Metal oxide/carbon composite systems have been investigated extensively for fabrication of supercapacitors. To obtain high capacitance, a thick pseudocapacitive layer loaded on a conventional carbon support inevitably leads to high dead volume and poor rate/power characteristics. Herein, we propose a strategy with biomass-derived hierarchical porous carbon as supports to bridge two critical but mutually exclusive properties of super-capacitors: high capacitance and rapid ion/charge transport. Highly dispersed deposition of nanosized MnO2 and MnO on hierarchically porous carbon were achieved through slow redox reaction controlled by gradual hy-drolysis of fibrous polymers remaining in the hydrothermal carbon. High surface area, ultrathin pseudocapaci-tance layer, and wide voltage window (1.6-2 V) improve the synergy between the high energy density of MnOx and the high power density of porous carbon. The maximum energy density of 40.95 Wh kg-1 (at 180 W kg-1) and power density of 9000 W kg -1 (at 23.85 Wh kg -1) was realized for the assembled asymmetric/symmetric supercapacitors in aqueous electrolytes. More importantly, a cycle life comparable to that of carbon-based double-layer capacitors (95.6% capacitance retention after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles) could be ach-ieved. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) was also conducted to elaborate the differences between manganese valence states for in-depth understanding. The characteristics of low cost, environmental friendliness, and excellent performance highlight the great promise of biomass waste in designing carbon supports for elec-trochemical applications.

Porous carbon systems rich in heteroatoms can be used to achieve high energy density under conditions of high power density. However, it is difficult to evaluate the structure-effect relationships between the types of heteroatoms present in the systems and the electrochemical properties of the materials, leading to the trial-and-error approaches are still used to date for the development of high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, we report the process of synthesis of a series of biomass-derived carbon systems doped with heteroatoms and characterized by large specific surface areas and 3D hierarchical porous structures. We analyzed experimental evidence and results from theoretical simulations to establish doping principles with predictive electrochemical performance. The doping of N, S and O atoms in carbon materials successfully broadens the operating voltage (up to 1.8 V) in aqueous electrolytes and improves the landscape of capacitive ions adsorption. The doped materials are characterized by high energy density (25.2 Wh kg-1 at 180 W kg-1) and exhibit excellent cycling performance (97.6% capacity retention after 20,000 cycles). Our work provides a reference for rationally designing and tuning the heteroatom combination mode and pore structure distribution associated with the materials to develop advanced heteroatom-doped carbon electrodes.

A novel diglycidyl ether (BCNDGE) derived from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) was synthesized and used as a building block to formulate an epoxy resin. BCNDGE was synthesized by a two-step epoxidation reaction of a bio-based bisphenol starting from CNSL. Epoxy resins were prepared with BCNDGE and commercial bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BPADGE) with an acid anhydride hardener. The curing behaviors and chemical structures of the epoxy polymers were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. All cured epoxys were self-standing films regardless of the BCNDGE content. The gel contents of the epoxy films prepared with BCNDGE and BPADGE were over 90%, indicating that the curing reaction proceeded effectively. The thermal stability of the BCNDGE and BCNDGE/BPADGE films was greater than that of the epoxy prepared with commercial BPADGE, indicating that the long alkyl side chains of BCNDGE inhibited the attack from the reactive species formed during pyrolysis. The glass-transition temperatures of the BCNDGE/BPADGE films decreased with increasing BCNDGE content. These results demonstrate that the inclusion of BCNDGE enhanced the flexible nature of the polymer segments by acting as a plasticizer. Hence, BCNDGE is a promising novel diglycidyl ether candidate with high biomass content to act as an alternative to petroleum-based chemicals for epoxy resins.

Therapeutic cancer vaccines are considered as one of the most cost-effective ways to eliminate cancer cells. Although many efforts have been invested into improving their therapeutic effect, transient maturation and activations of dendritic cells (DCs) cause weak responses and hamper the subsequent T cell responses. Here, we report on an alum-stabilized Pickering emulsion (APE) that can load a high number of antigens and continue to release them for extensive maturation and activations of antigen-presenting cells (APCs). After two vaccinations, APE/OVA induced both IFN-& gamma;-secreting T cells (Th1) and IL-4-secreting T cells (Th2), generating effector CD8(+) T cells against tumor growth. Additionally, although they boosted the cellular immune responses in the spleen, we found that multiple administrations of cancer vaccines (three or four times in 3-day intervals) may increase the immunosuppression with more PD-1(+) CD8(+) and LAG-3(+) CD8(+) T cells within the tumor environment, leading to the diminished overall anti-tumor efficacy. Combining this with anti-PD-1 antibodies evidently hindered the suppressive effect of multiple vaccine administrations, leading to the amplified tumor regression in B16-OVA-bearing mice.

Returning straw-like agricultural waste to the field by converting it into hydrochar through hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an important way to realize resource utilization of waste, soil improvement, and carbon sequestration. However, the large-scale HTC is highly limited by the large water consumption and waste liquid pollution. Here, we propose strategies to optimize the liquid-solid ratio (LSR) of HTC, and comprehensively evaluate the stability, soil application potential, and economic benefits of corn stover-based hydrochar under different LSRs. The results showed that the total amount of dissolved organic carbon of hydrochars increased by 55.0% as LSR reducing from 10:1 to 2:1, while the element content, thermal stability, carbon fixation potential, specific surface area, pore volume, and functional group type were not obviously affected. The specific surface area and pore volume of hydrochar decreased by 61.8% and 70.9% as LSR reduced to 1:1, due to incomplete carbonization. According to the gray relation, hydrochar derived at LSR of 10:1 and followed by 2:1 showed greatest relation degree of 0.80 and 0.70, respectively, indicating better soil application potential. However, reducing LSR from 10:1 to 2:1 made the income of single process production increased from-388 to 968 yen , and the wastewater generation decreased by 80%. Considering the large-scale application of HTC in fields for farmland improvement and environmental remediation, the comprehensive advantages of optimized LSR will be further highlighted.

