  • Water Vapor Adsorption Behavior of Thermosensitive Polymers for Desiccant Humidity Control Systems

    Desiccant humidity control systems have been garnering considerable attention in the attempt to achieve highly efficient utilization of low-temperature heat exhausted from various industries at temperatures less than 373 K. We have focused on thermosensitive polymers as new desiccants because a large amount of dehumidified water would be expected in the system because of their thermosensitivity. Our previous study focused on the water adsorption behavior of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (poly(NIPA)), which has a low critical solution temperature (LCST) of 306 K. In this study, poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) (poly(NIPMA)) and poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (poly(DMAEMA)) cross-linked with N,N'- methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) were investigated. These polymers are known to exhibit thermosensitivity in the temperature range of 313-319 K in water, which is a higher LCST than that of poly(NIPA). Poly(NIPMA) adsorbed water vapor linearly with increasing relative humidity. It was also observed that poly(NIPMA) prepared at MBAA concentrations of 200 mol/m(3) exhibited a thermosensitivity in the temperature range of 303-313 K in water vapor adsorption. Meanwhile, poly(DMAEMA) adsorbed little water vapor up to a relative humidity (RH) of 40%; however, it exponentially adsorbed water at RH levels higher than 40%. From the estimation results of effective water adsorptivity, we found that poly(DMAEMA) is applicable in desiccant humidity control systems when the dehumidification process is performed at high RH.

  • Temperature-swing adsorption of 4-isopropylphenol and bisphenol A onto a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/silica gel composite

    Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (poly(NIPA)) is a thermosensitive polymer, with a lower critical solution temper-ature (LCST) of-33 degrees C in water. Herein, a poly(NIPA)/silica gel composite was developed as an adsorbent for the temperature-swing adsorption (TSA) of organic pollutants in aqueous media. Poly(NIPA) was grafted onto a millimeter-sized silica gel by silane coupling, followed by free radical polymerization. The composite reversibly adsorbed/desorbed organic pollutants such as bisphenol A and 4-isopropylphenol by changing the temperature across the LCST range to modulate the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of poly(NIPA). The adsorption isotherms and kinetics were evaluated through a batch experiment. A continuous TSA process using a fixed-bed column with adsorption at 40 degrees C followed by desorption at 20 degrees C was demonstrated. The associated breakthrough curve was predicted by a mathematical analysis involving the Henry constant and effective diffusivity. The composite overcomes drawbacks such as a low mechanical strength and thermosensitive volume change of conventional poly(NIPA) gels. Thus, this study provides a strategy for preparing an environmentally friendly adsorbent and designing an adsorption process for wastewater treatment and conservation of water environments.

  • Hydrogel adsorbents for the removal of hazardous pollutants?requirements and available functions as adsorbent

    Over the last few decades, various adsorption functions of polymer hydrogels for the removal of hazardous pollutants have been developed. The performance of hydrogel adsorbents depends on the constituents of the gels and the functions produced by the polymer networks of the gels. Research on hydrogels utilizing the characteristic functions of polymer networks has increased over the last decade. The functions of polymer networks are key to the development of advanced adsorbents for the removal of various pollutants. No review has discussed hydrogel adsorbents from the perspective of the roles and functions of polymer networks in hydrogels. This paper briefly reviews the basic requirements of adsorbents and the general characteristics of hydrogels as adsorbents. Thereafter, hydrogels are reviewed on the basis of the roles and functions of the polymer networks in them for the removal of hazardous pollutants by introducing studies published over the last decade. The application of hydrogels as adsorbents for the removal of hazardous pollutants is discussed as well.

