Current state of research and teaching activities

  • Water, agriculture and ecosystems are the main components in my research activity. The aims of my research is to take a balance between the three components for better water resources management, leading to improved agricultural production and enhanced ecosystem services. To this end, field observation data will be analyzed and used further for modelling. Through joint activities with my international colleagues, I hope that I can promote young scientists and students to develop their ability to work in a global setting.

    農業生産性の向上と自然環境との調和を考える際には、流域の水循環特性を理解したうえで、河川~水路~農地の連続性について考える必要があります。農業-水-生態系の複雑な関係性の解析には、理論に基づくプロセスベースモデルとともに、実測データに基づくデータ駆動モデルを駆使することが有効です。特に、新規計測技術を用いることで、これまでにないデータが収集できるようになっており、新たらしい発見と現象への理解深化が期待できます。

  • Measuring the flight trajectory of a free-flying moth on the basis of noise-reduced 3D point cloud time series data

    Pest control is crucial in crop production; however, the use of chemical pesticides, the primary method of pest control, poses environmental issues and leads to insecticide resistance in pests. To overcome these issues, laser zapping has been studied as a clean pest control technology against the nocturnal cotton leafworm, Spodoptera litura, which has high fecundity and causes severe damage to various crops. For better sighting during laser zapping, it is important to measure the coordinates and speed of moths under low-light conditions. To achieve this, we developed an automatic detection pipeline based on point cloud time series data from stereoscopic images. We obtained 3D point cloud data from disparity images recorded under infrared and low-light conditions. To identify S. litura, we removed noise from the data using multiple filters and a support vector machine. We then computed the size of the outline box and directional angle of the 3D point cloud time series to determine the noisy point clouds. We visually inspected the flight trajectories and found that the size of the outline box and the movement direction were good indicators of noisy data. After removing noisy data, we obtained 68 flight trajectories, and the average flight speed of free-flying S. litura was 1.81 m/s.

  • Temporal variables improve a spatiotemporal species distribution model for the non-native freshwater fish Candidia temminckii

    Ecosystem conservation requires a deeper understanding of species -habitat relationships and population dynamics at a fine spatiotemporal resolution. We propose a new distribution modeling method based on a 5 -year monthly survey that considers the temporal continuity of species distributions and physical habitat datasets by inputting continuous time -related variables. We employed random forests to relate the presence/absence of the non-native freshwater fish Candidia temminckii to physical habitat data at 15 sampling sites along a 1.4 km spring -fed river in Japan. The proposed method outperforms all conventional methods using datasets split into a specific time period to incorporate temporality into the model. The order of variable importance and shape of the partial dependence plots of the proposed method reflect species ecology and show a gradual shift over time compared to the conventional methods. These results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method to species distribution modeling using fine -scale spatiotemporal data.

  • A Machine Learning-Assisted Three-Dimensional Image Analysis for Weight Estimation of Radish

    The quality of radish roots depends largely on its cultivar, production environment, and postharvest management along the supply chain. Quality monitoring of fresh products is of utmost importance during the postharvest period. The purpose of this study is to nondestructively estimate the weight of a radish using random forests based on color and shape information obtained from images, as well as volumetric information obtained by analyzing a point cloud obtained by combining multiple forms of shape information. The explanatory variables were color and shape information obtained through an image analysis of still images of radishes captured in a constructed photographic environment. The volume information was calculated from the bounding box and convex hull applied to the point cloud by combining the shape information obtained from the image analysis. We then applied random forests to relate the radish weight to the explanatory variables. The experimental results showed that the models using color, shape, or volume information all exhibited good performance with a Pearson's correlation coefficient (COR) >= 0.80, suggesting the potential of nondestructive monitoring of radish weight based on color, shape, and volume information. Specifically, the model using volume information showed very high performance, with a COR of 0.95 or higher.

  • Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology develops highly accurate method for predicting the distribution of the freshwater fish, Kawamatsu
    Graduate Student Taichi Jibiki (currently at Pacific Consultants) of the Agricultural Engineering and Agro-Food informatics Course, the Department of Agriculture of the same university, announced that they have developed a species distribution model that can accurately predict the distribution of the Japanese river crucian carp "Kawamutsu", and alien freshwater fish species in Japan.