Current attempts in vaccine delivery systems concentrate on replicating the natural dissemination of live pathogens, but neglect that pathogens evolve to evade the immune system rather than to provoke it. In the case of enveloped RNA viruses, it is the natural dissemination of nucleocapsid protein (NP, core antigen) and surface antigen that delays NP exposure to immune surveillance. Here, we report a multi-layered aluminum hydroxide-stabilized emulsion (MASE) to dictate the delivery sequence of the antigens. In this manner, the receptor-binding domain (RBD, surface antigen) of the spike protein was trapped inside the nanocavity, while NP was absorbed on the outside of the droplets, enabling the burst release of NP before RBD. Compared with the natural packaging strategy, the inside-out strategy induced potent type I interferon-mediated innate immune responses and triggered an immune-potentiated environment in advance, which subsequently boosted CD40(+) DC activations and the engagement of the lymph nodes. In both H1N1 influenza and SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, rMASE significantly increased antigen-specific antibody secretion, memory T cell engagement, and Th1-biased immune response, which diminished viral loads after lethal challenge. By simply reversing the delivery sequence of the surface antigen and core antigen, the inside-out strategy may offer major implications for enhanced vaccinations against the enveloped RNA virus.

The patterns and mechanisms underlying the effects of different types of biochar on crop dry matter accumulation and uptake of major soil minerals are uncertain. This study demonstrated the positive effects of adding pyrochar (PC) and hydrochar (HC) to calcareous soils on nutrient uptake by maize seedlings and revealed the important role of mycorrhizal colonization. The effects depended on the type of biochar added and the type of nutrient evaluated. The dry weights of maize seedlings were higher in the HC and PC groups than in the control group, and the P accumulation was 17% higher than that of the control. Adding PC significantly increased Zn accumulation and the concentration and accumulation of Cu in maize seedlings, whereas adding HC increased the Fe concentration. Applying PC and HC also promoted mycorrhizal colonization of maize roots, and P, Zn, and Cu accumulations in the plant were positively correlated with the mycorrhizal colonization rate. This study found that applying PC and HC to calcareous soil at the tested application rate promotes the uptake of some mineral nutrients by maize at the seedling stage, and this effect was at least partially influenced by an increased mycorrhizal colonization rate in the plant root system.

Blood vasculature plays an essential role in transporting nanomaterials in vivo. However, the interaction between vascular endothelial cells (VECs) and nanomaterials lacked deep understanding, impeding the development of safe and efficient nanomedicine. Here, we discover that VECs can be significantly stimu-lated by two-dimensional PEGylated lamellar materials (PLMs) without being internalized. Additional ex-periments and computational simulations suggest that the unique VEC stimulation can be ascribed to the interaction between the PLMs and the membrane lipids, which induces ion-transport-related conforma-tional change of L-type calcium ion channel Cav1.3. Additionally, the in vivo studies demonstrate that PLMs-stimulated VECs have divergent impacts on two types of vasculature-associated diseases: exacerbating the development of atherosclerosis while magnifying the accumulation of nanomedicine within tumors. Thus, the current study not only advances our understanding of how specific proteins on VEC membranes could be stimulated by PLMs but also guides the rational use of promising PLMs in nanomedicine.(c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Cardanol, main component of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) which is an unused non-edible phenolic derivative, was hydrogenated, and subsequently converted to bisphenol compounds (Bis-CNSL) for the industrial intermediates in a variety of fields by reacting with carbonyl compounds in the presence of an acid catalyst without a solvent. It was found that Bis-CNSL was successfully obtained with high selec-tivity using aldehydes with alkyl chains of 2 or more carbons. We have established a large-scale prepa-ration process using propionaldehyde by reducing the amount of aldehyde to 0.25 equivalents to suppress the formation of multimers to obtain Bis-CNSL with a purity of over 99% by recrystallization from methanol. Bio-based epoxy polymer was prepared from cardanol derivatives, epoxy prepolymer and phenalkamine at room temperature without solvent. Chem-ical structures of cured epoxy polymers were analyzed by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The drying, physical, thermal, optical, and mechanical properties of the epoxy polymers were investigated in terms of the composi-tion of epoxy and amine compounds, molecular weight of the epoxy prepo-lymer, and the effect of post-curing process. The resultant epoxy polymers showed flexible nature, thermal stability (e.g., thermal decomposition tem-perature of 300 degrees C). Furthermore, the epoxy polymers possessed the anti-microbial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus The molecular weight of the epoxy prepolymer also strongly affected the drying property, suggesting that the drying time can be controlled by the molecu-lar weight of the prepolymer. Thermal treatment of the polymers as post-curing was effective approach to improve the hardness, thermal stability, and mechanical strength. Hence, this cardanol derivatives-based novel epoxy polymer can be expected as highly green functional epoxy polymers for coating, film and resin applications.

In this paper, different combinations of accelerators and inhibitors were used to cure marble adhesive based on an unsaturated polyester resin. N, N-dimethyl aniline (DMA, NL-63), N, N-dimethylparatoluidine (DEP, NL-65), and ethoxylates of p-toluidine (Pergaquick A150 p.m.) were used as amine accelerators. Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) was used as a medium temperature decomposition initiator. Hydroquinone and 1,4-naphthoquinone were used as polymerization inhibitors. To study the curing behavior, gel time, pseudo-adiabatic exothermic, and storage stability measurements have been used. The low-temperature initiator decomposition rate has also influenced the exothermic peak and cure rate at various accelerators. It is shown in this study that for N, N-dimethyl aniline (DMA, NL-63), N, N-dimethylparatoluidine (DEP, NL-65) and Ethoxylates of p-toluidine (Pergaquick A-150) promoters systems, with the increasing of pergaquick A-150 concentration, namely high reactive accelerator, causes the exothermic parameters sharply change. It might be due to the more reactive nature of pergaquick A-150 in comparison with other accelerators reactivity. Due to this study, using a dual system of inhibitor, the storage stability of marble adhesive was increased. Now we can say, a judicious choice of a dual inhibitor and a dual accelerator can prevent short time exothermic reactions with high storage stability, so a dual system of the inhibitor can be much more effective than a single one.

