Current state of research and teaching activities

  • When a material is processed on a scale smaller than the wavelength of light, its refractive index can be widely modified. Such materials are called metamaterials, which can transform the state of light in various ways and bring out novel functionalities. In our laboratory, we are researching the application of precisely designed metamaterials and metasurfaces to ultra-thin highly functional lenses, three-dimensional imaging technology (holography), and microsensors.   • Linear polarization-separating metalens at long-wavelength infrared

    We designed and fabricated a linear polarization-separation metalens (PSM) made of single-crystal silicon (sc-Si) for long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) imaging. The PSM comprises sc-Si dielectric waveguide pillar meta-atoms with rectangular cross-sections, providing a full 2 & pi; phase delay range for two orthogonal linear polarization components with high transmittances (>70%). Electron beam lithography and deep reactive ion etching were used to fabricate the PSM. Polarization-separation imaging of elevated and ambient temperature objects was demonstrated with high extinction ratios of 21.8 dB and 12.8 dB for the x- and y-polarizations, respectively. Additionally, polarization-sensitive imaging was demonstrated by distinguishing the surfaces of a hand and toy windows. Our work enables the visualization of invisible information in the LWIR region and has widespread applications.& COPY; 2023 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement

    Conventionally, silicon is less often selected as the material of dielectric metasurfaces in the visible band than other lossless materials, including titanium dioxide, silicon nitride, and gallium nitride. The reason is its relatively high extinction coefficient and resulting low transmittance. This studydemonstrated that accuratelydesignednanopillars made of single-crystal silicon could be used satisfactorily on a metasurface, even in the visible band. Four line-focusing metasurface lenses were designed to verify the lens performance effectiveness of silicon nanopillars in the visible band. In addition, a combination of the character projection and the variable-shaped beam modes in the electron beam lithography was operated to evaluate the compatibility betweenmass productivity and accuracy. We successfully obtained a highly efficient line-focusingmetasurface lens composed of single crystalline silicon nanopillars. The parameters of the metasurface lens at a wavelength of 532 nm were as follows: lens thickness, 300 nm; focal length, 3.91 mm; square aperture, 2 mm; numerical aperture, 0.25; measured transmittance, 38.4% to 46.8%; and measured beam spot width, 3.68 mu m (full width at half maximum, FWHM) at the focal point. The results obtained in this study show a promising use of silicon metasurface for optical sensor applications in the visible band.

  • Acetic acid detection in photovoltaic modules during ultraviolet irradiation and damp-heat combined tests

    In this study, we evaluated the acetic acid generation in photovoltaic (PV) modules during an accelerated reliability test that combines ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and damp-heat (DH) using tin film sensors. We employed a tin film to detect acetic acid through the change in optical reflectance due to the chemical reaction from metallic tin to transparent tin tetraacetate. The relative reflectance of the tin film sensors laminated in a PV module was measured and used as an indicator of acetic acid generated during the reliability test. Consequently, we achieved non-destructive detection of a small amount of acetic acid generated during the UV irradiation stage of the UV+DH combined test with high spatial and temporal resolution using tin film sensors.

  • Rotational varifocal moir? metalens made of single-crystal silicon meta-atoms for visible wavelengths

    Metasurface lenses (metalenses) offer an ultrathin and simple optical system with dynamic functions that include focal length tuning. In this study, a rotational varifocal (i.e., moir?) metalens based on octagonal single-crystal silicon pillars was designed and fabricated to realize a high transmittance, whole 2π phase coverage, and polarization insensitivity for visible wavelengths. The moir? metalens consists of a pair of cascaded metasurface-based phase lattices and the focal length can be adjusted from negative to positive by mutual rotation. The fabricated moir? metalens demonstrated a focal length that can be tuned from ?36 mm to ?2 mm and from 2 to 12 mm by mutual rotation from ?90° to 90°, and the experimental measurements agreed well with theoretical values at the design wavelength of 633 nm. Imaging was demonstrated at three distinct wavelengths of 633, 532, and 440 nm.

  • Demonstration of a multicolor metasurface holographic movie based on a cinematographic approach

    This study uses a dielectric metasurface to demonstrates a multicolor holographic movie. Overlapping of multiple-wavelength images at 445 nm, 532 nm, and 633 nm was achieved by maintaining the ratio between the wavelengths and the pixel periods constant. Polarization-independent pillar waveguides made of single-crystal silicon are used as meta-atoms. A movie of the rotating earth was designed by the iterative Fourier transform algorithm and fabricated using electron beam lithography to a silicon-on-sapphire substrate. The multicolor movie consists of 20 frames was successfully reproduced at the maximum speed of 30 frames per second.

    An optical pH sensor that enables the non-destructive measurement of acetic acid and its distribution in a photovoltaic module during damp heat (DH) testing is reported. The sensor was fabricated by impregnating a solution of a pH-sensitive fluorescent dye into a fluororesin membrane filter, which was then dried. While conducting the DH test, fluorescence spectra from 20 pH sensors were periodically recorded and converted into pH values using a predetermined calibration curve. As a result, we succeeded in measuring changes in pH with a DH test time of up to 2000 h, and it was possible to obtain information on the pH distribution in the module. We also confirmed no change in pH in a module with a silicone encapsulant free from acetic acid, and revealed that the sensor that we developed does not respond to moisture and heat, but only to acetic acid.