  • TiO2 nanoparticle-loaded poly(NIPA-co-NMA) fiber web for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of 4-isopropylphenol

    A TiO2 nanoparticle-loaded polymer fiber web was developed as a functional material with the ability to adsorb and photo-catalytically degrade organic pollutants in aquatic media. A linear copolymer of N-isopropylacrylamide (primary component) and N-methylol acrylamide (poly(NIPA-co-NMA)) was prepared, and composite fibers were fabricated by electrospinning a methanol suspension containing the copolymer and commercially available TiO2 nanoparticles. The crosslinking of the polymer via the formation of methylene bridges between NMA units was accomplished by heating, and the fiber morphology was analyzed by electron microscopy. 4-Isopropylphenol generated by the degradation of bisphenol A-one of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals-was used as the model organic pollutant. As poly(NIPA) is a thermosensitive polymer that undergoes hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition in water, the temperature-dependence of the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of 4-isopropylphenol was investigated. The degradation rate was analyzed using a pseudo-first-order kinetic model to obtain the apparent reaction rate constant, k(app). The enhancement of the photocatalytic degradation rate owing to the adsorption of 4-isopropylphenol onto thermosensitive poly(NIPA)-based fibers is discussed in terms of the ratio of the k(app) of the composite fiber to that of unsupported TiO2 nanoparticles. Based on the results, an eco-friendly wastewater treatment process involving periodically alternated adsorption and photocatalytic degradation is proposed.

  • Surface and stability analysis of immobilized laccase on poly(ethylene terephthalate) grafted maleic anhydride nanofiber mat

    BACKGROUND A poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) based carrier was used for enzyme immobilization due to its good physical and mechanical properties. However, its high hydrophobicity and chemically inactive properties hindered its capability as an enzyme carrier. This study developed a PET-based carrier by grafting PET with maleic anhydride (MAH) before electrospinning. This carrier was used to immobilize laccase and characterized based on its stability after immobilization. RESULTS The highest laccase activity recovery for laccase immobilized on PET-g-MAH nanofiber mat was 59.17% using covalent bonding, followed by the crosslinking method. The static water contact angle of PET-g-MAH nanofiber mats was reduced from 129 +/- 8(o) to 109 +/- 12(o). Based on the Wenzel model, the reduction was due to the decrease in surface roughness of the hydrophobic surface. Besides, the immobilized laccase also withstood high temperature up to 60 degrees C and retained about 29.22% +/- 5.06% of its initial activity after 30 days of storage and repeated use. CONCLUSION Laccase immobilization on PET-g-MAH nanofiber has good stability (thermal, storage and reusability) and is recommended to be implemented in the industries.     Ethanol fermentation with a hybrid system containing free and immobilized yeast cells on a macroporous monolithic hydrogel scaffold was investigated. Cell immobilization was achieved using N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and methoxy triethyleneglycol acrylate (MTGA) hydrogels having macroporous monolithic structures containing interconnected micrometer-sized macropores. The immobilized cells grow within the hydrogel and can exit through the macropores into the fermentation medium, and thus a hybrid bioreactor consisting of free and immobilized yeast cells is constructed. The transformation of D-glucose to ethanol using Saccharomyces cerevisiae in batch and continuous fermentation processes was examined. Ethanol was successfully fermented using the macroporous hydrogels, whereas the conventional nonporous NIPA hydrogel does not effectively act as a cell scaffold. In continuous fermentation, the hybrid system containing both free yeast cells and those immobilized in the macroporous MTGA hydrogel showed higher ethanol productivity than the control system containing only free cells. Crucially, the macroporous hydrogel allowed the stable growth of immobilized yeast cells, resulting in a high cell density in the reactor. The hybrid system under steady-state fermentation had free and immobilized cell densities of 1.72 kg-free-cell/m(3) and 29 kg-immobilized-cell/m(3)-gel, respectively, and the ethanol productivities 0.421 kg-ethanol/(kg-free-cell.h) and 0.128 kg-ethanol/(kg-immobilized-cell.h), respectively.

  • Effect of Structural Features of Polymer Gels Containing Au Nanoparticles on Their Catalytic Properties

    Au(0) nanoparticles catalyze many reactions and various Au-polymer composites have been developed to date. Herein, we developed different types of Au(0)-nanoparticle-loaded gels and investigated the effects of their structural features such as the polymer type, gel diameter, and gel composition on their catalytic properties. N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) gel, N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) gel, poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) gel, and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMEA) gel were used, and millimeter-, micrometer-, and nanometer-sized gels were fabricated. Au(0)-nanoparticle-loaded gels were obtained by adsorbing Au(III) ions onto the gels, followed by the reduction of the adsorbed ions. All the Au(0)-nanoparticle-loaded gels successfully functioned as catalysts for the reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol with NaBH4. The catalytic performance of the gels was evaluated using the pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant and apparent activation energy. The polymer type and the DMAA gel composition had little effect on the apparent reaction rate constant. The kinetic rate-determining steps in the Au(0)-nanoparticle-loaded gels with various diameters were identified using the Weisz-Prater modulus and the effectiveness factor, and the concentration profile of the reactant in the gels were estimated.