Purpose The increased human activities have significantly promoted the acidification of cultivated soils decreasing the soil water retention properties. This study investigated the improvement effect and mechanism of biochar on water retention properties of acidic soils. Materials and methods Biochar was mixed with acidified and molded soils in different amounts (0, 2, 5, 8, and 10%), and then soil hydrological and water infiltration characteristics were analyzed. Results and discussion The soil application of biochar, improved acidified soil capacity and porosity, and the effects were directly proportional to the applied amount of biochar. Compared to the control group, the application of 10%, biochar improved the average soil water content by 2.1-2.2 times and reduced the soil vertical infiltration rate by 41-43%. The soil vertical infiltration was 23-25% of that in the control group. Moreover, biochar-mediated improvement of soil aggregate agglomerates was found to be associated with the adsorption of soil microaggregates and the formation of water-stable macroaggregates. Conclusion This study found that applying biochar to acidified soils can relieve the problems of poor water retention with a clear improvement mechanism. Large-scale soil application of biochar preventing migration of soil ions can contribute to environmental protection and natural resources recycling.

Poly (arylene ether) was successfully synthesized from 2,7-dichloro-9H-thioxanthen-9-one10,10-dioxide and bisphenol-A by a nucleophilic substitution reaction. The resulting polymer had a weight average molecular weight of 11,000 and exhibited a glass transition temperature of 184 degrees C. Photorefractive composites consisting of the synthesized polymer as an electron transporting component and electro-optically active 4- N,N-diethylamino-beta-nitrostyrene (DEANST) were prepared. A PR device with a thickness of 100 mu m was fabricated by sandwiching the PR composite between two indium-tin-oxide covered glasses. The electric field dependences of the gain coefficient and diffraction efficiency were investigated by two-beam coupling and four-wave mixing experiments, respectively. Compared with the composite with polyacrylate containing more electro accepting thioxanthene unit, the composite base on the synthesized polymer exhibited a higher diffraction efficiency and a larger net gain because of a weaker absorption although a slower response was observed.

Novel block copolymers consisting of poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)/ poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) or P3HT / poly (ethylene glycol) (PEO) with a perylenediimide (PDI) unit at the junction between the segments were synthesized and utilized for donor materials in polymer solar cells. In the blend film of junction-modified block copolymer and [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), the PDI unit introduced at the junction of block copolymers assembled at the interface of donor/acceptor domains. A distinctive phase-separated morphology was created in the block copolymer blend film, which provided higher device performance compared with a conventional polymer blend system.

Hypothesis: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammation disease and still faces many therapeutic challenges, such as ineffective treatments, antibiotic resistance, and systematic toxicity. In order to improve the therapeutic efficacy of IBD, it is thus urgent to develop efficient, non-toxic and conveniently-administrated nanoagents to replace the currently used medicines. Casein phosphopeptide (CPP) has been found capable of chelating transition metal ions to suppress reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, showing the potential for the treatment of IBD. However, CPP easily suffers from hydrolysis and enzymatic degradation, which limits its further clinical application. Covalent assembly of CPP to form nanoparticles (GCPP NPs) may be an efficient way to enhance the CPP stability in physiological environment and finally improve its capability of in vivo antioxidation and IBD treatment. Experiments: We synthesized GCPP NPs through covalent assembly of Genipin and CPP, followed by characterizing their physicochemical properties. GCPP NPs were incubated under different physiological conditions including phosphate buffered saline, cell culture media, simulated gastrointestinal fluid for evaluation of stability. Cytotoxicity and antioxidation activities of GCPP NPs were tested in vitro under the 3T3 cell line using the ABTS and MTT assays, respectively. Finally, a DSS-induced mouse colitis model was established to assess specific accumulation and good therapeutic efficacy of GCPP NPs via an oral administration strategy. Findings: GCPP NPs are robust and stable to overcome easy degradation of CPP even under the harsh gastrointestinal environments, which are adapted for oral administration. As-prepared GCPP NPs show benign antioxidant activity to scavenge ROS. Meanwhile, nanoscale GCPP NPs can passively accumulate and maintain at inflamed sites. The body weight and colon length of DSS-induced colitis mice treated by GCPP NPs perform a rehabilitation trend. These results indicate that GCPP NPs, as peptide-based thera-peutic nanoagents, have great potential in the anti-inflammatory treatment of IBD by oral administration. (c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. 'therefore, in this study, biochar prepared by pyrolysis using peanut shells was used as a green amendment for acidified soil. Biochar with 0, 5 and 10 % biochar ratios were applied to the acidified soil, and the improvement and mechanism were investigated via experiments and software simulations. Analysis of the software simulation results revealed that biochar had the highest unit adsorption of K+ through physical adsorption at 820.38 mg/g. This was followed by PO43-, NO3-, and NH4+ as 270.51, 235.65 and 130.93 mg/g, respectively. These ions were controlled by both electrostatic and ion-exchange adsorption processes. During the improvement, the 10 % biochar ratio group performed the best with a 65.32 % reduction in the outlet volume, and the accumulated levels of nutrient ions in the leachate dropped by 48.40-68.28 % and increased by 437.80-913.87 % in the surface soil. Nutrient ion levels decreased gradually with the increase of soil depth, which agreed with the software simulation results. This study found that applying biochar to acidified soils can provide a solution to low nutrient utilization efficiency and unclear improvement mechanism of acidified soils, and provide a partial theoretical basis for the large-scale application of biochar. Future research on biochar for soil carbon sink and microbial expansion can be strengthened to contribute to environmental protection and multi-level utilization of energy.

Novel UV-curable bio-based polymers were prepared from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), a natural phenol compound, at room temperature via thiol-ene reaction. The physical, thermal, optical, and mechanical properties of UV-cured polymers and the structure-property relationship of these materials were inves-tigated. The resultant UV-cured polymers showed flexibility, transparency with high gloss, thermal resistance, and long-term stability as compared with other CNSL-based polymers. This is because the one step UV-click thiol-ene reaction from trans-parent CNSL-derived monomer proceeded effectively between S-H and C=C of allyl and alkyl sidechains, leading to a much more highly flexible crosslinked structure. This UV-curable bio-based polymer can be very advantageous in application of flexible coating and film.

