  • Quantification of 288 K local photothermal heating and miniaturization in Si plasmonic waveguides integrated with resonators

    We report the design and fabrication of Si plasmonic waveguide local heaters with ring resonators. Quantification of the local temperature rise is reported through analysis based on the thermo-optic effect, and the heaters can be miniaturized by introducing a stronger interaction between the propagating light and matter. The resonance wavelength in the waveguide heater was shifted toward a longer wavelength by injecting TM mode light, and the shift was proportional to the light intensity. The local temperature rise was 288 K upon inputting 6.3 mW light, and the photothermal conversion efficiency was as high as 46.1 K mW(-1) in a Si plasmonic waveguide loaded with 30 nm thick and 1 mu m long Co thin films, showing improved characteristics compared with previous devices. Investigation toward achieving a higher efficiency is discussed based on simulation and experimental results, for realizing photothermal waveguide heaters with smaller sizes and lower input power for various applications.

  • Magneto-Optics Effects: New Trends and Future Prospects for Technological Developments

    Magneto-optics (MO) is an effervescent research field, with a wide range of potential industrial applications including sensing, theranostics, pharmaceutics, magnetometry, and spectroscopy, among others. This review discusses the historical development, from the discovery of MO effects up to the most recent application trends. In addition to the consolidated fields of magnetoplasmonic sensing and modulation of optical signals, we describe novel MO materials, phenomena, and applications. We also identified the emerging field of all-dielectric magnetophotonics, which hold promise to overcome dissipation from metallic inclusions in plasmonic nanostructures. Moreover, we identified some challenges, such as the need to merge magneto-chiroptical effects with microfluidics technology, for chiral sensing and enantioseparation of drugs in the pharmaceutical industry. Other potential industrial applications are discussed in light of recent research achievements in the available literature.

  • 221 K Local Photothermal Heating in a Si Plasmonic Waveguide Loaded with a Co Thin Film

    Photothermal heaters are important devices for optical switches and memories based on the thermo-optic/magneto-optic effect and phase change materials. We demonstrated photothermal heating in Si plasmonic waveguides loaded with Co thin films by measuring the resistance change upon inputting transverse-magnetic (TM) mode light. Temperature rise is proportional to the light intensity with clear polarization dependence. The photothermal conversion efficiency was estimated at 36 K/mW and maximum temperature rise was estimated at 221 K at steady state upon the inputting 6.3 mW TM mode light for the 400 nm-wide, 8 mu m-long and 189 nm-thick Co film deposited on the Si wire waveguide with 129 nm-thick SiO2 buffer layer. The method to increase the efficiency is discussed based on the experimental and simulation results considering the thickness of the SiO2 buffer layer, Co layer and Si core layer, waveguide width, and wavelength. Local photothermal heaters in this study can be applied to a variety of fields including optical switches/memories without electrical control signals in photonic integrated circuits, on-chip optical sensors, and a lab-on-a-chip in biology, chemistry, and medicine.

  • Modulation of surface plasmon resonance by magnetization reversal in Au/Fe/Au trilayer and wedge structure for achieving higher refractive index sensitivity

    We report enhancement of the transverse magneto-optic Kerr effect (TMOKE) in Au/Fe/Au trilayers for improving the refractive index (RI) sensitivity in surface plasmon resonance sensors by magnetic modulation. The thicknesses of the upper Au layer, the Fe layer and the lower Au layer with required thickness resolution were theoretically optimized to maximize the TMOKE intensity with perfect momentum matching, and 3% TMOKE intensity was obtained in a trilayer. Furthermore, a wedge-shaped Au thin film was fabricated on a glass substrate, and the incident angle showing minimum reflectivity was modulated, corresponding to a difference in momentum matching. Resolution of the metal layer thickness (0.26 nm) was demonstrated in a single sensor chip for maximizing the TMOKE intensity. Enhanced RI resolution is expected in sensor chips formed of a Au/Fe/wedge Au trilayer, which will contribute to improvements in the limit of detection when measuring the analytes by analyzing the resulting signals.

    Al2O3/SiO2/Fe/Au structures with different Fe thicknesses were fabricated using different deposition techniques. Due to the cutoff condition of surface plasmon polaritons in the double-layer dielectric structure and magneto-optical effect, the reflectivity spectra show a minimum and its angular and wavelength positions can be modulated by the magnetic field. For thin Fe layers, the magnetic field modulates mainly the angular position, whereas for thick Fe layers both wavelength and angular positions are modulated. The proposed structure and the angular and wavelength dependence suggest two feasibilities of (1) two selectable interrogation modes: whereas for structures with thin Fe layers angular interrogation mode is preferred, with thick Fe layers wavelength interrogation mode is more appropriate, and (2) discrimination of analyte in the complex space: the refractive shift in the real part would dominantly appear in the angular interrogation, while the imaginary part in the wavelength interrogation.

