    GLOBAL ECOLOGY AND CONSERVATION
    ELSEVIER
Anthropogenic corridors facilitate alien invasions from low to high elevations in mountains. While native plant assemblages generally show a large elevational turnover to alpine species, alien plant assemblages at high elevations seem to consist of only generalist species with broad tolerances, resulting in a nested structure of lowlands. These may cause homogeneous alien plant assemblages even in geographically isolated higher elevations, thereby undermining the alpine flora uniqueness. We focused on ropeway corridors that may facilitate alien invasions up long elevational gradients from lowlands, and examined the followings on 14 mountains across Japan: Are alien plant assemblages at high elevations accessible by ropeways formed as a subset of lowland alien species? and Are alien plant assemblages homogeneous among isolated higher elevations? We analyzed species richness and spatial turnover of alien and native species at the lower and upper ends of ropeways, as well as the effects of geographical and climatic factors on the spatial turnover and alien species' presence probability at upper ends. Alien species richness decreased with elevation, whereas native species richness did not. The degree of spatial turnover of alien species was lower than that of native species, especially at upper ends, and was not affected by coordinal distance, unlike native species. The alien species' presence probability at the upper ends was influenced by that at the lower ends. Our results highlight that homogeneous alien plant assemblages are formed across isolated higher elevations with ropeways. Strengthening the management of lowland alien species pools is necessary to conserve mountain biodiversity.

AimEnvironmental change affects metacommunity structure both directly-via abiotic factors and dispersal that affect species occurrence-and indirectly-via complex interactions among co-occurring species. We examined how the three main metacommunity factors-environmental conditions, spatial processes and species associations-affect metacommunity structure and whether responses are predictable in real-world systems by using novel methods to disentangle the drivers.LocationEastern Asia, northern Europe and central North America.Time periodContemporary.Major taxa studiedFreshwater fish.MethodsWe used a dataset of freshwater fish species occurrences in temperate lakes in three countries in different biogeographic regions. We analysed co-occurrence patterns by using a joint species distribution model.ResultsWe demonstrated that environmental processes are the main drivers of species' distribution and diversity, suggesting that future climate change (anthropogenic alteration of abiotic factors) will heavily influence the structure of metacommunities. We also showed that spatial processes and species interactions mediated the influence of environmental processes, especially at the lake level.Main conclusionsOur results indicate that ongoing changes in metacommunity structure are modulated not only by the direct impacts of shifting abiotic factors but also by indirect effects of species interactions. Our global analysis indicates that even under the current high rate of environmental change, an identifiable set of underlying processes can be used to predict impacts of this change on metacommunity structure.

Conservation biologists have a daunting task of understanding the causes of species decline associated with anthropogenic factors and predicting the extinction risk of a growing number of endangered species. By reducing variances of estimates with information on closely related species, phylogenetic information among species can bridge gaps in information on species with small range sizes when modelling large numbers of endangered species. However, modelling many species with the Gaussian process (GP), which underlies the evolutionary process of phylogenetic random effects, remains a challenge owing to the computational burden in estimating the large variance-covariance matrix. Here, we applied a phylogenetic generalised mixed model with random slopes and random intercepts to 1010 endangered vascular plant taxa in Japan following phylogenetic GPs implemented by nearest neighbour GP (NNGP) approximation. NNGP enables flexibility in changing the proximity on the phylogenetic tree of species from which information is borrowed to reduce the variances of estimates with a realistic computational burden. We evaluated the effectiveness of phylogenetic models by comparing the predictive performance and descriptive power of phylogenetic and non-phylogenetic models and identified the anthropogenic factors contributing to the decline of each of the studied endangered species. We found that the model with phylogenetic information had better prediction performance than the model without phylogenetic information. The results showed that across all explanatory variables, the phylogenetic model could detect interspecific differences in response to environmental factors in a number of species more clearly. Combined with the phylogenetic signal results, we could also detect a phylogenetic bias in the species that could benefit from the positive effects of protected areas but reduce the local extinctions of 95% of all studied taxa. In conclusion, our model, considering phylogenetic information with NNGP, allows the elucidation of factors causing the decline of many endangered species. In future analyses, the estimation of extinction probability linked to environmental change might be applied to future climate-land use scenarios, advancing the comprehensive assessment of biodiversity degradation and threats to species at multiple scales.

To reduce biodiversity loss, human behavioral change is crucial. However, there has been a significant paucity of effective conservation behavioral interventions, which help establish evidence-based policymaking and lead to the understanding of intervention effectiveness mediators. This study focused on preventing the unintentional introduction of non-native species by examining the effectiveness of four behavioral interventions using an experiment and a questionnaire. The interventions sought to induce footwear cleaning, which reduces non-native species introduction via footwear, at a cleaning station. Responses were considerably heterogeneous across interventions-that is, nudging visitors toward the cleaning station using foot-stamps placed on the ground had the largest impact, while providing procedural knowledge also had a significant effect. Further, the impact of these two interventions differed greatly depending on the degree of individuals' knowledge and/or personalized involvement in the unintentional introduction process. To maximize the impact of and improve interventions, we suggest accounting for the personal factors of the targeted individuals.

Consulting the best available evidence is key to successful conservation decision-making. While much scientific evidence on conservation continues to be published in non-English languages, a poor understanding of how non-English-language science contributes to conservation decision-making is causing global assessments and studies to practically ignore non-English-language literature. By investigating the use of scientific literature in biodiversity assessment reports across 37 countries/territories, we have uncovered the established role of non-English-language literature as a major source of information locally. On average, non-English-language literature constituted 65% of the references cited, and these were recognized as relevant knowledge sources by 75% of report authors. This means that by ignoring non-English-language science, international assessments may overlook important information on local and/or regional biodiversity. Furthermore, a quarter of the authors acknowledged the struggles of understanding English-language literature. This points to the need to aid the use of English-language literature in domestic decision-making, for example, by providing non-English-language abstracts or improving and/or implementing machine translation. (This abstract is also avaialble in 21 other languages in Supplementary Data 4).