The cellular affinity of micro-/nanoparticles is the precondition for cellular recognition, cellular uptake, and activation, which are essential for drug delivery and immune response. The present study stemmed from the observation that the effects of charge, size, and shape of solid particles on cell affinity are usually considered, but we seldom realize the essential role of softness, dynamic restructuring phenomenon, and complex interface interaction in cellular affinity. Here, we developed poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticle-stabilized Pickering emulsion (PNPE) that overcame the shortcomings of rigid forms and simulated the flexibility and fluidity of pathogens. A method was set up to test the affinity of PNPE to cell surfaces and elaborate on the subsequent internalization by immune cells. The affinity of PNPE to bio-mimetic extracellular vesicles (bEVs)-the replacement for bone marrow dendritic cells (BMDCs)-was determined using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), which allowed real-time monitoring of cell-emulsion adhesion. Subsequently, the PNPE was used to deliver the antigen (ovalbumin, OVA) and the uptake of the antigens by BMDCs was observed using confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). Representative results showed that the PNPE immediately decreased frequency (Delta F) when it encountered the bEVs, indicating rapid adhesion and high affinity of the PNPE to the BMDCs. PNPE showed significantly stronger binding to the cell membrane than PLGA microparticles (PMPs) and AddaVax adjuvant (denoted as surfactant-stabilized nano-emulsion [SSE]). Furthermore, owing to the enhanced cellular affinity to the immunocytes through dynamic curvature changes and lateral diffusions, antigen uptake was subsequently boosted compared with PMPs and SSE. This protocol provides insights for designing novel formulations with high cell affinity and efficient antigen internalization, providing a platform for the development of efficient vaccines.

For the improvement of the electron transporting property of poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene) (PFO) as a conventional polymer light-emitting diode material, well-defined triblock copolymers of PFO [number-average molecular weight (M (n)) approximate to 10 000] with different chain length polystyrene (PSt) (M (n) approximate to 1000, 2000, and 3000) were synthesized via a combined synthesis strategy of Suzuki-Miyaura reaction, atom transfer radical polymerization, and Steglich coupling reaction. Electron-only devices for homopolymer and triblock copolymers were fabricated by a solution process. It was demonstrated that triblock copolymer (M (n,PSt) approximate to 2000) after annealing exhibited the highest electron mobility. Thermal, optical, electrochemical and morphological properties were investigated severally and revealed that the microphase separated structure was formed in block copolymers (M (n,PSt) approximate to 2000, and 3000) after annealing, and the introduction of PSt raised the glass transition temperature (T (g)) and deepened the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level.

In this study, we synthesized and evaluated graft copolymers with polystyrene (PSt) as side chains on poly {[N,N '-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5 '-(2,2 ' -bithiophene)} [P(NDI2OD-T2)], which is a typical n-type semiconducting polymer applied to in organic photovoltaics due to its intense optical absorption for the visible light, and high electron affinity. A well-controlled structure was confirmed by H-1-NMR analysis. It was found that enhanced electron mobilities in graft copolymer films were observed compared with the homopolymer. In order to clarify the role of PSt chains and the origins of the enhanced mobility, UV-vis absorption, electrochemical, morphological and thermal characteristics, and crystalline nature were investigated. As the results, it is suggested that the improved mobilities were attributed to the enhanced growth of pi-pi stacks, and increased crystallinity induced by PSt graft chains.

A well-controlled anionic polymerization of 1,3-cyclohexadiene (1,3-CHD) with the alkyllithium (RLi)/ether system has been achieved for the first time. The type of ether was the predominant factor affecting the polymerization results. Optimization of the nucleophilicity and solubility of the initiator (system) and propagating species was also important for the polymerization reaction. An initiator system of sec-butyllithium (s-BuLi)/cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) in toluene was found to be very effective for forming well-controlled polymer chains of poly(1,3-CHD), and living anionic polymerization was achieved. In this system, the polymer chains mainly consisted of 1,4-cyclohexadiene (1,4-CHD) units. It was confirmed that the s-BuLi/CPME system was a new example of living anionic polymerization of 1,3-CHD.

In order to mimic hierarchical nanostructures in nature, particles of polymer blends consisting of poly(4-butyltriphenylamine) (PBTPA), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and PBTPA-block-PMMA were fabricated by a solvent evaporation method. Effects of the molecular weight and the chemical composition of PBTPA-b-PMMA, molecular weights of homopolymers, and the composition of the blend on the morphology were investigated. The polymer blend particle consisting of PBTPA and PMMA homopolymers exhibited thermodynamically favored core-shell structure, in which more hydrophilic PMMA-shell surrounded PBTPA-core. The addition of 10 wt% of PBTPA-b-PMMA caused the morphological transition from core-shell to Janus or inversed core-shell, in which PBTPA-shell surrounded PMMA-core, depending on the molecular weight of PBTPA segment in PBTPA-b-PMMA. When the molecular weight of PMMA segment was higher than that of PMMA homopolymer, watermelon-like particles in which small PBTPA domain less than 80 nm dispersed in the PMMA domain surrounded by PBTPA shell were observed. As the ratio of PBTPA-b-PMMA increased, the interface of the macrophase separation became obscure. At 50 wt% of the PBTPA-b-PMMA, only microphase separation was observed. The measurement of interfacial tension by pendant drop method demonstrated that PBTPA-b-PMMA lower the interfacial tension between PBTPA and the aqueous phase to the value similar to that of PMMA with the aqueous phase. Poly[9,9-bis(2,4-octanecliony1)-9',9'-di-n-octyl[2,2'-bi-9H-fluorene]-7,7'-diyl] (PFOA) was prepared with a beta-diketone structure incorporated in the side chain and the optimal octyl length remained. Compared with poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene) (PFO) with a similar degree of polymerization, we found that the introduction of beta-diketone brought about superior fluorescent, electrochemical and electron transporting properties, which suggested improved color stability and electron mobility.

Oxidative stress can lead to permanent and irreversible damage to cellular components and even cause cancer and other diseases. Therefore, the development of antioxidative reagents is an important strategy to alleviate chronic diseases and maintain the redox balance in cells. Small-molecule bioactive compounds have exhibited huge therapeutic potential as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Myricetin (Myr), a well-known natural flavonoid, has drawn wide attention because of its high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer efficacy. Especially regarding antioxidation, Myr is capable of not only chelating intracellular transition metal ions for removing reactive oxygen species, but also of activating antioxidant enzymes and related signal pathways and, thus, of sustainably scavenging radicals. However, Myr is poorly soluble in water, which limits its bioavailability for biomedical applications, and even its clinical therapeutic potential. The antioxidant peptide glutathione (GSH) plays a role as antioxidant in cells and possesses good hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. However, it is easily metabolized by enzymes. To take advantages of their antioxidation activity and to overcome the abovementioned limitations, GSH, Zn2+, and Myr were selected to co-assemble into Myr-Zn2+-GSH nanoparticles or nanoarchitectonics. This study offers a new design to harness stable, sustainable antioxidant nanoparticles with high loading capacity, high bioavailability, and good biocompatibility as antioxidants.