    In this paper, an optical pressure-sensitive membrane based on plasmon resonance absorption has been designed, fabricated, and demonstrated. The membrane utilizes plasmon resonance on a gold island film embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layers, and the shift of the resonant wavelength was used as an indicator of pressure-induced strain of the membrane. The membrane with total thickness of 100 mu m was prepared with spin-coating of PDMS and vacuum evaporation of gold island film with the nominal thickness of 10 nm. Pressure sensitivity of the fabricated membrane was demonstrated from the measurement of absorbance spectra and the maximum sensitivity of 0.35 nm/kPa was achieved by applying pressure up to 35 kPa. Plasmon resonance mode attributing to the pressure sensitivity has been analyzed through comparison between electromagnetic simulation and membrane stretching test. From the stretching test, red shifts of the resonant wavelength were obtained for both parallel and perpendicular polarizations to the tensile direction with the sensitivities of 0.372 and 0.134 nm/%, respectively. From the electromagnetic simulation, these red shifts can be attributed to both gap-mode and deformation-mode resonances of the gold island film.

    This paper reports an experimental demonstration of moire metalens which shows wide focal length tunability from negative to positive by mutual angle rotation at the wavelength of 900 nm. The moire metalens was developed using high index contrast transmitarray meta-atoms made of amorphous silicon octagonal pillars, which is designed to have polarization insensitivity and full 2 pi phase coverage. The fabricated moire metalens showed focal length tunability at the ranges between +/- 1.73 - +/- 5 mm, which corresponds to the optical power ranges between +/- 578 +/- 200 m(-1) at the mutual rotation between +/- 90 degrees.   • Metasurface holographic movie: a cinematographic approach

    Animation for a metasurface hologram was achieved using a cinematographic approach. Time-lapsed images were reconstructed using sequentially arranged metasurface hologram frames. An Au rectangular nanoaperture was adopted as a meta-atom pixel and arrayed to reproduce the phase distribution based on the help of a Pancharatnam-Berry phase. We arrayed 48 hologram frames on a 2-cm(2) substrate and measured and assessed the retardation of fabricated meta-atoms to reconstruct the holographic image, successfully demonstrating the movie with a frame rate of 30 frames per second.     This paper reports on a design, fabrication and demonstration of a reconfigurable metasurface which consists of gold nanograting integrated with a thermal bimorph actuator. An Au/SiO 2 bimorph beam was chosen as both an optical meta-atom and thermal actuator. As the grating consists of alternately arranged movable and static beams, the effective thickness of the grating was decreased by actuation, resulting decrease of optical retardation. The device was fabricated through surface micromachining on a glass substrate. The device was characterized using a rotating analyzer method. Retardation reconfiguration from 86.2° to 78.6° at the wavelength of 532 nm was achieved.

    A birefringent reconfigurable metasurface at visible wavelengths was obtained by combining an Au nanograting metasurface, which shows very high birefringence characteristics in visible light, and a microelectromechanical system actuator. The system was based on the electrostatic out-of-plane motion of the nanograting and it was developed by microfabrication. The modulation of retardation was achieved at a wavelength of 633 nm by up to 25.3 degrees (from 21.5 degrees to 46.8 degrees) by applying a voltage in the range of 0-200V. VC 2018 Author(s).     A novel, nondestructive low-cost detection method for acetic acid distribution in a photovoltaic (PV) module during the damp heat (DH) test based on reflectance changes of tin film sensors is proposed and demonstrated. The sensor consists of a tin film evaporated on a glass substrate. Nineteen sensors and one gold film are laminated in the PV module, and the DH test was performed at 85 degrees C and 85% relative humidity for 7203 h. The time range of measurement can be controlled between 2000 to 6000 h by adjusting the tin film initial thickness from 70 to 160 nm. (c) 2018 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

  • Evaluation of mitochondrial activity by two-photon absorption with near-field multioptical fiber probes

    pH measurements enable the direct monitoring and evaluation of mitochondrial activity. We constructed a scanning near-field optical microscopy system with multioptical fiber probes using the two-photon absorption of a pH-sensitive fluorescent dye, SNARF-4F, to measure the activity difference of mitochondrial aggregates. pH can be monitored through the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of SNARF-4F. We derived a calibration curve of the FIR as a function of pH. The FIR dynamic responses were measured by adding hydrochloric acid to the buffer solution. Using the developed system, we simultaneously measured the pH changes at two different locations in the SNARF-4F solution. Mitochondrial samples were prepared using optical tweezers to control the number and position of mitochondria. Mitochondrial pH changes (Delta pH) between 0.05 and 0.57 were observed after adding a nutritional supplement (malate and glutamate). In addition, in the comparative experiment on the activities of two mitochondrial populations, the obtained result suggested that the activity differs depending on the difference in the number of mitochondria.     A process for the simultaneous fabrication of microcavity structures on both sides of a film was proposed and demonstrated to develop a freestanding-type integrated absorber-emitter for use in solar thermophotovoltaic power generation systems. The absorber-emitter-integrated film comprised a heat-resistant Ni-W alloy deposited by electroplating. A two-step silicon mould was fabricated using deep reactive-ion etching and electron beam lithography. Cavity arrays with different unit sizes were successfully fabricated on both sides of the film; these arrays are suitable for use as a solar spectrum absorber and an infrared-selective emitter. Their emissivity spectra were characterised through UV-vis-NIR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. (C) 2017 The Japan Society of Applied Physics