  • Effect of polymer matrices of gels bearing a sulfo group on their catalytic properties for acetalization of glycerol to solketal and esterification of oleic acid to ethyl oleate

    A novel type of copolymer gel bearing the sulfo group was developed as a heterogeneous acid catalyst for the solvent free acetalization of glycerol with acetone to form a desirable solketal, as well as the solvent free esterification of oleic acid with ethanol to form ethyl oleate as a biodiesel fuel. The copolymer gels were synthesized by the copolymerization of a primary monomer (ethoxy diethyleneglycol acrylate (EDGA), N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA), etc.) with 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS). The copolymer gels, such as EDGA-co-AMPS gel and NIPA-co-AMPS gel, successfully catalyzed both reactions with a higher reaction rate than those of AMPS gel and the conventional sulfonic ion exchange resin (Amberlyst). According to Le Chatelier's principle, if a gel catalyst absorbs reactants well, and expels or poorly absorbs products, the apparent rate of the reaction occurring within the gel is enhanced. This hypothesis was examined by analyzing the solution absorptions of these gels and their reaction rates, including Eley-Rideal kinetic analysis.

    This study investigates the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior of a novel thermosensitive NIPA-co-MTGA polymer comprising N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and methoxy triethyleneglycol acrylate (MTGA) by inducing hydrophilic/hydrophobic transitions in an aqueous salt solution. The LCST of the NIPA-co-MTGA polymer was in between that of the NIPA and MTGA homopolymers, and depended on the polymer composition. The LCST of all the polymers decreased with increasing salt concentration. The extent of decrease depended on the type of salt, with the order qualitatively corresponding to the Hofmeister series of anions. The LCSTs of the polymers in aqueous salt solutions were modeled and successfully predicted using support vector regression (SVR), a machine learning methodology. This is the first study to predict the LCST of thermosensitive polymers in aqueous salt solutions using SVR. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Oxygen diffusivity and reaction rate in spherical gel entrapping ammonia-oxidizing bacteria

    Nitrifying biomass immobilized in a gel has been applied in wastewater treatment, as immobilization results in a high bacterial cell density in the reactor and facilitates easy solid-liquid separation in the settling tank. Herein, the diffusivity, reaction rate, and concentration profile of oxygen in a spherical gel entrapping ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were investigated. Calcium alginate gel and 2,2-bis [4-(methacryloxy polyethoxy) phenyl] propane (BPE) gel were used as models to prepare millimeter-sized spherical gels. A novel method involving controlled oxygen transfer into/out of the spherical gel with alternative flow of air and N-2 gas, measurement of oxygen concentration at the center of the spherical gel using an oxygen microsensor, and analysis using the Fickian diffusion equation was developed to determine oxygen diffusivity in the gel. Ammonia oxidation in the AOB-entrapping gel was also monitored by measuring the oxygen concentration at the center of the gel using an oxygen microsensor. The oxygen concentration profile in the gel was estimated based on the oxygen diffusivity and Michaelis-Menten model parameters determined for suspended AOB cells. The kinetic rate-determining step in the AOB-entrapping gel was identified using the effectiveness factor. The results would be useful for the development of aerobic bacteria-entrapping gels and the design of wastewater treatment processes using these gels.

  • Preparation of Pd-loaded gels bearing a thiol group and their catalytic activities in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction

    A novel type of Pd-loaded thiol-type gel bearing the thiol group was developed as a heterogeneous Pd catalyst for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The thiol-type gels were synthesized by the copolymerization of a primary monomer (ethoxy diethyleneglycol acrylate, N-isopropylacrylamide, or N,N-dimethylacrylamide) with allyl mercaptan. Amine-type gels were also synthesized for comparison. Pd(II) ion-adsorbed gels were fabricated via the Pd(II) ion adsorption process, and subsequently, Pd(0)-nanoparticle-loaded gels were fabricated via reduction. Both gels successfully worked as a precatalyst or a catalyst for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction between iodobenzene and phenylboronic acid in ethanol with K2CO3 at 60 degrees C. The Pd(0) nanoparticleloaded thiol-type gels exhibited high reusability, while the amine-type gels presented lower catalytic activities upon reuse due to the aggregation of Pd(0) nanoparticles. The thiol-type gel was found to immobilize dispersed Pd(0) nanoparticles owing to the strong affinity of Pd to the thiol group, which can be understood in terms of the theory of hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB). Finally, the Pd(0)-nanoparticle-loaded thiol-type gels exhibited catalytic properties even in water and water-ethanol mixtures; the highest catalytic activity was obtained in 50 vol% ethanol.

  • Water vapor adsorption on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel cross-linked with N, N '-methylenebisacrylamide

    Water vapor adsorption characteristics and the thermosensitivity for vapor adsorption of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel (NIPA gel) cross-linked with N, N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) (cross-linked NIPA gel) were investigated for application in desiccant humidity control systems. The cross-linked NIPA gels were prepared via copolymerization of NIPA monomers and MBAA monomers, which were used as crosslinkers, at various reagent concentrations and polymerization temperatures in the range of 283-323 K. The water vapor adsorption isotherms of NIPA homopolymer, MBAA homopolymer, and cross-linked NIPA gels were obtained at adsorption temperatures in the range of 298-323 K using a volumetric gas adsorption apparatus. The water vapor adsorptivity of the cross-linked NIPA gel increased with increasing MBAA monomer concentration and decreasing NIPA monomer concentration. NIPA homopolymer under dry conditions showed weak thermosensitivity for water vapor adsorption between 298 and 313 K. Meanwhile, MBAA homopolymer showed almost no change in water vapor adsorptivity above adsorption temperatures of 298 K. The cross-linked NIPA gels had a similar thermosensitivity to NIPA homopolymer, but its sensitivity might be shifted to higher temperature than NIPA homopolymer. Thermosensitivity of the cross-linked NIPA gel was effective in improving polymer water adsorptivity, necessary for desiccant humidity control systems; however, the adsorption performance of the polymer gel systems investigated require further improvements before practical application will be possible.

  • Diffusion coefficient of solute in heterogeneous and macroporous hydrogels and its correlation with the effective crosslinking density

    The diffusion coefficient, D-g, of a solute in hydrogels is a key parameter in their applications. D-g has been correlated with the volume fraction, phi(p), of polymer in gel. In this study, the effective crosslinking density,nu(e), was determined from the rubber network theory using compression tests, and was applied as a model parameter for the characterization of the polymer networks and gel structures. It was subsequently examined to estimate D-g for various types of gels, including heterogeneous and macroporous gels. The D-g values of NaCl and trisodium citrate were determined with a permeability test using the gel membrane. The diffusion of the solute in all the tested gels was accurately represented by both conventional (D-g/D-0 = exp(-k phi(n)(p))) and novel (D-g/D-0 = exp(-a nu(e)b)) models.

  • Development of zirconia nanoparticle-loaded hydrogel for arsenic adsorption and sensing

    A novel zirconia nanoparticle-loaded synthetic polymeric hydrogel was developed as an adsorbent and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor for arsenic in an aqueous solution. The bulk composite hydrogel was prepared by polymerizing a pre-gel aqueous solution containing N,N-dimethylacrylamide as the primary monomer, a crosslinking monomer, an initiator, and commercially available zirconia nanoparticles. The hydrogel-coated QCM sensor was simply fabricated by polymerizing the pre-gel aqueous solution onto the surface of a gold electrode on a quartz crystal. The hydrogel selectively adsorbed As(III) and As(V), and the adsorption equilibrium followed the Langmuir-type isotherm. The amount of arsenic adsorbed was higher in acidic and neutral solutions and decreased with an increase in pH. Moreover, the hydrogel adsorbed/desorbed arsenic repeatedly via the regeneration process using a NaOH aqueous solution. Furthermore, the investigation of the oscillation behavior of the hydrogel-coated QCM sensor revealed that the resonance frequency shift increases with an increase in arsenic concentration, which indicates that the adsorption of arsenic onto the sensor follows a Langmuir-type isotherm. The hydrogel-coated QCM sensor could detect arsenic with high selectivity and sensitivity even in the presence of Na(I), Mg(II), and Ca(II) ions. Thus, we successfully developed the worlds first QCM sensor for arsenic.