Aim Natural disaster risk reduction (DRR) is becoming a more important function of protected area (PAs) for current and future global warming. However, biodiversity conservation and DRR have been handled separately and their interrelationship has not been explicitly addressed. This is mainly because, due of prevailing strategies and criteria for PA placement, a large proportion of PAs are currently located far from human-occupied areas, and habitats in human-occupied areas have been largely ignored as potential sites for conservation despite their high biodiversity. If intensely developed lowland areas with high flooding risk overlap with important sites for biodiversity conservation, it would be reasonable to try to harmonize biodiversity conservation and human development in human-inhabited lowland areas. Here, we examined whether extant PAs can conserve macroinvertebrate and freshwater fish biodiversity and whether human-inhabited lowland flood risk management sites might be suitable to designate as freshwater protected areas (FPAs). Location Across Japan. Methods We examined whether extant PAs can conserve macroinvertebrate and freshwater fish biodiversity and analysed the relationship between candidate sites for new FPAs and flood disaster risk and land use intensity at a national scale across Japan based on distribution data for 131 freshwater fish species and 1395 macroinvertebrate species. Results We found that extant PAs overlapped with approximately 30% of conservation-priority grid cells (1 km(2)) for both taxa. Particularly for red-listed species, only one species of freshwater fish and three species of macroinvertebrate achieved the representation target within extant PAs. Moreover, more than 40% of candidate conservation-priority grid cells were located in flood risk and human-occupied areas for both taxa. Main conclusions Floodplain conservation provides suitable habitat for many freshwater organisms and helps control floodwaters, so establishing new FPAs in areas with high flood risk could be a win-win strategy for conserving freshwater biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem-based DRR (eco-DRR).

  • How well does online information-seeking behavior indicate public conservation orientation? Taxonomy and personal characteristics matter

    ELSEVIER GMBH
Public conservation support for a species can powerfully influence the success of conservation policies and actions. To maximize the effectiveness of the limited resources available for conservation, it would be beneficial to develop a way to predict the degree of public conservation orientation. Here, we explore the utility of the frequency of accessing web content featuring particular species, a direct measure of information-seeking behavior, to predict public conservation orientation. Specifically, we tested whether pageviews of Wikipedia content featuring 100 threatened species in five taxonomic groups (mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, insects, and plants) is associated with public conservation orientation toward these species in Japan. Wikipedia pageviews predicted public conservation orientation for species conservation for the two most salient taxonomic groups (mammals and birds). This relationship, however, was not evident for the other three taxa. The relationship between Wikipedia pageviews and conservation orientation was influenced by respondent age and gender. We employed the national red list category of the species as a covariate, but it was not associated with public orientation for species conservation in any of the five taxonomic groups. Overall, information-seeking behavior could be used as a proxy for public conservation orientation for mammals and birds, but should be interpreted with caution.

    SCIENTIFIC REPORTS
    NATURE PORTFOLIO
Biological atlas data can be used as inputs into conservation decision-making, yet atlases are sometimes infrequently updated, which can be problematic when the distribution of species is changing rapidly. Despite this, we have a poor understanding of strategies for efficiently updating biological atlas data. Using atlases of the distributions of 1630 threatened plant taxa, we quantitatively compared the informativeness of narrowly distributed and widespread taxa in identifying areas that meet taxon-specific conservation targets, and also measured the cost-efficiency of meeting those targets. We also explored the underlying mechanisms of the informativeness of narrowly distributed taxa. Overall, narrowly distributed taxa are far more informative than widespread taxa for identifying areas that efficiently meet conservation targets, while their informativeness for identifying cost-efficient areas varied depending on the type of conservation target. Narrowly distributed taxa are informative mainly because their distributions disproportionately capture areas that are either relatively taxon rich or taxon poor, and because of larger number of taxa captured with given number of records. Where resources for updating biological data are limited, a focus on areas supporting many narrowly distributed taxa could benefit conservation planning.

  • Disconnection between conservation awareness and outcome: Identifying a bottleneck on non-native species introduction via footwear

    JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
ACADEMIC PRESS LTD- ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD
Unintentional seed introduction mediated by visitor's clothing and footwear is a major source of biological invasion into natural areas. To effectively avert these unintentional introductions, we must understand the links that connect relevant knowledge and desired outcome (i.e., seeds not carried on visitor's belongings); however, until now, these links have not been examined. Here, we investigated the links among a visitor's knowledge about biological invasion, awareness of biological invasion, behavior to prevent introduction (cleaning footwear), and being a seed carrier to identify a potential bottleneck between visitor knowledge and ecological outcome. In order to achieve this, we conducted a questionnaire survey and soil sampling from the footwear of visitors to an alpine national park. Soil samples (n = 344) were subjected to a germination experiment, and the number of emerged seedlings was recorded for each sample. We observed seedlings emerging from 27 soil samples (7.8 % of visitors; 44 seedlings in total), comprising non-native species. The degree of a visitor's knowledge about biological invasion increased with the increase in the degree of awareness. However, the high degree of awareness was not linked with the actual behavior of cleaning their footwear before the visit, although footwear cleaning effectively reduced the number of emerged seedlings. We found the lack of a clear association between awareness and behavior (cleaning the footwear) to be the bottleneck. We also investigated the major sources of knowledge about human-mediated seed introduction from footwear and found that television was the most important information source. The key to effectively preventing negative impacts on ecosystems caused by the introduction of non-native species could be to revise methods for informing the community, which will help overcome the bottleneck between awareness and behavior.

The widely held assumption that any important scientific information would be available in English underlies the underuse of non-English-language science across disciplines. However, non-English-language science is expected to bring unique and valuable scientific information, especially in disciplines where the evidence is patchy, and for emergent issues where synthesising available evidence is an urgent challenge. Yet such contribution of non-English-language science to scientific communities and the application of science is rarely quantified. Here, we show that non-English-language studies provide crucial evidence for informing global biodiversity conservation. By screening 419,679 peer-reviewed papers in 16 languages, we identified 1,234 non-English-language studies providing evidence on the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation interventions, compared to 4,412 English-language studies identified with the same criteria. Relevant non-English-language studies are being published at an increasing rate in 6 out of the 12 languages where there were a sufficient number of relevant studies. Incorporating non-English-language studies can expand the geographical coverage (i.e., the number of 2 degrees x 2 degrees grid cells with relevant studies) of English-language evidence by 12% to 25%, especially in biodiverse regions, and taxonomic coverage (i.e., the number of species covered by the relevant studies) by 5% to 32%, although they do tend to be based on less robust study designs. Our results show that synthesising non-English-language studies is key to overcoming the widespread lack of local, context-dependent evidence and facilitating evidence-based conservation globally. We urge wider disciplines to rigorously reassess the untapped potential of non-English-language science in informing decisions to address other global challenges.

