Current state of research and teaching activities

  • 私たちは、温度が高い状態を”熱い”、低い状態を”冷たい”と呼びますが、固体分子レベルでみるとこの温度の高低は、各分子の安定結合位置回りの振動エネルギーに対応します。物の温度を下げたいとき風を当てて冷ますとき、物体表面分子の振動が空気分子に運動エネルギーを与え、物体からエネルギーが奪われ、物体の温度は下がるのです(熱伝達)。また、物体内部でも温度分布がある場合には分子の振動エネルギーの不均一をなくす方向に振動エネルギーは伝わります(熱伝導)。エネルギーは光(電磁波)の形でも伝わります。太陽の光を浴びると暖かく感じるのは、太陽光線のエネルギーが皮膚で熱的な分子の振動エネルギーに変換されるためです(放射)。温度差がある物体間のエネルギーの移動を伝熱と呼び、ここで説明した熱伝達、熱伝導、放射は伝熱の3形態と呼ばれています。航空機用ジェットエンジン、スーパーコンピュータ、高機能新材料などの開発には、必ず伝熱の問題が存在し、その伝熱問題を解決することで最先端のハイテク機器は実用化されているのです。私たちの研究室では、このような伝熱現象について、様々な手法を用いて研究を行っています。

    This study investigated effects of flow pulsation on heat transfer performance of the surface with teardrop-shaped dimples. The flow structures and heat transfer characteristics were simulated by large eddy simulation with a Lagrangian dynamic sub-grid scale model. The cases of steady flow and pulsating flow (the Strouhal number of 0.3 and rms velocity amplitude normalized by bulk velocity of 0.14) were examined for dimple inclination angle of 30 deg, 45 deg, and 60 deg with in-line arrangements and for the bulk Reynolds number of 25,000. Surfaceaveraged results indicated that the flow pulsation increased the Nusselt number ratio by 9-12 %, the friction factor by 18-21 %, and the heat transfer efficiency index by 3-6 %. Using the phase-averaged results, it was clarified that the increased Nusselt number was due to the appearance and disappearance of flow-separation bubbles induced by the flow pulsation at the leading edge of inclined dimples and the time-averaged swirling flow intensity was well correlated with the surface-averaged Nusselt number and the friction factor.

    This study focuses on the heat transfer performance of a pulsating flow over a channel surface with teardrop-shaped dimples. Heat transfer measurements were performed by a transient technique with compensation of three-dimensional heat conduction under a bulk Reynolds number of 25,000. Seven types of surfaces with the teardrop-shaped dimples were examined, where dimple arrangement (in-line/staggered) and inclination angle (0-60 deg) were varied. A pulsating flow with the Strouhal number of 0.15 was generated by vibrating a rubber film section on the channel wall using a vibration generator. The pulsation amplitude was evaluated by calculating the root-mean-square value of the phase averaged velocity. Two conditions of the pulsation amplitudes were examined (0.09 and 0.12 of mean velocity). The results showed that the surface-averaged Nusselt number and friction factor for the pulsating flow increased from those for the steady flow. The highest increases of the surface-averaged Nusselt number and heat transfer efficiency index appeared in the 30 deg in-line arrangement, and those were 16.1% and 9.8%, respectively, at most as compared with the steady case. Due to the flow pulsation, the local Nusselt number was enhanced at the leading-edge region of the dimples, and supplementary Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)/unsteady RANS (URANS) results showed that the flow separation size was shrunk by the flow pulsation there.

    Large eddy simulation was performed to investigate heat transfer performance of a pulsating flow over teardrop-shaped dimples. A total of six geometries of dimpled surfaces were examined for dimple arrangements of in-line/staggered/original and dimple inclination angle of 0-60 deg. Pulsating flows were generated by sinusoidally varying the volume-averaged velocity. The pulsation frequency and amplitude were changed for the Strouhal number of 0-0.60 and the root-mean-square velocity amplitude normalized by the bulk flow velocity of 0-0.14. The results showed that the surface-averaged Nusselt number and friction factor were larger for the pulsating flow case than for the steady flow case. The surface-averaged Nusselt number ratio and the friction factor increased with the Strouhal number up to the Strouhal number of 0.30. For the Strouhal number larger than 0.30, they decreased with the Strouhal number or stayed almost constant. Consequently, the heat transfer efficiency index increased with the Strouhal number. The increase in the local Nusselt number ratio due to the flow pulsation was observed at the leading-edge region of the dimples. The results of the streamlines near the dimple showed that the swirling separation bubble was located closer to the leading-edge region due to the pulsation, which resulted in the increase of the absolute values of the turbulent heat flux and the local Nusselt number ratio.