    The directional and controllable transportation of self-propelled chemical objects in response to chemical signals in environmental media holds considerable promise for diverse applications. We investigated the chemotaxis of oil droplets loaded with surfactants to detect spatial gradients of lanthanide-(III) ions, among which Dy3+ and Tm3+ were the most effective chemoattractants for steering droplets toward the targets. Patterns within a chemotactic index of the lanthanide series exhibited a convex tetrad effect and a breakpoint at Gd3+. The Jorgensen-Kawabe equation, which is based on the refined spin-pairing energy theory, quantitatively demonstrated the tetrad effect. The self-propelled droplets served as a motion-based detection mechanism for lanthanides(III).

  • Immobilization of Azospira sp strain I13 by gel entrapment for mitigation of N2O from biological wastewater treatment plants: Biokinetic characterization and modeling

    Development of a strategy to mitigate nitrous oxide (N2O) emitted from biological sources is important in the nexus of wastewater treatment and greenhouse gas emission. To this end, immobilization of N2O-reducing bacteria as a biofilm has the potential to ameliorate oxygen (O-2) inhibition of the metabolic activity of the bacteria. We demonstrated the effectiveness of calcium alginate gel entrapment of the nosZ Glade II type N2O-reducing bacterium, Azospira sp. strain I13, in reducing levels of N2O, irrespective of the presence of O-2 . Azospira sp. strain I13 cells in the gel exhibited N2O reduction up to a maximum dissolved oxygen concentration of 100 mu M in the bulk liquid. The maximum apparent N2O uptake rate,& nbsp; V'(m,N2O), by gel immobilization did not appreciably decrease, retaining 72% of the N2O reduction rate of the cell suspension of Azospira sp. strain I13. Whereas gel immobilization increased the apparent half-saturation constant for N2O, K'(m,N2O ), and the apparent O-2 inhibition constant, K'(1,O2) , representing the degree of O-2 resistance, correspondingly increased. A mechanistic model introducing diffusion and the reactions of N2O consumption was used to describe the experimental observations.     Novel composite gel beads that entrap ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were developed for wastewater treatment. The AOB-entrapping composite gel beads, which were monodispersed and millimeter-sized, were produced by a method that combined suspension-gelation with sedimentation polymerization. This method involves the preparation of calcium alginate microcapsules, which contain AOB, by electrostatic atomization and free radical polymerization of droplets of a pre-gel aqueous suspension containing microcapsules during their descent into silicone oil. AOB-entrapping non-porous gel beads, without the microcapsules, were also prepared as a control. The AOB entrapped in both the composite and non-porous gels were grown in a continuous stirred tank reactor fed with synthetic inorganic nitrogenous wastewater. The AOB-entrapping gels successfully catalyzed ammonia oxidation. The kinetics of the reaction were analyzed using the Haldane model with inhibition by a substrate.

  • Transesterification of triolein with ethanol using lipase-entrapped NIPA-co-PEGMEA gel beads

    Monodisperse, millimeter-sized, lipase-entrapped NIPA-co-PEGMEA (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate) gel beads were prepared by sedimentation polymerization. The feasibility of the lipase-entrapped gel for use in biodiesel fuel (BDF) production was evaluated by studying its catalytic performance in transesterification of triolein with ethanol as the model. The reaction rate was expressed by the pingpong bi-bi mechanism with ethanol inhibition; the parameters for the immobilized lipase were as follows; the maximum reaction rate, V-max, was 0.405 mol/(min kg - Lipase PS); the Michaelis constants for triolein and ethanol, K-m,K-T and K-m,K-EtOH, were 481 and 1770 mol/m(3), respectively; the ethanol inhibition constant, K-i, was 394 mol/m(3). The NIPA-co-PEGMEA gel support improved the stability of the immobilized lipase. We developed a water-washing process wherein the by-product glycerol, which is absorbed and accumulated in the NIPA-co-PEGMEA gel, is removed, so that the lipase-entrapped gel could be reused for multiple cycles (10 cycles were confirmed). The glycerol absorbability of the NIPA-co-PEGMEA gel makes it promising for use in facile BDF production, as it allows for the simultaneous enzymatic reaction and glycerol removal.