Methods We used 126,524 plots of eight standard grain sizes from the GrassPlot database: 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 m(2) and calculated the mean richness and standard deviations, as well as maximum, minimum, median, and first and third quartiles for each combination of grain size, taxonomic group, biome, region, vegetation type and phytosociological class. Results Patterns of plant diversity in vegetation types and biomes differ across grain sizes and taxonomic groups. Overall, secondary (mostly semi-natural) grasslands and natural grasslands are the richest vegetation type. The open-access file GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks and the web tool GrassPlot Diversity Explorer are now available online () and provide more insights into species richness patterns in the Palaearctic open habitats. Conclusions The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks provide high-quality data on species richness in open habitat types across the Palaearctic. These benchmark data can be used in vegetation ecology, macroecology, biodiversity conservation and data quality checking. While the amount of data in the underlying GrassPlot database and their spatial coverage are smaller than in other extensive vegetation-plot databases, species recordings in GrassPlot are on average more complete, making it a valuable complementary data source in macroecology.

For diurnal nonhuman primates, shifting among different sleeping sites may provide multiple benefits such as better protection from predators, reduced risk of parasitic infection, and closer proximity to spatially and temporally heterogeneous food and water. This last benefit may be particularly important in sleeping site selection by primates living in savanna-woodlands where rainfall is more limited and more seasonally pronounced than in rainforests. Here, we examined the influence of rainfall, a factor that affects food and water availability, on the use of sleeping sites by anubis baboons (Papio anubis) over two 13-month study periods that differed in rainfall patterns. We predicted that during wet periods, when food and water availability should be higher, the study group would limit the number of sleeping sites and would stay at each one for more consecutive nights than during dry periods. Conversely, we predicted that during dry periods the group would increase the number of sleeping sites and stay at each one for fewer consecutive nights as they searched more widely for food and water. We also predicted that the group would more often choose sleeping sites closer to the center of the area used during daytime (between 07:00 and 19:00) during wet months than during dry months. Using Global Positioning System data from collared individuals, we found that our first prediction was not supported on either monthly or yearly timescales, although past monthly rainfall predicted the use of the main sleeping site in the second study period. Our second prediction was supported only on a yearly timescale. This study suggests that baboons' choice of sleeping sites is fluid over time while being sensitive to local environmental conditions, one of which may be rainfall.

Grazing by ungulates can affect seed production in plants, and consequently seed recruitment into seed banks, which is a plant strategy to increase their resilience. The impact of grazing on seed quantity has been well studied; however, the impact of grazing on seed quality has received less attention, despite its role in determining the longevity of a seed bank. Here, we examined the impact of ungulate grazing on seed quality in plants, using two grazing-intolerant grassland species (Hemerocallis dumortieri var. esculenta and Geranium yesoense var. nipponicum). We found that grazing reduced seed length and weight, while increasing the germination rate. These changes in seed quality induced by grazing could reduce the persistence of seed banks and would thus seem to be an important mechanism involved in the impact of ungulate grazing on plant population dynamics.

It is increasingly evident that the general public's recognition of local flora and fauna is typically inaccurate, because the majority of species are not recognized by ordinary people. These incorrect perceptions are a concern because they could lead to decreased public motivation for conservation and reduced health and well-being benefits that people gain when interacting with nature. However, there remains limited knowledge of how well ordinary people recognize wild plants and animals in their local areas and how the levels of recognition vary among the general public. We conducted a questionnaire survey among urban park users in Zenpukuji Park in Tokyo to assess their levels of recognition of birds and flowering plants and determined the factors that affect their recognition of these taxa. We asked participants to report their own personal characteristics and whether or not they had observed each of 24 common bird and 24 flowering plants species found in the park. Numbers of bird and plant species recognized by participants varied greatly, with those who visited the park frequently and who had greater taxonomic knowledge reporting higher numbers. Moreover, the traits of each of the study bird and plant species were associated with the numbers of participants who recognized them. Our results suggest that both the individual's personal characteristics and species' ecological traits determine park users' recognition of local biodiversity. Increasing individuals' use of urban greenspace and strengthening their orientation toward and familiarity with wildlife, especially species that may be less noticeable, would contribute to enhancing their perceptions of the local wildlife.

Aim Climate variability threatens to destabilize production in many ecosystems. Asynchronous species dynamics may buffer against such variability when a decrease in performance by some species is offset by an increase in performance of others. However, high climatic variability can eliminate species through stochastic extinctions or cause similar stress responses among species that reduce buffering. Local conditions, such as soil nutrients, can also alter production stability directly or by influencing asynchrony. We test these hypotheses using a globally distributed sampling experiment. Location Grasslands in North America, Europe and Australia. Time period Annual surveys over 5 year intervals occurring between 2007 and 2014. Major taxa studied Herbaceous plants. Methods We sampled annually the per species cover and aboveground community biomass [net primary productivity (NPP)], plus soil chemical properties, in 29 grasslands. We tested how soil conditions, combined with variability in precipitation and temperature, affect species richness, asynchrony and temporal stability of primary productivity. We used bivariate relationships and structural equation modelling to examine proximate and ultimate relationships. Results Climate variability strongly predicted asynchrony, whereas NPP stability was more related to soil conditions. Species richness was structured by both climate variability and soils and, in turn, increased asynchrony. Variability in temperature and precipitation caused a unimodal asynchrony response, with asynchrony being lowest at low and high climate variability. Climate impacted stability indirectly, through its effect on asynchrony, with stability increasing at higher asynchrony owing to lower inter-annual variability in NPP. Soil conditions had no detectable effect on asynchrony but increased stability by increasing the mean NPP, especially when soil organic matter was high. Main conclusions We found globally consistent evidence that climate modulates species asynchrony but that the direct effect on stability is low relative to local soil conditions. Nonetheless, our observed unimodal responses to variability in temperature and precipitation suggest asynchrony thresholds, beyond which there are detectable destabilizing impacts of climate on primary productivity.