    The spatiotemporal development of turbulent pipe flows with various conditions of pulsation is predicted by deep learning. In the present model, convolutional autoencoder (CAE) extracts the spatial features of the input as latent space vectors and long short-term memory (LSTM) evolves them in time. Time-delay neural network (TDNN) is accompanied by LSTMs to treat general unsteady variations of the spatial mean pressure gradient of the pulsatile flows. Temporal evolution is processed in a sequence-to-sequence manner. Note that the pulsating turbulent pipe flows are statistically unsteady flows for which the spatiotemporal development has been seldom predicted by the deep learning technique. The flow field obtained by direct numerical simulation (DNS) was used to train the model. When the pulsating parameters for the training and prediction are the same, several model parameters are validated. To examine further generalization capability, the present model was trained by data from four pulsation conditions. The model was tested afterward by test data from twenty different pulsation conditions of which the range of parameters is either within or out of the range covered by the training data. The model successfully predicts the various pulsating flow fields with reasonable accuracy. The change in the period yields a larger influence on prediction accuracy than the change in the amplitude. The degradation of the prediction accuracy of the bulk velocity for the case with a long period and large amplitude is not caused by the latent space vectors themselves, but by the decoder which reconstructs the flow field from the latent space vectors.

    Direct numerical simulations of laminar boundary layer flow on a flat plate with arrays of tetrahedral vortex generators (VGs) for heat transfer enhancement have been carried out to investigate the influence of mainstream angle to the VG arrays. The Nusselt number is highly correlated with the mainstream angle and the highest heat transfer effect is observed when the mainstream angle equals 60 degrees. Based on the analysis of each term of Reynolds-averaged energy equation, it is revealed that the advection induced by a pair of vortices is the dominant factor when the yaw angle equals zero degrees, whereas the heat transfer is enhanced by a turbulent component as the mainstream angle increases. In addition, installing multiple VGs in the longitudinal direction leads to higher heat transfer enhancement effect, which is remarkable when VGs are aligned in the mainstream direction.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd.     The efficiency, reliability, and safety of aircraft have been improved by substituting hydraulic and mechanical systems with electric systems. Furthermore, in future electric aircraft, where fan-driving engines are partially replaced by electric motors, solving the thermal management of heat generation from the motor-controlling power-devices will become a crucial problem. In this study, three-dimensional steady thermal network analysis (TNA) was carried out to analyze the temperature field in a heat sink, for motor-controller air cooling, which is expected to be used for the future electric aircraft. The numerical procedure used was verified by comparing the results of TNA with those of three-dimensional fluid-solid conjugate heat transfer analysis using finite volume method. After the verification, TNA was carried out for an aircraft flight scenario, where the optimum geometry of the heat sink was investigated, minimizing the following three objective functions: the pressure loss of air flow through the heat sink, the maximum local wall temperature of the heat sink at the surface of motor controller, and the weight of the heat sink. In this multi-objective optimization, the design of experiments technique was used to decide the space-filling points for the six design parameters. The three objective functions at each sampling point were calculated using TNA. A response surface was created for each objective function. A multi-objective optimization on the response surfaces, using a genetic algorithm, was iteratively carried out to find the Pareto optimal solutions for the air- cooled multi-stage heat sink. From the results of the Pareto optimal solutions, the effects of the design parameters on the objective functions were discussed. In addition, multiple regression analysis was performed for quantitative evaluation of the results of the Pareto optimal solutions, and the dominant design parameters for each objective function were identified.