We reported that supercritical (sc) annealing of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), and its block copolymers with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and polystyrene (PSt) brought about improvements in the crystal structure and hole mobility, determined by the space charge limited current (SCLC) measurement. P3HT-b-PEO showed the largest increase in mobility. From the XRD profile, it was found that the treatment with scCO(2) increased the crystallite size and crystallinity. UV-vis spectra showed that the effective conjugation length in the scCO(2) treated films was increased, compared to the as-spun samples, suggesting that CO2 molecules are incorporated into domains of the second block domains and P3HT amorphous region, and assist to alter the characteristics of the crystalline region. Then, it was considered that the change in the crystalline structure and the improvement of P3HT chains packing led to enhanced mobility. Since PEO is known to have a higher affinity for CO2, the increase of mobility was specifically intensive.

The present study was done to investigate the effect of coating thickness, the applied potential, immersion time in sodium chloride solution, concentration, temperature, and pH of sodium chloride solution on cathodic disbonding of epoxy -polyamide coating. Analysis of the results obtained regarding the effect of thickness and immersion time on cathodic disbonding of coating showed that mechanism of penetration of water, oxygen, and sodium cations into coating is through cavity. Also, an inverse linear relationship was observed between the applied potential and cathodic disbonding radius of coating. While, increasing concentration of sodium chloride solution in a range of 3.5-5% increased disbonding level of coating, and increasing concentration from 7 to 9% decreased disbonding level. Increasing temperature and pH of sodium chloride solution also elevated cathodic disbonding rate of epoxy- polyamide coating.

Triphenylamine derivates have been utilized as building blocks in hole-transporting materials. Herein, we describe the synthesis of three octyl-derived conjugated triphenylamine macrocycles with different sizes, and a 4-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-substituted cyclic triphenylamine hexamer using a palladium-catalyzed C-N coupling reaction. These conjugated triphenylamine macrocycles not only have interesting structures, but also are capable of complexing with C-60, C-70 and PC61BM. Their binding stoichiometries with fullerenes were all determined to be 1 : 1 by an emission titration method. The association constants of these complexes were measured to be in the range of 0.115-1.53 x 10(5) M-1 depending on the cavity size of the triphenylamine macrocycles and the volume of the fullerenes. The space-charge-limited current properties of the complexes were further investigated using the fabricated ITO/PEDOT:PSS/active layer/Au devices.

Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) are emerging prebiotic that may improve structural features of biopolymer blends. The investigation around the conformation of XOS into the matrix of alginate and gelatin clarifies the potential applications of this formulation in the food industry as texture modifiers or encapsulation systems. Structural properties verified by flow behavior, SEM, XRD, and FT-IR demonstrated that the add up to 3% XOS into the alginate-gelatin blend formed a cohesive matrix, with smaller pores and crystalline structure, confirming the potential of xylooligosaccharides hydrogels for the development of functional and synbiotic foods.

Here, we reported particles with approximately 80-mu m diameter with phase-separated morphology of ternary polymer blends containing poly(4-butyltriphenylamine) (PBTPA), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and PBTPA-b-PMMA fabricated via a microfluidic emulsification technique with a Y-shaped microreactor followed by a solvent evaporation. Addition of block copolymer changed the macroscopic structure from core-shell to Janus and more complicated sea-island type with the increase of the block copolymer content. The Janus structure with a PMMA hemisphere containing small PBTPA domain was observed at 10 wt% of the block copolymer. Meanwhile, the rapid evaporation changed the morphology macroscopically from the Janus to the undeveloped one where PMMA-rich phase mainly located at center sandwiched with outside PBTPA phases, suggesting that morphologies are governed by the kinetical factors together with the conventionally accepted thermodynamic ones. After the solvent annealing with toluene, distinct and enlarged PMMA phase appeared radiately, of which size gradiently decreased from the surface to the center (200-500 nm) in each particle.

Currently, the influences of free terminal groups (hydroxyl, carboxyl and ester) of PLGA on encapsulating active pharmaceutical ingredient are relatively ambiguous even though PLGA types were defined as critical quality attributes in vast majority of design of experiment process. In this study, emulsion method combined with premix membrane emulsification technique has been used to encapsulate ropivacaine (RVC), a small molecule local anesthetic in clinical. Based on the narrow particle size distribution, the influences and mechanisms of the terminal groups on properties of ropivacaine loaded microspheres have been investigated in detail. It was found that microspheres prepared by PLGA with hydroxyl or ester groups exhibited lower encapsulation efficiency but faster in vitro release rate than that of carboxyl groups. In the meanwhile, on microcosmic level analysis by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, atomic force microscope and confocal laser scanning microscopy, we attributed this distinction to the specific interaction between ropivacaine and different terminal groups. Subsequently, the reaction activation centers were verified by density functional simulation calculation and frontier molecular orbital theory at molecular level. Additionally, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic research of infiltration anesthesia model were performed to compare sustained release ability, duration and intensity of the anesthetic effect in vivo. Finally, potential safety and toxicity were evaluated by the biochemical analysis. This study not only provides a novel mechanism of drug encapsulation process but also potential flexible selections in terms of various anesthesia indications in clinical.