Meta-analysis plays a crucial role in syntheses of quantitative evidence in ecology and biodiversity conservation. The reliability of estimates in meta-analyses strongly depends on unbiased sampling of primary studies. Although earlier studies have explored potential biases in ecological meta-analyses, biases in reported statistical results and associated study characteristics published in different languages have never been tested in environmental sciences. We address this knowledge gap by systematically searching published meta-analyses and comparing effect-size estimates between English- and Japanese-language studies included in existing meta-analyses. Of the 40 published ecological meta-analysis articles authored by those affiliated to Japanese institutions, we find that three meta-analysis articles searched for studies in the two languages and involved sufficient numbers of English- and Japanese-language studies, resulting in four eligible meta-analyses (i.e., four meta-analyses conducted in the three meta-analysis articles). In two of the four, effect sizes differ significantly between the English- and Japanese-language studies included in the meta-analyses, causing considerable changes in overall mean effect sizes and even their direction when Japanese-language studies are excluded. The observed differences in effect sizes are likely attributable to systematic differences in reported statistical results and associated study characteristics, particularly taxa and ecosystems, between English- and Japanese-language studies. Despite being based on a small sample size, our findings suggest that ignoring non-English-language studies may bias outcomes of ecological meta-analyses, due to systematic differences in study characteristics and effect-size estimates between English- and non-English languages. We provide a list of actions that meta-analysts could take in the future to reduce the risk of language bias.

  • Interaction exposure effects of multiple disturbances: plant population resilience to ungulate grazing is reduced by creation of canopy gaps
    Shinoda, Yushin; Akasaka, Munemitsu
    SCIENTIFIC REPORTS
    NATURE RESEARCH
The impact of multiple disturbances on populations could be synergistic or antagonistic via disturbance interaction and are considered to be provoked by alternation of the impact of an ecosystem disturbance due to the effect of a preceding disturbance. The impact of a focal disturbance can also change when a preceding disturbance alters the proportion of individuals in a population exposed to these disturbances (i.e., interaction exposure effects), although this effect has not been addressed to date. Herein, we propose and test interaction exposure effects by elucidating disturbance interactions between canopy gap formation and ungulate grazing. Based on a vegetation and seed bank survey conducted on an island in Hokkaido, northern Japan, we examined whether canopy openness changes the impact of ungulate grazing on the occurrence probability of palatable plant species through the facilitation of germination. Species occurrence in the seed bank significantly decreased with increasing canopy openness under the presence of grazing; however, it slightly increased under the absence of grazing, suggesting that gap creation, which facilitates germination, exposes the seed bank to ungulate grazing. Because disturbances of various types often modify the habitat structure, these proposed disturbance interactions are expected to operate within various ecosystems and taxa.

  • Rapid behavioural responses of native frogs caused by past predation pressure from invasive mongooses

Invasive predators not only cause native prey populations to decline but can also induce evolutionary changes in their behaviour in a short time scale. However, few studies have reported these rapid responses. This could be because strong predation pressure by invasive species often causes the extinction of native prey before an evolutionary effect can be detected. Recently, eradication projects successfully removed invasive predators and resulted in the recovery of native prey. We predicted that rapid responses can be detected by evaluating the behavioural traits of native prey populations having different histories of predator invasion. We examined the behavioural responses of a native frog, the Amami tip-nosed frog (Odorrana amamiensis), to an invasive mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus) on Amami Island, Japan. The native frog population was reduced by the mongoose; however, the eradication project leads to the recovery of the native frog population, thereby providing an opportunity to evaluate the evolutionary impact of the invasive species. We hypothesized that spatial differences in flight initiation distance (FID) can be explained by spatial patterns of past mongoose predation pressure. We used a spatial model based on generalized least squares regression methods to test the effects of potential factors on FID. We then performed model comparison and model averaging. We found that the native frog became more sensitive to the approach of a potential predator as the historical impact of the mongoose increased, suggesting that past strong predation pressure by the mongoose drove a rapid behavioural response in the native frog. Our study suggests that rapid behavioural responses of other native species can be detected not only after successful eradication projects, but also on currently invaded sites with different invasion histories.

    LANDSCAPE AND URBAN PLANNING
    ELSEVIER
As the world becomes more urbanised, people are becoming progressively disconnected from nature. This large-scale disengagement of humans from nature, or ”extinction of experience,” is viewed both as a major public health issue and as a fundamental obstacle to halting the global biodiversity crisis. For most of humanity, urban greenspace is the primary means by which someone can directly interact with nature in their daily lives. A key challenge is how to facilitate the active engagement of urban residents with that environment. Here, we examined the drivers of people's use of urban greenspaces in Tokyo, Japan. In an online questionnaire, participants (n = 1048) provided information on socio-demographics, frequency and duration of greenspace use in the prior 2 weeks, and the extent of their positive attitudes towards nature (nature orientation). We also measured the structure of the neighbourhood landscape surrounding each participant's home. The probability of greenspace use (i.e., whether an individual used it) was determined mainly by nature orientation, but also by the number of greenspaces around the home. Frequency and duration of greenspace use were positively associated with the number of vegetation types near the home and with individuals' nature orientation. Overall, our results showed that urban residents' use of neighbourhood greenspaces is driven by multiple landscape- and orientation-related factors. Thus, to reduce the extinction of experience, policy makers should not rely on a single management or policy approach but should combine various approaches in ways that will effectively promote people's direct nature experiences.