    A novel type of emulsion gel adsorbent consisting of a polymeric hydrogel containing randomly distributed oil microdroplets of an extractant was developed for metal separation. A copolymer hydrogel composed of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA; cross-linking monomer) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), i.e., a PEGDA-co-PEG hydrogel, was developed; the hydrogel with PEGDA = 500 mol/m(3) and PEG = 50 kg/m(3) possessed improved flexibility and strength. The emulsion gel containing an amine extractant, tri-n-octylamine, successfully adsorbed Zn(II) ions. The metal-extractant complexation process and its pH dependence in the emulsion gel were comparable to those of the solvent extraction method. Investigation of the metal adsorption kinetics revealed that diffusion of the solute in the hydrogel phase is fast, and diffusion (accumulation) in the organic extractant phase is the rate-determining step.

  • Rheological flow models of banana peel pectin jellies as affected by sugar concentration

    In the present study, peel pectin jellies (PPJ) were isolated from banana peel Musa acuminata Colla (AAA, cv Berangan') varieties using water bath extraction; five jellies were produced, namely, PPJ_68%, PPJ_70%, PPJ_71%, PPJ_72%, and PPJ_76%. The effect of sugar content on the rheology of the PPJ and commercial fruit jelly was conducted at 25 degrees C within 0.05-100s(-1) shear rate. Flow behaviour was evaluated on the test dispersions while frequency sweeps (E-a) to obtain the viscoelastic (G' and G) were performed on the jellies. PPJ dispersion showed shear thinning flow behaviour, a good fit to the Casson model. Sugar concentration does not affect Casson parameters (K-c, K-oc, ?(ca,) and sigma(oc)). Frequency sweep decreased as viscosity increased which revealed high dependence for both G' and G. Tan for PPJ was more than unity which showed that jelly has less elastic properties. PPJ with the lowest sugar concentration, PPJ_68%, conducted at a high shear rate showed it was compatible with validation of the Cox-Merz rule.

    Lipase-entrapped NIPA-co-PEGMEA gels composed of amphiphilic N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMEA) were previously developed as a means to improve enzymatic activity and stability in organic media. This study focuses on a continuous process for the esterification of oleic acid and ethanol catalyzed by gel beads using the fixed bed method. Monodisperse millimeter-sized gel beads were prepared using a production method combining sedimentation polymerization and two-fluid atomization. The reaction rate was expressed using the ping-pong bi-bi mechanism. A continuous reaction process was successfully demonstrated. The observed values of the conversion of ethanol in the effluent were smaller than the values estimated by a mathematical analysis. This can be attributed to the accumulation of by-product water in gels.

    A new type of thermosensitive adsorbent gel, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-allyl mercaptan) gel (NIPA-co-AM gel), was developed to improve metal separation. The thiol group of the gel selectively adsorbs precious metal ions, especially Pd(II) ions, in aqueous HCI solution in accordance with the hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) theory. The gel adsorbed and desorbed Pd(II) ions with a change in temperature, that is, temperature-swing adsorption (TSA) was accomplished. The effects of temperature, gel composition, and HCI concentration, and the adsorption isotherms and kinetics for Pd(II) ion adsorption were investigated. The adsorption capacity of the gel with NIPA:AM = 950:50 mol/m(3) was 0.191 mol-Pd/kg-dry gel in 1 kmol/m(3) HCI aqueous solution at 20 degrees C. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    We developed previously an emulsion gel adsorbent for improved metal adsorption. This study focuses on a continuous adsorption-desorption process of metal ions from a solution onto emulsion gel beads using the fixed-bed method. The monodisperse millimeter-sized emulsion gel beads, a polymeric hydrogel containing randomly distributed oil microdroplets of di-n-hexylsulfide as an extractant, were prepared using an automatic production method combining sedimentation polymerization and two-fluid atomization. The isotherms and the kinetics for Pd(II) adsorption were investigated. A continuous adsorption-desorption process was successfully demonstrated, and the breakthrough curve was successfully predicted by a mathematical analysis.