Hierarchically unique morphologies were observed inside microspheres with a diameter of 70-80 mu m fabricated with the combination of a microfluidic emulsification and a solvent-evaporation method, which were based on binary polymer blends consisting of poly(styrene) (PS) / poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly [4-(N,N-diphenylamino)styrene] (PDAS) / PMMA. The phase separated structure in composites was dependent on type of hydrophobic polymer, the molecular weight of polymers, and the evaporation rate. The particles prepared from high-molecular weight components exhibited macroscopically phase separated structure (incomplete core-shell). In addition, PS / PMMA composite showed the hierarchical microscopic phase separated structure, spherical PMMA domains dispersed in the PS-rich core in the macroscopic core-shell structure. Low molecular PS / PMMA composite formed macroscopically homogeneous, but microscopically bi-continuous phase separated structure. Low molecular PDAS / PMMA composite also afforded the hierarchical structure, where the macroscopical core-shell structure (pseudo core-shell) existed, and the shell contained dispersed micron-sized PDAS domain in PMMA phase, and the core exhibited the bi-continuous structure comprised both components. This hierarchical structure is considered to be formed due to the kinetical limitation, and this was more simplified and thermodynamically more stable structure (sea-island) by lowering the evaporation rate. It is noteworthy that the uniform sized microspheres with hierarchical structure were fabricated only from homopolymer blends without the assist of block or graft copolymer.

Soluble comb-shaped polyvinylthiophenes with well-controlled and defined multifunctional side chains were synthesized for the first time. Poly(5-vinyl-2,2'-bithiophene) (PVBT) as a main chain was obtained successfully by a thoughtfully designed anionic polymerization of 5-vinyl-2,2'-bithiophene. Bromination and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of PVBT gave the desired multifunctional side chains in almost quantitative yield. The obtained polymers could be quickly and easily purified by reprecipitation. The insertion of a repelling unit in the side chain prevented strong pi-pi interactions between adjacent side chains and dramatically improved the solubility of the comb-shaped polyvinylthiophenes. The optical properties of these polymers were strongly influenced by the intermolecular interactions of adjacent side chains. These comb-shaped polyvinylthiophenes possessed good solubility in common organic solvents, adjustable optical (or electrical) properties, and the ability to form high-quality thin films.

A poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) aerogel was fabricated simply by freeze-drying as a thermoelectric (TE) material with low thermal conductivity. Conventional methods used to enhance the electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS, such as the addition of a secondary dopant to the dispersion and dipping in a secondary dopant, caused shrinkage and a reduction of the advantageous low thermal conductivity in the case of aerogel. Therefore, we have applied secondary doping in supercritical CO2 (ScCO2) atmosphere to maintain the porous structure of the aerogel so that a temperature gradient can be maintained. The structure and TE performance of PEDOT:PSS aemgels treated with secondary doping by the dipping and ScCO2 methods were investigated. The ScCO2 method caused little shrinkage of PEDOT:PSS aerogel with conductivity improvement by four orders of magnitude. The secondary doping with ScCO2 could be promising method for PEDOT-based TE devices with porous structure.

The original synthetic strategy for a new type of poly(arylene vinylene) (PAV) is presented, where the C=C-bond-forming coupling of bis(alkoxycarbonyldiazomethyl)aromatic compounds is utilized as propagation. The strategy is unique in that the resulting PAVs have an alkoxycarbonyl group as an electron-withdrawing substituent on each vinylene carbon atom in the polymer main chain. Among the transition-metal catalysts examined in this study, RuCl(cod)Cp* (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) is the most efficient, affording PAVs from a series of bis(alkoxycarbonyldiazomethyl)aromatic compounds with a high trans-C=C-forming selectivity of up to 90%. A PAV sample with a fluorenylene framework as an arylene moiety prepared by the Ru catalyst exhibited a hole mobility of 4 x 10(-6 )cm(2) V-1 s(-1).

We here report the facile fabrication of inverse core-shell and Janus structured particles consisting of poly(4-butyltriphenylamine) (PBTPA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) via a solvent evaporation from solution droplets of a polymer blend dispersed in an aqueous phase. Janus structured composite particles in which the PBTPA domain was partially coated by the PMMA domain were obtained using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a suspension stabilizer. On the other hand, when sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was added as a surfactant together with PVA, inverse core-shell particles in which the PMMA core was covered by the PBTPA shell were formed as well as Janus particles. TEM observation showed that the PMMA core was located at the center of the sphere and PBTPA layer has uniform thickness in inverse core-shell particles. The increase of the composition of PBTPA or the concentration of SDS increased the ratio of the inverse core-shell particles to the Janus ones.

Simple synthesis of nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) by impregnation method was investigated. Titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) was used as the precursor and starch as the impregnations matrix. TiO2 nanoparticles of 100 nm in size were synthesized by varying the conditions. Crystallization and the growth of the particles were accelerated with increasing calcination temperature and time. The X-ray diffraction study shows that the product has anatase crystal structure at calcination temperatures below 600 degrees C. Anatase phase and rutile phase coexisted at 700 degrees C. At temperatures above 700 degrees C, the intensity of the anatase crystal phase peaks decreased and a peak of the new rutile crystal phase appeared at 2 theta of 27.42(110), 36.11(101), 41.28(111) and 55.06(220). In more than 800 degrees C of temperature, rutile phase only existence.

Polymeric blend particles consisting of poly(4-butyl triphenylamine) (PBTPA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with various phase separated morphologies including core-shell, Janus, dumbbell and confetti-like structures were prepared by a solvent evaporation method in which a solvent is evaporated from polymer solution droplets dispersed in an aqueous medium. The effects of the preparation conditions including solvent, molecular weight, content of polymers and evaporation rate on the morphology were investigated hi detail. The morphology of the particles prepared from toluene solution changed from core-shell to Janus with the increase of the molecular weight of the PMMA. The particles prepared from chloroform solution exhibited dumbbell-like structure independent of the molecular weight. It was found that poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a suspension stabilizer in aqueous medium reduced the interfacial tension between the chloroform solution and the aqueous phase to less than 5 mN m(-1). Snowman-like particle as the series of dumbbell-like structure was obtained by decreasing the weight ratio of the PBTPA. Rapid evaporation of chloroform induced the formation of confetti-like structure with the PMMA core surrounded by the PBTPA particles of less than 1 mu m in diameter.