An intensively debated issue in ecology is whether variability in the patterns of diversity of different groups of organisms is congruent in space, a phenomenon referred to as cross-taxon congruence. Whereas this has been previously mainly tested in terms of taxonomic dissimilarity, the role of ecological processes in determining the congruence of multiple diversity facets (i.e. alpha- and beta-diversity, taxonomic, and functional) remains poorly understood. We used a data set of observation records for 469 macrophyte and 543 fish taxa at the catchment-scale from the existing literature and data bases to test the existence of multi-faceted congruence patterns and investigate the variables driving them across 214 catchments covering the whole Chinese mainland. We found cross-taxon congruence of multiple diversity aspects between fish and macrophyte communities. The energy (i.e. diversity is limited by energy availability), area/environmental heterogeneity (i.e. diversity is higher in larger and more heterogeneous areas), and dispersal (i.e. diversity is driven by dispersal) hypotheses were all significantly attributed to the cross-taxon congruence, suggesting the existence of key repeated mechanisms underlying assemblage organisation. Our study provides new evidence that can further our understanding of the factors and underlying processes explaining cross-taxon congruence patterns at broad spatial scales in the freshwater realm, the studies of which significantly lag those in the marine and terrestrial realms. The present findings also provide important baseline information for freshwater conservation initiatives.

An understanding of relationships between species diversity and disturbance gradient is important to comprehend the role of disturbances in the structure of plant communities. Although some studies have demonstrated incongruence in diversity-disturbance relationships (hereafter DDRs) between aboveground vegetation and soil seedbank, the process that causes the difference remains unclear. This incongruence between the two DDRs could result in the decrease in the source of recovery of aboveground vegetation following disturbances being overlooked when only aboveground vegetation is surveyed. Here, we verified a process that species turnover across the disturbance gradient causes the incongruence. Based on a vegetation and seedbank survey, we examined DDRs and species turnover of aboveground vegetation and seedbank along disturbance duration (i.e., excluding years of ungulate grazing). The degree of species turnover was considerably greater in aboveground vegetation than in seedbank; thus, the degree of species turnover along a disturbance gradient caused the difference in DDR between aboveground vegetation and seedbank.

Propagule supply and habitat suitability strongly influence the success of invasive alien plants. Thus, an invaded area is likely to have an adequate propagule supply, a suitable habitat, or both for species persistence. Based on this idea, we classified invaded areas into four categories as follows but with establishment still occurring in some cases: Class 1, adequate propagule supply and habitat suitability; Class 2, adequate propagule supply but limited habitat suitability; Class 3, limited propagule supply and adequate habitat suitability; and Class 4, mid- to low-level propagule supply and habitat suitability. We propose a framework for the classification of invaded areas into these four classes and present a case study in which this framework was applied. Classifying target areas in this manner could facilitate more efficient and practical management planning, thereby saving time and resources. We selected the alien shrub Leucaena leucocephala L. (Fabaceae) as a model species, which has invaded the Nakodo-jima Island in the Ogasawara Archipelago of Japan. We developed a species distribution model by incorporating proxy variables for propagule supply and habitat suitability as well as submodels for propagule supply or habitat suitability. Using these submodels, we estimated the levels of propagule supply and habitat suitability in each, and classified the current distribution range appropriately. Using these classifications, land managers could set priorities to concentrate their efforts to efficiently control target species.

Conservation planning has generally used models with a static spatial distribution of species to predict the likely occurrence of species. However, static data do not usually capture rapid changes in the abundance of endangered species or cryptic life stages such as the dormancy stage of eggs and seeds. Little is known about how neglecting dynamic population processes, such as recovery processes, can affect the outcomes of spatial prioritization in conservation planning. In this study, we investigated the distribution of 62 aquatic plant species, including 23 threatened species, in 415 agricultural ponds for 37 years to examine the importance of including recovery processes in conservation planning. Using long-term historical presence-absence data and seedbank longevity data for aquatic macrophytes, we estimated rates of population disappearance and recovery for each species in each pond over the next 100 years. Average rates of recovery exceeded 0, 0.2, and 0.4 in 85.4%, 40.3%, and 4.8% of aquatic plant species, respectively. Simulation results suggested that the extinction risk for a species greatly decreased when recovery processes were considered. We found that including recovery processes in target species populations increased the performance of spatial prioritization by protecting more species in a smaller number of protected ponds. Spatial ranking of ponds for species conservation differed substantially among scenarios that included and excluded population recovery processes, suggesting that conservation priorities based on complementarity analysis are sensitive to underlying assumptions. Synthesis and applications. Our dynamic approach, which considers recovery processes of species, contributes to more effective conservation planning by reducing bias in the prediction of species' state, given that cryptic life stages are ubiquitous among many plants and some animals. Time-series presence/absence data on target species are quite useful for the approach and are often archived by participatory monitoring. Thus, the opportunities for applying our method are broad, especially for conservation prioritization and decision-making at the local scale.

Major earthquakes cause widespread environmental and socioeconomic disruptions that persist for decades. Extensive ground disturbances that occurred during the shallow-focus Kumamoto earthquakes will affect future sustainability of ecosystem services west of Aso volcano. Numbers of earthquake-initiated landslides per unit area were higher in grasslands than forests, likely owing to greater root reinforcement of trees, and mostly initiated on ridgelines and/or convex/planar hillslopes. Most landslides traveled short distances and did not initially evolve into debris flows; resultant sediments and wood accumulating in headwater channels can be mobilized into debris flows during future storms. Fissures along ridgelines may promote water ingress and induce future landslides and debris flows that affect residents downstream. Native grasses are at risk because of habitat fragmentation caused by ground disturbances, extensive damage to rural roads, and abandonment of traditional pasture management practices. Sustainable management of affected areas needs to consider future risk of cascading hazards and long-term socioeconomic impacts.

Hotspots of amphibian species diversity typically occur in limited geographical ranges, and critically endangered habitats often contain a large number of endemic amphibian species. In such regions, it is prudent to engage conservation strategies for multiple amphibian species simultaneously. To correctly identify suitable habitats for multiple species, species interactions should be considered in species distribution models. In this study, we adopted a joint species distribution model to determine the abiotic and biotic factors that affect calling-site choice in three endangeredco-occurring frog species on Amami-Oshima Island, and examined whether they co-occur more than expected after considering the overlapping preferences in environmental variables. Occurrences of Babina subaspera, Odorrana splendida, and O. amamiensis were assessed by monitoring mating calls using automatic digital voice recorders at 67 sites in 12 streams and explained by 8 environmental variables: water flow volume, temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, ammonium (NF4+-N) concentration, elevation, slope, and forest stand age. The flow volume was negatively associated with occurrences in B. subaspera and O. splendida, but not O. amamiensis. Odorrana splendida occurred more frequently at higher elevations. Bobina subaspera and O. splendida showed positive environmental correlations, indicating that they preferred similar environmental conditions, while exhibiting no negative relationships with each other. Our results indicated that B. subaspera and O. splendida do not avoid each other despite potential competition during the tadpole stage. Our results demonstrated that conserving preferable areas for O. splendida would also benefit B. subaspera with no negative species interactions, but not O. arnalniensis. Considering species interactions in species distribution models will help us take more effective measures in the conservation of multiple species.