  • Machine learning-based prediction of heat transport performance in oscillating heat pipe

    An oscillating heat pipe (OHP) is a highly efficient cooling system for densely integrated electronic and electric devices operating at high frequencies with high heat generation densities. However, because of the complicated internal flow with phase changes, it is difficult to predict the heat transport performance of OHPs accurately. Such predictions are needed to understand the fundamental phenomena in heat transport and optimize the OHP design parameters. The objective of this study is to predict the three prediction targets comprising the internal flow pattern, wall temperature difference between the cooled and heated sections, and heat transport rate of the OHP through machine learning in recurrent neural networks. Experiments on OHP with ethanol were performed for the heat input range of 62-125 W to obtain time series data of the internal flow pattern images, wall temperatures, and cooling water temperatures. The internal flow pattern images were processed by semantic segmentation and subsequently used for training the models for each prediction target. The internal flow patterns were recursively predicted using the trained model. The predicted internal flow patterns were then input into the wall temperature difference and heat transport rate models to predict these two prediction targets. The predicted and experimental time series data for each prediction target were compared, and the prediction ability of the machine learning-based procedure was demonstrated by the quantitative agreement between the experimental and predicted statistical values.

    The objective of this study is to clarify the effects of the film-cooling flow pulsation and the differences between the Strouhal number ratios of 1.0 and root 2. The surface-averaged film cooling effectiveness for the Strouhal number ratios of 1.0 and root 2 had decreased and increased, respectively, in comparison with the steady cooling flow in the authors' previous large eddy simulations. Subsequently, clarification on the possible reasons for these changes was sought. Measurements of the instantaneous velocity fields over the smooth cutback surface at two different pulsation frequencies were performed using two-dimensional three-component particle tracking velocimetry (2D3C-PTV). Notably, the power spectrum density of the wall-normal velocity fluctuations showed that the strongest peaks appeared at the pulsation frequencies, and the peak value for the Strouhal number ratio of 1.0 was much higher than those for the steady cooling flow and the Strouhal number ratio of root 2. When the absolute Reynolds shear stresses integrated for the mixing-layer region were compared, those for the Strouhal number ratios of 1.0 and root 2 were found to be higher and lower, respectively, than those for the steady cooling flow. Remarkably, the suppression of the turbulent mixing for the Strouhal number ratio root 2 was caused by the suppressed development of the large-scale alternating vortices shed from the lip edge by imposing the cooling-flow pulsation at the frequency nonresonant with the vortex shedding frequency of the steady cooling flow.

    The present study models the flow configuration in a tube downstream of multi-branching in a catalytic converter. Convective heat transfer in a thin circular straight pipe is analyzed by direct numerical simulation (DNS). Forced transverse vibration is applied to the pipe itself to enhance the heat transfer. The main computational domain is sufficiently long to capture the spatial development of the vibration effect with the inflow-outflow boundary condition. The representative Reynolds number is set to be less than that in a driver domain which generates the turbulent inflow of the main domain. Profiles of the Nusselt number exhibit that the positive effect of the vibration on the heat transfer becomes apparent at certain downstream locations. The distance to its location is short with the high vibration frequency keeping the amplitude constant. In the region where the heat transfer is enhanced, the main flow with high temperature is shifted to one side and the other side of the pipe wall in the vibration direction alternatingly with the appearance of the organized streamwise vortices. The flow structure in the present spatially developing configuration is governed mainly by the vibration frequency although the terminal heat transfer performance is approximately a function of the velocity amplitude of the vibration.

