Acoustically induced electric and magnetic polarizations and their sensing applicationsIkushima, Kenji

A measurement technique for detecting acoustically induced polarization is reviewed. Ultrasonic irradiation can generate alternating electric or magnetic polarization in materials via electromechanical or magnetomechanical coupling, respectively, and electromagnetic fields are often emitted to the surrounding environment when materials are acoustically stimulated. The linear response of the acoustically stimulated electromagnetic (ASEM) field is detected by a resonant antenna tuned to the ultrasound frequency. The ASEM response is generated in not only inorganic crystals but also biological tissues such as bones, tendons, and the aortic wall. The response signal is well explained by stress-induced electric polarization, which depends on the crystallinity of fibrous proteins. Ultrasound can temporally modulates the magnetic polarization (magnetization) in ferromagnetic materials, resulting in magnetic imaging and hysteresis measurements via ultrasonic stimulation. Therefore, probing ASEM responses opens possibilities for unique noninvasive sensing in medicine and industry.

Residual stress is one factor involved in the degradation and damage of industrial products. It is important to understand the magnitude and distribution of residual stress to maintain the integrity of a product. Magnetic measurements are a potential nondestructive method for evaluating residual stress in steel because the hysteresis properties are sensitive to stress. In recent years, spatial mapping of local magnetic hysteresis loop has been performed by using the acoustically stimulated electromagnetic (ASEM) method, which obtains the conversion coefficients from local hysteresis parameters to tensile stress. In this study, we demonstrate the evaluation and spatial imaging of tensile residual stress through local hysteresis parameters using welded steel specimens. We confirm that local coercivity can be used for evaluating residual tensile stress in the high-stress region. In addition, the spatial distribution of residual stress is well visualized by imaging the ASEM response signals due to remanent magnetization.

The refractive index and the extinction coefficient are usually inherent (noncontrollable) material characteristics. Recently, it was reported that the reflectivity of graphene in the mid-infrared spectral range can be modified by an external bias. This report attracted much attention, but the controllable frequency/energy range is too narrow for possible applications. In this work, it is demonstrated that the potential of graphene is not limited to mid-infrared wavelengths, but spans a much wider range including the visible spectral range. Here, back-gated bilayer graphene is characterized in air using spectroscopic ellipsometry with a lateral resolution in the micrometer range. By applying a back-gate voltage, the dielectric function can be modified in a broad spectral range, including the visible spectrum. To explain the change in the dielectric function, a simplified phenomenological approach which assumes that the back-gating-induced change in the carrier density of graphene can be described by a modified 2D Drude model is introduced. The trend of increasing values for the dielectric function with increasing sheet charge carrier density is confirmed by theoretical calculations performed in the independent particle picture.

Acoustically stimulated electromagnetic (ASEM) waves in thin steel sheets have been investigated for flaw detection. In the ASEM wave technique, magnetization is temporally modulated at the radio frequency (rf) of the irradiated ultrasonic waves through magnetomechanical coupling. The induced rf magnetic fields are detected by a resonant coil antenna and spatial images are obtained by scanning the ultrasound focal spot. In this work, we detected artificial defects (through holes) in thin steel sheets. Specific patterns of magnetic flux density caused by the hole were observed. By improving the sensitivity with a small coil antenna, we visualized a through hole 0.1 mm in diameter with a lift-off of 10 mm.

Magnetic hysteresis properties are sensitive to stress in ferromagnetic materials. This suggests that magnetic measurements are a potential method to evaluate residual stress in steel products. Nevertheless, nondestructive inspection of residual stress by using magnetic properties has been limited, because bulk properties over the entire sample are usually obtained in conventional hysteresis curve measurements through electromagnetic induction, thus, local hysteresis properties are not measured. However, the spatial mapping of local hysteresis properties has been demonstrated recently by ultrasound focusing and scanning. This technique is based on the generation and detection of the acoustically stimulated electromagnetic (ASEM) response. In this study, we investigate the stress dependence of local hysteresis loops through the ASEM response using a tensile testing machine and provide conversion coefficients to estimate tensile stress from the values of local hysteresis properties. The results indicate that the hysteresis properties associated with coercivity, remanent magnetization, and hysteresis loss are promising parameters as an index for evaluating residual stress.

Some mechanical property parameters of steel corrosion products require detailed examination in order to analyze cracking process of concrete with numerical models. Microstructural and micromechanical investigations on corrosion products were performed by combined analysis by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and nano-indentation techniques. The corrosion products were identified to be goethite, lepidocrocite, akaganeite, maghemite and magnetite. The local Young's modulus values varied between 54 and 110 GPa, while the local nanohardness values varied between 1.9 and 8.3 GPa. Typical Young's modulus and nanohardness of each phase have been determined.

Electric Polarization of Soft Biological Tissues Induced by Ultrasound WavesIkushima, Kenji; Kumamoto, Takashi; Ito, Kenshiro; Anzai, Yamato

Ultrasound irradiation makes it possible to generate alternating electric polarization through the electromechanical coupling of materials. It follows that electromagnetic fields are often emitted to the surrounding environment when materials are acoustically stimulated. We investigate the acoustically stimulated electromagnetic (ASEM) response of soft biological tissues. The ASEM signal is detected through a capacitive resonant antenna tuned to the MHz frequency of the irradiated ultrasound waves. The signal is well explained by the stress-induced polarization, which responds linearly to the applied acoustic stress. Induced polarization is clearly observed in the Achilles tendon, aortic wall, and aortic valve samples, whereas it is small in adipose tissue and myocardium samples, indicating that fibrous tissues exhibit electromechanical coupling.