Aim: Abandoned lands are expanding globally due to depopulation in rural areas; bio-diversity is declining due to the cessation of traditional management practices. However, the awareness of abandonment as a serious threat is still limited. Knowledge of the influence of the responsible factors on the assessment of regional extinction risk of species due to abandonment is sparse although it is indispensable for conservation decision-making. This study aimed to clarify the influence of the heterogeneity in abandonment risk and interspecies differences in sensitivity to abandonment on regional species extinction risk and to identify the attributes of the species whose extinction risk is prone to be assessed inaccurately by ignoring the abandonment risk. Location: Awaji Island, Hyogo, Western Japan. Methods: We assessed the extinction risk of 64 species of macrophytes under four scenarios: 2 x 2 combinations whether to incorporate interspecies differences in sensitivity to abandonment and the abandonment risk, respectively. Results: Ignoring the abandonment risk overestimated the extinction risk of most species by 10%, whereas ignoring interspecies differences in sensitivity did not significantly affect the extinction risk. Ignoring the abandonment risk overestimated the extinction risk of emergent plants by 12%, whereas it underestimated that of free-floating plants or threatened plants by 5%. Spatial bias in abandonment risk markedly reduced the correlation between the extinction risk and the frequency of species occurrence. Main conclusions: The abandonment risk was more effective in accurately assessing the extinction risk due to abandonment than interspecies differences in sensitivity. Extinction risk of emergent, free-floating or threatened species were assessed inaccurately by ignoring the abandonment risk. Focusing only on the area of occurrence or the extent of occurrence of a species as a surrogate for its extinction risk is likely to produce inaccurate assessments, and thus should be avoided.

Effective conservation of global species diversity requires a clear understanding of spatial scales that support overall diversity across broad scales. Abandonment of semi natural grasslands has increased their fragmentation and decreased their areal extent. We quantified diversity patterns of plant communities in Japan across hierarchical scales to facilitate the development of an effective nationwide strategy for conserving species diversity in remnant semi-natural grasslands. We applied additive partitioning of plant species diversity, using a nested hierarchical design at three spatial scales (quadrat, grassland, and western and eastern regions of Japan) for three groups of plant species (all species, grassland species and national Red Listed species). We consistently found lower proportions of among quadrats diversity, and higher proportions of among-grasslands diversity and between-regions diversity in the overall diversity of the entire species complement than would be expected by chance. The high contribution of among-grasslands diversity to overall diversity suggests that each grassland had a unique species content. The second-ranking contributor to overall diversity differed between grassland species and Red Listed species: the second-ranking contributor for grassland species was diversity at the among quadrats scale but the second-ranking contributor for all species and for Red Listed species was diversity at the between -regions scale. Thus, effective conservation of diversity of the entire species complement in remnant semi natural grasslands requires preservation of beta diversity in individual grasslands. Our findings highlight the importance of strengthening local preservation and restoration activities within each grassland, and of nationwide strategies for conserving Red Listed species in remnant semi-natural grassland communities.

Regional-scale pond diversity is supported by high variation in community composition. To effectively and efficiently conserve pond regional diversity, it is essential to recognize the community types in a focal region and the scales of the factors influencing the occurrence of respective community types. Based on a flora survey and GIS analysis of 367 ponds in western Japan, we developed a multinomial regression model that describes the relationship between aquatic macrophyte community type (based on cluster analysis) and five environmental factors that differ in the spatial scale at which they operate (i.e., landscape or local scale) and origin (i.e., natural or anthropogenic). A change in topographic configuration resulted in a transition of the community types with high species richness. Increasing urban and agricultural area around ponds resulted in a decrease in species-rich community occurrence; an increase in urban area increased the probability of a pond having no macrophytes, whereas that of paddy field increased the probability of a pond having only a few macrophytes. Pond surface area and proportion of artificial embankment significantly defined the pond community: greater embankment proportions increased the probability of ponds having few or no macrophytes. Our results suggest that conserving regional pond biodiversity will require actions not only at a local scale but also at a sufficiently large spatial scale to cover the full gradient of topographic configurations that influence the macrophyte species composition in ponds.

GrassPlot is a collaborative vegetation-plot database organised by the Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG) and listed in the Global Index of Vegetation-Plot Databases (GIVD ID EU-00-003). GrassPlot collects plot records (releves) from grasslands and other open habitats of the Palaearctic biogeographic realm. It focuses on precisely delimited plots of eight standard grain sizes (0.0001; 0.001;... 1,000 m(2)) and on nested-plot series with at least four different grain sizes. The usage of GrassPlot is regulated through Bylaws that intend to balance the interests of data contributors and data users. The current version (v. 1.00) contains data for approximately 170,000 plots of different sizes and 2,800 nested-plot series. The key components are richness data and metadata. However, most included datasets also encompass compositional data. About 14,000 plots have near-complete records of terricolous bryophytes and lichens in addition to vascular plants. At present, GrassPlot contains data from 36 countries throughout the Palaearctic, spread across elevational gradients and major grassland types. GrassPlot with its multi-scale and multi-taxon focus complements the larger international vegetationplot databases, such as the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and the global database ” sPlot”. Its main aim is to facilitate studies on the scale-and taxon-dependency of biodiversity patterns and drivers along macroecological gradients. GrassPlot is a dynamic database and will expand through new data collection coordinated by the elected Governing Board. We invite researchers with suitable data to join GrassPlot. Researchers with project ideas addressable with GrassPlot data are welcome to submit proposals to the Governing Board.