    The objective of this study is to determine the differences in flow fields between the 30deg in-line and staggered arrangements of teardrop-shaped dimples, and to explain why the surface-averaged Nusselt number with the 30deg in-line arrangement was 28.7% higher than that with the 30deg staggered arrangement in our previous study. Measurements of the instantaneous velocity fields over the dimpled cutback surfaces in the two arrangements were performed at five spanwise cross sections using two-dimensional three-component particle tracking velocimetry (2D3C-PTV). Recirculation flows were observed only inside the dimples in the in-line arrangement, and the region above the recirculation flows exhibited a higher Reynolds shear stress. In this region, turbulent mixing between the high-speed cooling-flow and the low-speed recirculation-flow can be promoted. Streamlines of the time-averaged velocities showed that approximately half the fluid flowing out of a teardrop-shaped dimple in the in-line arrangement hardly flowed into the ones downstream. The remainder of the fluid mostly flowed into the dimple immediately downstream, and the inflow of the fluid into further downstream dimples decreased gradually. From the PTV results, we can deduce that the fluid motions in the in-line arrangement leads to a larger temperature-difference between the dimple wall and the fluid because the inflow of fluid heated inside upstream dimples into the downstream ones is less than in the staggered arrangement. Consequently, the Nusselt number in the in-line arrangement was higher.

    A series of direct numerical simulations is conducted to investigate the convection in a pipe with transverse vibration aiming at the heat transfer enhancement in a catalytic converter. Assuming that the turbulent inflow enters a thin tube of the honeycomb converter, friction Reynolds number which is defined by the friction velocity and the pipe radius is set to be 60 with the initial condition of the fully developed turbulent field of higher Reynolds number. The parameters of vibration control are amplitude eta* and frequency f*. For a case of (2 eta*, f *) = (1.6, 0.4), the Nusselt number periodically increases and decreases in time to achieve 70% augmentation on average as compared to the uncontrolled case. It can be observed through visualization of the flow field that twin vortices play a dominant role in enhancing the heat transfer. High-temperature fluid is transported by the twin vortices toward the pipe wall in the vibration direction to increase the Nusselt number there. However, after the breakdown of the twin vortices, the high-temperature fluid remains at the center of the pipe and the effect of heat transfer enhancement is suppressed. It is also confirmed from a parametric study that the velocity amplitude of the induced vibration is an important parameter for heat transfer enhancement. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Skin friction drag is much greater in turbulent flows as compared with that in laminar flows. It is well known that traveling wave control can be used to achieve a large drag reduction. In the present study, a direct numerical simulation of a turbulent pipe flow was performed to clarify the mechanism of the drag reduction caused by the traveling wave control. The flow induced by the control was evaluated using pathline analysis. Near the wall, a ”closed flow” was formed, wherein the injected particles return to the wall owing to the suction flow. The random component of Reynolds shear stress was perfectly suppressed in the closed flow, which suggests that there was no turbulence. The controlled flow was categorized into four patterns, and each flow characteristic and drag reduction effect was discussed. When the dosing rate is high, the drag decreases, while when the dosing rate is low, i.e., when the injected particles are released into the main flow, the turbulence is maintained. If the thickness of the layer suppressing turbulence is insufficient, a significant effect in terms of the drag reduction cannot be expected. The large drag reduction owing to the traveling wave control can be attributed to the elimination of turbulence in the region near the wall.

  • Dual-plane stereoscopic PIV measurement of vortical structure in turbulent channel flow on sinusoidal riblet surface

    Vortical structure in wall turbulence over a sinusoidal riblet surface is investigated by means of a dual plane stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (DPS-PIV) measurement. The experiment is made in a channel flow at a friction Reynolds number of 150. The lateral spacing of the adjacent walls of the sinusoidal riblet varies in the streamwise direction and 12% of the drag reduction rate has been confirmed. The DPS-PIV measurement system consists of four high-speed CCD cameras. The laser sheets are provided on streamwise and wall-normal planes and separated 0.5 mm in the spanwise direction to each other. The profiles of the velocity statistics in the flat case show a good agreement with previous data. Since all velocity components can be measured on adjacent laser sheets simultaneously, an instantaneous velocity deformation tensor can be obtained and vortical structures can be identified by a second invariant of the tensor i.e., the Q value. The probability of Q value in the riblet side is almost unchanged from that of the flat side. The analysis of the tracking of vortical structures by using the Q value is performed. As similar to a pathline analysis in a previous study, we confirmed that the riblet surface prevents the vortical structure hitting the wall and vortical structures follow the upward and downward flows induced by the sinusoidal riblet surface.     Direct numerical simulations of thermal turbulent boundary layer flows over a wavy wall surface are performed to investigate the effect of a wavelength on drag coefficients and heat transfer performance. The Reynolds number based on an inlet boundary layer thickness is set to be 2820 and the Prandtl number is set to be Pr = 0.71 and 2.0. The wavy wall surface is homogeneous in the spanwise direction and the wave amplitude is fixed at 2a(+) = 20. The six wavelength cases of lambda/2a = 7.5 similar to 45 are examined. As the wavelength decreases, the skin-friction drag decreases and the pressure drag and heat transfer increase. The total drag peaks at lambda/2a = 12.5 and the flow separation occurs at lambda/2a < 15. In the separation region, the backward flow transfers the heat and results in a negative correlation coefficient between the velocity and temperature of R(u(t)'T') at the bottom of the wavy wall. Spindle-shaped spots of the Nusselt number are also observed on the upslope of the wavy wall.