Ropivacaine loaded microspheres offer an attractive alternative for prolonging the duration of local anesthetics for the pain management. However, traditional microcapsulation methods could not provide microspheres with desired drug loading efficiency and a narrow size distribution, leading to poor patient compliance as well as preparation repeatability. In this study, we proposed to combine O/W emulsion method with novel premix membrane emulsification technique. After the optimization of fabrication procedure, ropivacaine loaded microspheres with narrow size distribution (span 0.469), high drug loading efficiency (49%) and an ideal constant release behavior have been obtained. Especially, it was found that solidification process affected the internal structure of microspheres and the physical state of encapsulated ropivacaine. Furthermore, it was interested that lower polymer molecular weight resulted in higher encapsulation efficiency, which was not consistent with reported results. It was found that this was ascribed to the interaction of PLGA-ropivacaine. All these aspects had considerable influences on the characteristics of microspheres. In addition, the cytotoxicity on different cell lines (SHSY5Y and HaCaT cells) was detected qualitatively and quantitatively. It showed that ropivacaine loaded microspheres did reduce the Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cytotoxicity prominently compared to free ropivacaine, which could be attributed to the sustained and steady drug release behavior. This study provided some pioneering ideas for encapsulating small molecule drug with poor solubility. The optimized microspheres could be chosen as an ideal candidate for the ropivacaine sustained release with its better drug adherence, lower toxicity of drug burst release and best therapeutic effect.

Antistatic fibers or conductive fibers can be obtained from formation of a metal conductive layer, for example silver, on the surface of polymeric fibers through a redox reaction. However, in the process of fabricating silver-polymer conductive fibers, the binding force between silver and the polymeric fiber matrix is too weak and the poor weather resistance greatly affects the performance of the conductive fibers. This work aims to synthesize composite conductive layers of polyaniline (PANi)-silver coated on polyester fibers to prepare conductive polymeric fibers, in order to improve the combining ability between the conductive layers and the fiber matrix. The morphology, thermostability, mechanical properties, washing resistance and corrosion resistance of the resultant fibers obtained from different synthesis conditions were characterized. Batch experimental results showed that the concentration of the reagent and the reaction time could affect the resistance of the PANi-silver coated conductive fibers. The results also demonstrated that the PANi-silver composite conductive fibers have better properties than those of the silver-polymer conductive fibers.

A block copolymer consisting of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and electrically inert poly(styrene) (PSt) containing perylene diimide (PDI) at the junction (P3HT-PDI-PSt) was designed for photovoltaic applications and synthesized via Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of bromo terminated P3HT and the boronic ester with PSt containing the PDI unit. From grazing incidence wide angle X-ray diffraction analysis for the annealed thin films, it is found that incorporation of PDI hinders the growth of alkyl stacking in the (100) direction of the phase separated P3HT domain. Investigation of space-charge limited current characteristics in the hole-only devices reveals that higher SCLC mobility was observed in the P3HT-PDI-PSt than in the P3HT precursor in spite of the lower crystallinity.

Fast-drying traffic marking paint comprising a solvent-borne resin, a filler, a pigment and a solvent that is especially suitable for colder ambient (temperatures near freezing) applications, where waterborne traffic paint cannot be used. Acrylic resins based on methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, and styrene were synthesized in different solvents using organic peroxide initiators such as peroxyester, peroxyketal, dialkylperoxide and azo. After polymerization, the molecular weight (M-w), polydispersity index = PDI (M-w/M-n), viscosity, total residual monomer and APHA color were evaluated and results of organic peroxide initiators (t-butyl and t-amyl derivatives) were compared with the azo initiator. The M-w, PDI, viscosity, mass conversation and APHA color of resins with t-amyl derivatives of organic peroxide initiators are very proper.

Here, we report the morphological transition of a phase-separated structure from core-shell to Janus morphology in droplets consisting of a poly(4-butyltriphenylamine) (PBTPA)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blend solution, induced by UV light irradiation. We obtained a phase-separated structure formed by the evaporation of the solvent from polymer solution droplets dispersed in an aqueous solution containing a surfactant. The rate of transition decreased with increasing polymer concentration and diameter of the droplet. It was also found that the transition was caused by UV light with a wavelength of 365 nm, which is mainly absorbed by PBTPA, indicating that this phenomenon is triggered by PBTPA. When the droplet was heated to 75 degrees C, no transition was observed.

Polyester fibers are used in various fields, due to their excellent mechanical and chemical stability. However, the lack of conductivity limits their application potential. In order to prepare conductive polyester fibers, silver is one of the most widely used materials to coat the surface of the fibers. This work aimed to prepare silver-coated polyester fibers by a continuous two-step method, which combined the operations of continuous electroless plating and electroplating. Meanwhile, we designed specialized equipment for the continuous plating of silver on the polyester fibers under a dynamic condition. The mechanical property, washability, electrical resistivity, and electrical conductivity of the resultant conductive polyester fibers obtained from different silver-plating conditions were also characterized. The results demonstrated that the conductive fibers prepared by continuous two-step silver plating equipment, had good electrical conductivity with better mechanical properties and washability.

Two or three orders of higher magnitude out-of-plane hole mobilities are observed in the films of poly(3-hexylthiophene)-b-poly(styrene) (P3HT-b-PSt) compared with those of P3HT fabricated with the same conditions in a diode geometry. From grazing incidence wide angle X-ray diffraction analysis, it is found that there is a trend that PSt domains hinder the growth of alkyl stacking, and promote that of the - stacking. Differential scanning calorimetry thermogram of P3HT-b-PSt exhibits distinct double endothermic peaks, and double glass transitions. The larger change of heat capacity in glass transition at higher temperature indicates that the larger content of rigid amorphous region exists compared with P3HT. It is considered that the higher content of rigid amorphous domain (short-range ordered packing) interconnects the crystallites (long-range ordered packing) leading to the extraordinary higher mobility in P3HT-b-PSt film.

The generation of a flexible printed circuit board on polymer fabrics has been a challenge over the last decade. In this work, a copper pattern was obtained on a soft substrate of filter paper/polyacrylonitrile (FP/PAN) film, where the filter paper was commercially available. The pattern of Ag particles was first produced on an Ag+-doped FP/PAN composite film, followed by electroless plating of copper using the metal silver particles as seeds. The in situ reduction of silver particles and the formation of the silver agglomeration pattern were induced by laser irradiation technology on the FP/PAN/AgNO3 composite film. A variety of characterizations indicated that the resultant copper deposition was uniform, with good conductivity properties.