QuestionsAbandonment of anthropogenic ecosystems threatens biodiversity in rural areas globally. Successional responses in anthropogenic ecosystems have been shown to differ from those in natural ecosystems because of the legacy of continuous management activities. However, few studies have focused on successional changes in anthropogenic freshwater ecosystems following abandonment. Focusing on two drivers (water depletion and cessation of anthropogenic disturbance), we tested whether water depletion plays a larger role than years since abandonment in determining the both plant functional diversity and composition in farm ponds. LocationAwaji Island, western Japan. MethodsWe investigated flora at 200 farm ponds, which had experienced long-term continuous anthropogenic disturbance. We interviewed 100 managers of the surveyed ponds and local farmers to identify the ponds' management status. To capture community processes during succession, we focused on functional richness and functional trait composition. We assessed the relative contribution of the two successional drivers in determining functional richness by adopting a linear model. We classified the survey ponds into five groups based on the two successional drivers and performed PERMANOVA to test differences in functional composition among the groups. ResultsWater depletion played a larger role than elapsed time since cessation of anthropogenic disturbance in determining functional richness. Functional composition of water-depleted ponds significantly differed from that of managed ponds, regardless of years since abandonment. ConclusionsOur results indicate that water depletion has a larger effect on successional changes in ponds than cessation of anthropogenic disturbance; that is, water depletion drives succession and overrides the legacy of continuous anthropogenic disturbance. The results suggest that, in freshwater ecosystems, the functional change in a community is greater in the transition from macrophytes to terrestrial plants than it is in the transition from stress-tolerant species to competitive species.

The larval and adult stages of amphibious animals are affected by both aquatic and terrestrial habitat characteristics, and each stage also affects the other. However, this link between life stages has been largely overlooked in previous studies. We examined the effect of aquatic and terrestrial habitat characteristics on the diversity of larval and adult odonates, taking into account the link between the two life stages. Species diversity of adult and larval odonates and aquatic plants, as well as patterns of land use, was investigated in 63 irrigation ponds. We created structural equation models, with paths from land use and aquatic plants characteristics to larval and adult stages of odonates, as well as between the two stages, and chose the best model based on the lowest Akaike information criterion. Adult odonates, but not larvae, were affected by aquatic and terrestrial habitat characteristics, suggesting that the former is the key stage for odonate communities. We observed a positive relationship between the diversity of aquatic plants and larval odonates, but this was in fact due to the effects of aquatic plants on adults, which carried over to the larval stage. Our study showed that a consideration of the link between life stages is crucial for a complete understanding of the relationship between habitat characteristics and amphibious animal populations.

Farm ponds are among the most biodiverse anthropogenic freshwater habitats because of their small size, shallow water depth, and aquatic vegetation. Land-use changes, such as converting riparian vegetation to human use or changing the management practices of farm ponds, are assumed to be major factors that change such ecosystems from a clear-water state to a turbid state, leading to deterioration of water quality and biodiversity in such ponds. Using the database of a large-scale pond survey, we evaluated the effects of surrounding land use (landscape factors and modern pond management practices), fish abundance, and other environmental variables on total phosphorus concentration and taxonomic richness patterns of six biological indicators associated with changes in the trophic state. Local- and landscape-level vegetation structure associated with land use and total fish abundance were among the factors influencing the total phosphorus concentration of farm ponds, a main driver of trophic state changes. In addition, a transition from a clear-water state to a turbid state was associated with lower taxonomic richness of aquatic plants, macroinvertebrates, and adult Odonata, and a higher taxonomic richness of phytoplankton and fish. Based on these results, we discuss potential land-use and pond management strategies for conserving and/or restoring the water quality and biodiversity of farm ponds through maintenance of a clear-water state.

Aim We studied global variation in beta diversity patterns of lake macrophytes using regional data from across the world. Specifically, we examined (1) how beta diversity of aquatic macrophytes is partitioned between species turnover and nestedness within each study region, and (2) which environmental characteristics structure variation in these beta diversity components. Location Global. Methods We used presence-absence data for aquatic macrophytes from 21 regions distributed around the world. We calculated pairwise-site and multiple-site beta diversity among lakes within each region using SOrensen dissimilarity index and partitioned it into turnover and nestedness coefficients. Beta regression was used to correlate the diversity coefficients with regional environmental characteristics. Results Aquatic macrophytes showed different levels of beta diversity within each of the 21 study regions, with species turnover typically accounting for the majority of beta diversity, especially in high-diversity regions. However, nestedness contributed 30-50% of total variation in macrophyte beta diversity in low-diversity regions. The most important environmental factor explaining the three beta diversity coefficients (total, species turnover and nestedness) was elevation range, followed by relative areal extent of freshwater, latitude and water alkalinity range. Main conclusions Our findings show that global patterns in beta diversity of lake macrophytes are caused by species turnover rather than by nestedness. These patterns in beta diversity were driven by natural environmental heterogeneity, notably variability in elevation range (also related to temperature variation) among regions. In addition, a greater range in alkalinity within a region, likely amplified by human activities, was also correlated with increased macrophyte beta diversity. These findings suggest that efforts to conserve aquatic macrophyte diversity should primarily focus on regions with large numbers of lakes that exhibit broad environmental gradients.

  • Evaluating the local habitat history deepens the understanding of the extinction debt for endangered plant species in semi-natural grasslands

Habitat losses occur non-randomly within human-modified landscapes, resulting in high spatial heterogeneity of local habitat histories. Although local habitat history can modulate the existence of extinction debt (i.e., the number of populations predicted to become extinct) in a landscape, its role in detecting extinction debt has not been examined explicitly. We aimed to compare the detectability of extinction debt among populations of an endangered semi-natural grassland species, Echinops setifer (Compositae), in the grassland landscape of Mt. Aso, Japan. We classified populations into three groups that differed in local habitat history: stable (habitat loss ae30% since the 1930s), moderately decreased (30% < loss ae 90%), and severely decreased (loss > 90%). We then evaluated whether the effects of habitat areas during the 1930s and 2000s varied among groups to explain population size by GLMMs and estimated coefficient of explanatory variable by Bayesian MCMC methods. Within the groups, stable group showed significant positive relationships with both past and current habitat areas. The moderately decreased group only showed significant positive relationships with past habitat areas, indicating the existence of extinction debt in these populations. The severely decreased group only showed significant positive relationships with current habitat areas, indicating that they may have already paid their extinction debt because the rate of grassland loss exceeded the extinction threshold. Even within the same landscape, extinction debt varied in response to local habitat history. In spatially heterogeneous landscapes, evaluation of effects of local habitat history can elucidate the habitat-based extinction risks for plant populations.

