs excited on the molten Si surface produced by high-density free electrons induces strong surface ablation due to the intense plasmonic near-field. The results clearly show that fs pulses can be used to significantly modulate the nature of nonmetallic materials and could possibly serve as a basic tool for the excitation of SPPs on nonmetallic materials using ultrafast laser-matter interactions.

  We report the fine periodic nanostructure formation process on metal and semiconductor surfaces in air with few-cycle 7-fs laser pulses and its physical mechanism. Using appropriate peak power densities and scanning speeds for the laser pulses, nanostructures could be formed on stainless steel and gallium arsenide (GaAs) with periods of 60–110 nm and 130–165 nm, respectively, which are 1/5–1/4 of the period of nanostructures formed with 100-fs laser pulses. The periodicity can be explained as arising from the excitation of short-range propagating surface plasmon polaritons, and the observed periods are in good agreement with the model calculation results.

  For the practical use of femtosecond laser ablation, inputs of higher laser intensity are preferred to attain high-throughput material removal. However, the use of higher laser intensities for increasing ablation rates can have detrimental effects on ablation quality due to excess heat generation and air ionization. This paper employs ablation using BiBurst femtosecond laser pulses, which consist of multiple bursts (2 and 5 bursts) at a repetition rate of 64 MHz, each containing multiple intra-pulses (2-20 pulses) at an ultrafast repetition rate of 4.88 GHz, to overcome these conflicting conditions. Ablation of silicon substrates using the BiBurst mode with 5 burst pulses and 20 intra-pulses successfully prevents air breakdown at packet energies higher than the pulse energy inducing the air ionization by the conventional femtosecond laser pulse irradiation (single-pulse mode). As a result, ablation speed can be enhanced by a factor of 23 without deteriorating the ablation quality compared to that by the single-pulse mode ablation under the conditions where the air ionization is avoided.

• Two-dimensional laser-induced periodic surface structures formed on crystalline silicon by GHz burst mode femtosecond laser pulses

  Femtosecond laser pulses with GHz burst mode that consist of a series of trains of ultrashort laser pulses with a pulse interval of several hundred picoseconds offer distinct features in material processing that cannot be obtained by the conventional irradiation scheme of femtosecond laser pulses (single-pulse mode). However, most studies using the GHz burst mode femtosecond laser pulses focus on ablation of materials to achieve high-efficiency and high-quality material removal. In this study, we explore the ability of the GHz burst mode femtosecond laser processing to form laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on silicon. It is well known that the direction of LIPSS formed by the single-pulse mode with linearly polarized laser pulses is typically perpendicular to the laser polarization direction. In contrast, we find that the GHz burst mode femtosecond laser (wavelength: 1030 nm, intra-pulse duration: 220 fs, intra-pulse interval time (intra-pulse repetition rate): 205 ps (4.88 GHz), burst pulse repetition rate: 200 kHz) creates unique two-dimensional (2D) LIPSS. We regard the formation mechanism of 2D LIPSS as the synergetic contribution of the electromagnetic mechanism and the hydrodynamic mechanism. Specifically, generation of hot spots with highly enhanced electric fields by the localized surface plasmon resonance of subsequent pulses in the bursts within the nanogrooves of one-dimensional LIPSS formed by the preceding pulses creates 2D LIPSS. Additionally, hydrodynamic instability including convection flow determines the final structure of 2D LIPSS.

  It has been reported that periodic nanostructures with a period size of 200-330 nm can be formed on silicon suboxide (SiOx, x approximate to 1) with 800-nm, 100-fs laser pulses at a fluence much smaller than that needed for nanostructuring on glasses such as fused silica and borosilicate glass. We demonstrated that a homogeneous SiO2 nanostructure with a period of -240 nm can be produced using a two-step ablation process and heat treatment in air at 1000 degrees C for 144 hours.   Plasma medicine, a therapeutic technology that uses atmospheric-pressure plasma, is attracting much attention as an innovative tool for the medical field. Most of the plasma biomedical tools use direct effects, such as heat, optical stimulation, and reactive chemical species, on the lesion. Nanoparticulation techniques using indirect action by plasma, i.e., generation of electric fields, have the potential to be applied to promote transdermal absorption, where drugs pass through the barrier function of skin and penetrate into internal tissues. Here, we show a method to directly generate the nano-sized mist by passing a solution through the dielectric barrier discharge. This method enables us to produce the mist potentially in the nanometer size range for both water-based and oil-based solutions. Ease of mist generation was influenced by the plasma-induced changes in physical and chemical characteristics, including electrical conductivity, viscosity, and chemical species. We anticipate the developed method for nano-sized mist generation to provide a technique in the applications of the transdermal absorption system, including those related to pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