    The direct numerical simulation of fully developed turbulent channel flow with a sinusoidal riblet surface has been carried out at the friction Reynolds number of 110. Lateral spacing of adjacent walls in a sinusoidal riblet is varied sinusoidally in the streamwise direction. The average lateral spacing of a sinusoidal riblet is larger than the diameter of a quasi-streamwise vortex and its wetted area is smaller than that of ordinary straight-type riblets. We investigate the effect of sinusoidal riblet design parameters on the drag reduction rate and flow statistics in this paper. The parametric study shows that the maximum total drag reduction rate is approximately 9.8% at a friction Reynolds number of 110. The riblet induces downward and upward flows in the expanded and contracted regions, respectively, which contribute to periodic Reynolds shear stress. However, the random Reynolds shear stress decreases drastically as compared with the flat surface case, resulting in the reduction of total drag owing to the sinusoidal riblet. We also performed vortex tracking to discuss the motion of the vortical structure traveling over the sinusoidal riblet surface. Vortex tracking and probability analysis for the core of the vortical structure show that the vortical structure is attenuated owing to the sinusoidal riblet and follows the characteristic flow. These results show that the high skin-friction region on the channel wall is localized at the expanded region of the riblet walls. In consequence, the wetted area of the riblet decreases, resulting in the drag-reduction effect.

    Cooling at trailing edge of gas turbine airfoil is one of the most difficult problems because of its thin shape: high thermal load from both surfaces, hard-to-cool geometry of narrow passages, and at the same time demand for structural strength are the reasons. In this study, heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness on pressure-side cutback surface were measured by a transient infrared thermography technique with consideration of three-dimensional heat conduction. The cutback surface was roughened by teardrop-shaped dimples. Three different rotation angles (30, 45, and 60 deg) of the dimpled surface with in-line and staggered arrangements were examined for blowing ratio of 0.5, 1.0,1.5, and 2.0. Within the present arrangements, the film cooling effectiveness remained almost constant, although the heat transfer coefficient became a maximum at 30 deg in-line arrangement. The overall film cooling performance evaluated by net heat flux reduction was the highest for the 30 deg in-line arrangement and it was 14-24% higher than the 30 deg staggered arrangement. Three-component PTV results explained this effect by the suppression of flow separation in the 30 deg in-line arrangement and it attained the favorable inflow condition on the downstream dimples.   • Numerical simulation of drag-reducing channel flow by using bead-spring chain model

    Numerical simulations of the drag-reducing turbulent channel flow caused by polymer addition are performed. A bead-spring chain model is employed as a model of polymer aggregation. The model consists of beads and springs to represent the polymer dynamics. Three drag-reduction cases are studied with different spring constants that correspond to the relaxation time of the polymer. The energy budget is mainly focused upon to discuss the drag-reduction mechanism. Our results show that a decreasing pressure-strain correlation mainly contributes to strengthening the anisotropy of the turbulence. Furthermore, energy transport by the polymer models attenuates the turbulence. These viscoelastic effects on the drag -reducing flow are intensified with decreasing spring constant. By visualizing the flow field, it is found that this polymer energy transport is related to the orientation of the polymer. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