  • Plasmonic isolator for photonic integrated circuits

    This article discusses recent studies of on-chip integration of a plasmonic isolator on a Si substrate and a hybrid isolator on an InP substrate. The key characteristics of the plasmonic isolator are reviewed and future prospects are discussed. A method to enhance the magneto-optical figure of merit (FOM) and reduce the propagation loss of a surface plasmon in order to realize the proposed design of the plasmonic isolator is described. One hundred percent enhancement of the FOM and 20x reduction of propagation loss in the optimized ferromagnetic plasmonic structure are experimentally demonstrated.

  • Optimization of figure of merit in magnetoplasmonic waveguides with Fe/Au multilayer for optical isolator based on nonreciprocal coupling on Si waveguides

    We report on magnetoplasmonic Si waveguides with a ferromagnetic Fe/conductive metal Au multilayer for realizing a sizable magnetooptic effect with a low propagation loss for integrated optical isolators. By combining the ferromagnetic metal Fe with a highly conductive Au layer, the largest nonreciprocal differences in effective index were estimated for propagation lengths of 1-20 mu m. Mode analysis with and without a Au layer clarified that the insertion of a Au layer on an Fe layer improves the optical confinement in the Fe layer with reduced propagation loss and is effective in enlarging the magnetooptic effect for the same propagation length. On the basis of the optimized Fe/Au multilayer structure, we designed waveguide optical isolators based on nonreciprocal coupling by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. We estimated an optical isolation of 10.8 dB with a forward insertion loss of 13.4 dB in a 34-mu m-long nonreciprocal directional coupler. (C) 2018 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

  • Nonreciprocal dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides using magneto-optical effect of Fe

    We have implemented the nonreciprocal propagation capabilities into plasmonic waveguides and have simulated the performances. We employed dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide (DLSPPW) and long-range DLSPPW (LR-DLSPPW) configurations, where ferromagnetic-metal Fe is used instead of noble metals in order to obtain nonreciprocal propagations by the transverse magneto-optical (MO) effect. The nonreciprocal performances were characterized by the finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method in terms of the propagation losses in return for the nonreciprocal phase shift (NRPS) and nonreciprocal propagation loss (NRL). The NRPS and NRL of the DLSPPW configuration are larger than those of the previously reported semiconductor waveguide optical isolators owing to the large MO constant of Fe and the field confinement by surface plasmons although the propagation loss for NRL of 1 dB is at least 31 dB and the propagation length is limited to less than 10 mu m. To reduce such a large propagation loss, we introduced the LR-DLSPPW configuration composed of Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) ridge and Benzocyclobutene (BCB) buffer layer. The Fe layer thickness and width are optimized to 50 nm and 500 nm, respectively, so that sizable MO effect and low propagation loss coexist. The propagation loss for NRL of 1 dB is suppressed to similar to 10 dB within a waveguide length of similar to 56 mu m. Our comprehensive investigation offers fundamental information on practical magneto-plasmonic waveguides and how much nonreciprocal performances are expected, providing an insight into the integration of magneto-plasmonics with on-chip photonics and electronics.   • シリコン光回路とコバルトを組み合わせた超小型ヒーター、農工大が開発
    東京農工大学の清水大雅准教授らの研究チームが、遷移金属のコバルト(Co)を積層したシリコン(Si)光導波路(Siプラズモニック導波路)に光が到達し、吸収された光が発熱する際の温度上昇を金属の抵抗の変化を測定することにより明らかにし、それを活用した局所加熱ヒーターの開発に成功したことを発表したことが紹介される。

    導波路型光アイソレータは端面発光型半導体レーザとのモノリシック集積化や高機能光集積回路の実現が可能になることから、その実現が望まれている。非相反損失変化型の導波路型光アイソレータは、半導体光増幅器に強磁性金属を蒸着するだけという簡易なデバイス構成ですみ、これまで理論的に提案されてきたが、実証例はなかった。我々はInGaAsP半導体光増幅器をハイメサ導波路に加工し、側壁にFe薄膜を蒸着することにより、波長1560nmのTEモード光に対して9.3dB/mmの非相反損失効果を観測することに世界で初めて成功した。これにより従来困難であった、半導体レーザと光アイソレータの集積化が可能になると考えられる。