  We have demonstrated that intense 7-fs, similar to 810-nm laser pulses can produce a much finer periodic nanostructure on a diamond-like carbon film through ablation in air than that formed with intense 100-fs, similar to 800-nm laser pulses. The minimum period size is similar to 60nm, corresponding to similar to 1/13 of the center wavelength. To understand the physical mechanism responsible for the finer nanostructuring, we have observed a bonding structural change in the nanostructure with micro-Raman spectroscopy and a scanning transmission electron microscope. It has been found that the modified layer thickness with the 7-fs pulses is much thinner than that with the 100-fs pulses. The results show that the 7-fs pulses create a few-nm-thick layer with high-density electrons and excite short-range surface plasmon polaritons, which have a large wave number around the layer and induce the plasmonic near-field nanoablation. The period size estimated by using a model target reproduces well the observed size of nanostructures.

  Silicon suboxide (SiOx,x approximate to 1) is a substoichiometric silicon oxide with a large refractive index and optical absorption coefficient that oxidizes to silica (SiO2) by annealing in air at similar to 1000 degrees C. We demonstrate that nanostructures with a groove period of 200-330 nm can be formed in air on a silicon suboxide film with 800 nm, 100 fs, and 10 Hz laser pulses at a fluence an order of magnitude lower than that needed for glass materials such as fused silica and borosilicate glass. Experimental results show that high-density electrons can be produced with low-fluence femtosecond laser pulses, and plasmonic near-fields are subsequently excited to create nanostructures on the surface because silicon suboxide has a larger optical absorption coefficient than glass. Calculations using a model target reproduce the observed groove periods well and explain the mechanism of the nanostructure formation.

  Using the two-step ablation process with femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, a homogeneous nanograting with a uniform period was formed on the stainless steel. The surface color was evaluated with a photograph taken as functions of an incident angle of white light and an observation angle. We have found that the color has more variation and brightness than that of the surface with a non-uniform periodic nanostructure produced with the single-beam fs laser pulses. The results show that the nanograting can spatially disperse well the incident light into individual wavelength owing to the diffraction with high efficiency. Calculation using the grating equation reproduced the characteristic change of the colors observed as functions of these angles.   Using intense p-polarized 100-femtosecond laser pulses, the reflectivity of a silicon grating was measured in air as a function of the incident angle. The angular dependent reflectivity was observed to abruptly decrease to create a sharp dip at a specific incident angle, representing the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) induced on the grating. We have found that the sharpness of the dip increases with increasing the laser fluence. The experimental results show that the increase in the laser fluence produces a higher density of free electrons in the surface and decreases the plasmon damping to enhance the SPR. The calculated reflectivity reproduces well the increase in the dip sharpness with increasing the electron density in the silicon grating surface. (C) 2019 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

  This study reports the results of experiments on periodic nanostructure formation on diamond-like carbon (DLC) films induced with 800 nm, 7-femtosecond (fs) laser pulses at low fluence from a Ti:sapphire laser oscillator. It was demonstrated that 7-fs laser pulses with a high power density of 0.8-2 TW/cm(2) at a low fluence of 5-12 mJ/cm(2) can form a periodic nanostructure with a period of 60-80 nm on DLC films. The period decreases with increasing fluence of the laser pulses. The experimental results and calculations for a model target show that 7-fs pulses can produce a thinner metal-like layer on the DLC film through a nonlinear optical absorption process compared with that produced with 100-fs pulses, creating a finer nanostructure via plasmonic near-field ablation.

  We report the experimental observation of anomalies appearing in the reflection of intense p-polarized 100-femtosecond (fs) laser pulses at a nonmetallic material surface with a grating structure. The reflectivity was measured in air as a function of the angle of incidence at a Si grating. The results have exhibited an abrupt decrease to create a sharp dip at a specific incident angle of similar to 24 degrees, where the grating surface was deeply ablated along the edge of the grooves. Similar to the so-called Wood's anomalies, the observed angle-dependent reflectivity provides direct evidence that surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can resonantly be excited at the interface between air and the nonmetallic material surface, as the intense fs laser pulse produces a high density of free electrons to form a metal-like layer on the Si grating surface. Calculation for a model target reproduces well the experimental results to confirm the excitation of SPPs on the Si grating, demonstrating the generation of enhanced near fields for the periodic ablation of a target surface.

• 農工大、フェムト秒レーザーでシリコン表面に電子の集団振動現象を観測
  東京農工大学が、シリコン表面に高強度のフェムト秒レーザーパルスを照射することによって、光と結合した電子の集団振動現象である表面プラズモンポラリトンの発生を観測することに成功したと発表したことが紹介される。