In a two dimensional electron gas, low energy transport in presence of a magnetic field occurs in chiral 1D channels located on the edge of the sample. In the AC description of quantum transport, the emittance determines the amplitude of the imaginary part of the admittance, whose sign and physical meaning are determined by the sample topology: a Hall bar is inductive while a Corbino ring is capacitive. In this article, the perfect capacitive character of Corbino samples in the quantum Hall effect regime is shown. A vanishing conductance and an electrochemical capacitance which depends on the density of states of 1D channels are measured. Our samples have no gate, neither on the side nor on the top, and the inner capacitances are measured. The transit time of electrons across the device is obtained and the drift velocity of carriers is deduced.

The signal of acoustically stimulated electromagnetic (ASEM) response have been investigated in steel. In the ASEM method, ultrasonic and electromagnetic techniques are used. Magnetization is modulated with the radio frequency (RF) of irradiated ultrasonic waves through magnetomechanical coupling. The signal amplitude of ASEM waves is determined by the magnitude of piezomagnetic phenomenon which is acoustically excited locally. The induced RF magnetic fields are detected by a resonant coil antenna. Here, we applied the ASEM method to detect defects on thin steel sheets. If there is a defect in a steel sheet at a constant magnetization, magnetic flux density distribution around the defect is different from that of sound area. This difference can be detected through the ASEM method. Using a small antenna, 5 mm in diameter and 10 mm at liftoff, we can detect a 0.1 mm through hole in a steel sheet at 0.16 mm in thickness.

The signal amplitude and the phase of acoustically stimulated electromagnetic (ASEM) response have been investigated in steel. In the ASEM method, magnetization is temporally modulated with the radio frequency (rf) of irradiated ultrasonic waves through magnetomechanical coupling. The first-harmonic components of the induced rf dipolar magnetic fields are detected using a resonant loop antenna. The signal amplitude of ASEM waves is determined by the magnitude of local piezomagnetic coefficients on an acoustically excited spot. Here, we divided the ASEM waves into the ”in-phase” and ”quadrature” components by phase-sensitive detection (PSD). On the basis of the linear response theory, we provided the theoretical formalism of ASEM response by introducing local complex piezomagnetic coefficients, d(loc) = d '+ id ''. We investigated the magnetic field (H) dependence of the individual components on the different surface conditions of steel plates. The in-phase component [alpha d '(H)] shows a hysteresis loop on the machined surface of a steel plate, in which d '(H) switches sign at two finite field values, +/- H-0. The inversion of magnetization associated with the applied static fields is thus definitely observed in the PSD measurements. In addition, we measured the hysteresis behaviors on a steel surface with a thin mill scale (iron oxide layers). The hysteresis loop broadens and a significant contribution of the quadrature component [alpha d ''(H)] is found. We discuss the origin of the hysteresis behaviors of d ' and d '' using the Debye relaxation model. (C) 2018 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

The characteristics of a charge-sensitive infrared phototransistor (CSIP) based on a GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum-well (QW) structure are studied under a magnetic field. In the CSIP, the upper QWs serve as a floating gate that is charged by photoexcitation. The photoinduced charges are detected using the resistance of the lowest QW conducting channel. The conducting channel exhibits the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in a perpendicular high magnetic field, yielding the magnetic field dependence of the terahertz (THz) response Delta R. We found two different features of Delta R. One is that Delta R switches sign across the QHE plateau, which is explained simply by an increased electron density in the conducting channel. The other feature is observed as an enhanced positive Delta R when a potential barrier is formed in the conducting channel. The latter mechanism can be interpreted as the promotion of edge/bulk scattering due to photoinduced charges. These findings suggest ways to enhance the THz response by using magnetic fields and potential barriers. (C) 2018 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

We have developed a hybrid quantum Hall midinfrared (QHMIR)-quantum Hall far-infrared (QHFIR) photodetector by the use of graphene-GaAs/(Al; Ga)As-layered composite material. Both MIR and FIR photoresistance are observed in a single chip by utilizing cyclotron resonance in the quantum Hall regimes of graphene and two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in GaAs/(Al; Ga) As heterostructure, respectively. By cooperatively operating 2DEG as a back-gate electrode to change the carrier density of graphene or graphene as a top-gate electrode to modulate the carrier density of 2DEG with an applied gate voltage less than 1 V and applying the magnetic field to tune cyclotron resonance, we achieve a wide frequency selectivity, covering 640-790 cm(-1) for the graphene-QHMIR detector and 24-89 cm(-1) for the 2DEG-QHFIR detector. Moreover, our design integrates a log-periodic antenna with the detector to minimize the device size, while preserving high sensitivity. Our results pave the way for implementing a highly tunable MIR-to-FIR photodetector and a dual-band (MIR-FIR) imaging array.