  • Incorporating habitats of plants and ungulates contributes to prioritize targets for conserving regional plant diversity

Overgrazing caused by overabundant ungulates exceeding the land carrying capacity induces catastrophic ecological problems. Installation of ungulate-proof fences is an effective management tool to protect plants from overgrazing. However, an efficient framework to prioritize conservation targets (i. e., plant species to be protected by the fences and areas to install the fences) for maintaining plant diversity under limited resources has yet to be formulated. At a regional scale, the possibility of plants being encountered and grazed by ungulates would increase when the habitats of plants and that of foraging ungulates overlap. We tested the utility of incorporating the encounter tendency as well as the palatability of each plant species to identify areas for preferential installation of fences to secure regional plant diversity. We conducted a plant survey in five 3 x 3 m quadrats at 30 stands at Minakami, Gunma, Japan, and recorded the presence or absence of ungulate grazing scars for all plant shoots within a height of 25-200 cm at each quadrat. We developed a regression model in which the presence or absence of a grazing scar was explained by the susceptibility of a plant species to grazing (palatability) and the susceptibility of the quadrats to visitation by ungulates (visitability). The encounter tendency of respective species was then evaluated based on the visitability of quadrats and the frequency distribution of their shoots across the quadrats. Of 211 plant species examined, 121 showed significant values of either or both palatability and encounter tendency, whereas the two metrics were mutually independent. In addition, using a simulation model, we showed that the median of the number of species lost in a region would be 1.8-fold smaller over 20 yr when considering both the palatability and the encounter tendency to identify areas for the installation of ungulate-proof fences as compared to considering only palatability. We suggest that accounting for both palatability and encounter tendency would greatly improve our capacity to identify priority areas for the installation of ungulate-proof fences to efficiently ensure the persistence of regional plant diversity.

Questions: Does reintroducing grassland management aid in the recovery of vegetation with high grassland species diversity in abandoned semi-natural grasslands? How do management tools and local topographic factors influence themagnitude of recovery? Do effective restoration tools and sites differ depending onmeasurement indices (community-and species-level responses)? Location: Semi-natural grasslands surrounding Mt. Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. Methods: We conducted vegetation surveys in grassland sites with two land-use forms (continuously managed/restored after abandonment) and two management types (burning only/burning and mowing). We assessed restoration success by examining plant species composition using the similarity index. We also examined the community-level (i.e. species richness) and species-level (i.e. species occurrence) responses to land-use form, management type and local topographic factors (elevation and slope aspect). Results: Reintroduction of grassland management can recover the plant species composition of restored sites. Combined burning and mowing management was a principal determinant of the species richness and occurrence of most grassland species. A north-facing slope was a clear topographic determinant of higher species richness. However, we also found that the presence of some of the grassland's endangered species (i.e. Achillea alpina subsp. subcartilaginea, Artemisia stolonifera and Viola orientalis) was limited in continuously managed sites and that the response to topographic factorswas species-specific. Conclusions: The reintroduction of combined burning and mowing management in various topographic areas is essential for both plant diversity recovery and local endangered species conservation for the restoration of abandoned semi-natural grasslands. Our results also suggest that selecting restoration sites on northern slopes can enhance the recovery of plant species diversity.

Protected areas (PAs) spearhead global conservation efforts, but it has been repeatedly demonstrated that narrowly distributed species are more likely to be unrepresented in PAs. This means that where local extinctions are more likely outside PAs, a positive feedback loop could render PAs largely ineffective in decelerating extinctions, even where PAs effectively abate threats. Here we empirically test the elements of this feedback loop using distribution data for 1,572 threatened plants in Japan. Narrowly distributed species were indeed less likely to overlap PAs than widespread species, and local extinction rates for unprotected populations over 15 years were 1.5 times higher than those inside PAs. A simulation model showed that new PAs will substantially reduce extinction risk for widespread species, but not for narrowly distributed species, unless they are placed very precisely in the landscape. Our results suggest that a representation-extinction feedback will limit the effectiveness of PAs in preventing extinctions unless PA placement is carefully targeted.

  • Climatic differences among habitats shape the balance between maximum lifespan and life expectancy in Japanese tree species

    NATURE PORTFOLIO
Old trees, often living for hundreds or even thousands of years, play vital roles in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, their extraordinary longevity occurs under rare circumstances, as most individuals succumb to mortality. From an optimal resource allocation perspective, species adopting a life-history strategy with a high potential maximum lifespan (PML) are expected to also have a higher life expectancy (LE). Here we developed a framework to assess the longevity of 1-cm-diameter trees and calculated the PML and LE for 53 major tree species in Japan. The results revealed that the PML (mean 378 years) was 4.7 times higher than the LE (mean 81 years). Both indices showed a positive correlation, with a regression slope of 0.34; however, the explanatory power of the model was low (R2 = 0.22). This can be attributed to the fact that LE exhibits a stronger negative response to climate-related habitat severity compared with that of PML. Our findings suggest two key points: (1) trees may adopt a hierarchical ordering of demographic parameters that prioritize long-term survival duration over average survival rate, and (2) considering this balance, which varies among species, could enhance the cost-effectiveness of ecosystem restoration.

  • The range of large terrestrial mammals has expanded into human-dominated landscapes in Japan

    SPRINGERNATURE
Large terrestrial mammals have generally declined due to human activity, but the recovery of some populations poses new issues for coexistence. Few studies to date have investigated drivers of this recovery and its impacts on human societies at the national scale. Here we assessed the range expansion of six large terrestrial mammal species over 40 years-sika deer, wild boar, Japanese serow, Japanese macaque, Asiatic black bear, and brown bear-by comparing newly occupied and unoccupied areas using distribution data in Japan. We found evidence that increased agricultural abandonment and decreased snowfall drove these range expansions. The range of all six species expanded from mountainous landscapes to those closer to human settlements, leading to increased conflicts that threaten people's property and safety. We predict that accelerating depopulation and climate warming could further expand the range of these species, and call for measures to mitigate conflicts and achieve coexistence with them.