Multicomponent polymer particles with specific morphology are promising materials exhibiting novel functionality which cannot be obtained with single-component polymer particles. Particularly, the preparation of such kinds of polymer particles involving electrically or optically active conjugated polymers with uniform size is a challenging subject due to their intense demands. Here, microspheres of binary polymer blend consisting of poly(4-butyltriphenylamine) (PBTPA)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) (1:1 in weight) were produced via a microfluidic emulsification with a Y-shaped microreactor, and a subsequent solvent evaporation method. The flow rate of the dispersed phase (polymer solution) was fixed to 7 mu L/min, and 140 or 700 mu L/min of the flow rate of the continuous phase (aqueous 0.6 wt % of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution) was utilized to produce the dispersion with different diameter. The concentration of dispersed phase was adjusted to 0.1 or 1.0 w/v%. Core-shell, Janus and dumbbell type microspheres were obtained dependent on the flow rate of continuous phase. Incomplete core-shell type microspheres were produced for the blend involving low molecular weight PMMA. Complex Janus and core-shell type microspheres were fabricated by the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to continuous phase. It is found that final morphologies are strongly dependent on the initial conditions of dispersion including the particle size suggesting that the morphologies are governed by the kinetical factors together with the conventionally accepted thermodynamic ones.

In this study, Fe-doped TiO2/SiO2 (Fe@TS) nanofibrous membranes with molecular imprinted modification, were fabricated by a combination of sol-gel process, electrospinning, calcination and liquid phase deposition techniques. The precursor sol was prepared from one-pot condensation of poly (vinylpyrrolidone), ferric chloride hexahydrate, tetraethyl orthosilicate and titanium n-butoxide in the mixture solvents of N,N-dimethylformamide and ethyl alcohol. Fibrous membrane wasthen fabricated by electrospinning, followed by calcination to form the Fe@TS composite. The physicochemical properties of Fe@TS were characterized. Thereafter, 4-nitrophenol (4NP) was used as the template to deposit onto nanofibrous Fe@TS membranes, with a thin layer of molecular imprinted polymer in liquid phase. The photodegradation capabilities of 4NP and methyl orange were examined in both single and binary systems. The results demonstrated that molecular imprinted Fe@TS membranes exhibited excellent selectivity for photodegradation of 4NP. It is widely recognized that fullerene derivatives show several advantages as n-type materials in photovoltaic applications. However, conventional [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) exhibits weak absorption in the visible region, and poor morphological stability, due to the facile aggregation. For further improvement of the device performance and durability, utilization of n-type polymeric materials instead of PCBM is considered to be a good way to solve the problems. In this study, we fabricated completely polymer-based solar cells utilizing p-and n-type block copolymers consisting of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly{[N, N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl) Knaphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)} [P(NDI2OD-T2)], respectively, containing common polystyrene (PSt) inert blocks, which decreased the size of phase separated structures. Electron mobility in synthesized P(NDI2OD-T2)-b-PSt film enhanced by a factor of 8 compared with homopolymer. The root mean square roughness of the blend film of two block copolymers (12.2 nm) was decreased, compared with that of the simple homopolymers blend (18.8 nm). From the current density-voltage characteristics, it was confirmed that the introduction of PSt into both P3HT and P(NDI2OD-T2) improves short-circuit current density (1.16 to 1.73 mA cm(-2)) and power-conversion efficiency (0.24% to 0.32%). Better performance is probably due to the uniformity of the phase separation, and the enhancement of charge mobility.

In this study, nanofibrous polypyrrole-coated TiO2/SiO2 (PPy@TS) membranes were fabricated by a combination of sol-gel process, electrospinning, calcination, and in situ polymerization. Samples from the electrospinning, calcination, and in situ polymerization steps were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry. The in situ polymerization of PPy is aimed to enhance the overall photocatalytic capability of TiO2 in the TiO2/SiO2 composite fibers. Pseudo photorefractive effect was observed in composites based on polyacrylate containing 9-oxo-9H-thioxanthene-10,10-dioxide (TH) moiety doped with 4-(N,N-diethylamino)-beta-nitrostyrene (DEANST), and in copolymers with both moieties without an external electric field. Lowering glass transition temperature of the composites by the addition of a low molecular weight plasticizer decreased the gain coefficients, and afforded unstable index grating. Due to the fact that the addition of stronger electron donating carbazole derivative also made the gain coefficient lower, charge transfer interaction between TH and DEANST plays an important role to establish the grating. Compared with the composite systems, the corresponding copolymers required the longer time to reach the saturated gain coefficient, indicating that the mass transfer of the electro-optically active moiety was essential to create the phase-shifted index grating with the interference pattern.

Durability and wear properties of traffic marking paints are one of the most important challenges in traffic management. This provides high-value cost-benefit, crowd reducing, improving journey times and decreasing environmental targets which are made by standing or slow-moving traffic. Because of the volume of traffic passing, climatic conditions, type of road surface, and drivers' behavior, a traffic marking paint gradually loses its basic properties such as durability and night visibility (R-L) that may potentially lead to accidents because of a loss of cognitive perception for drivers. Therefore, an effective wear resistance traffic marking paint is desirable to reduce wear, extending the lifetime and durability of paints. Analyzing this effect via microgranules, nanoclay application is the aim of this study. Clay/acrylic resin nanocomposite is synthesized using Cloisite((R)) 30B with different percentages, finally, production of traffic marking paint nanocomposites with this nanocomposite acrylic resins can offer the promising prospect for these aims.

Block copolymer consisting of polyfluorene and polytriarylamine with benzothiadiazole moiety at the junction is prepared in order to obtain an orange emitting polymer via Suzuki-Miyaura followed by Buchwald-Hartwig coupling reactions. Electroluminescent device fabricated with resulting block copolymer exhibit only orange emission, although slight blue emission is observed in the fluorescent spectrum for the thin film, indicating that benzothiadiazole part plays a role of an effective trap site. Devices based on polyfluorene homopolymer doped with block copolymer (10 wt %) or an orange emitting model compound at the corresponding content of benzotiadiazole unit are also fabricated. The device with the model compound exhibits orange emission with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate of (0.58, 0.42), whereas that with block copolymer pale orange with the coordinate of (0.44, 0.38). This fact is probably due to the preferential distribution of block copolymer at the vicinity of anode via hydrophilic interaction of trioxyethylene side chains with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate). A novel cyclic emitter composed of tetraphenylsilane and tetraphenylethene backbone was successfully synthesized through a convenient homocoupling procedure. The optical and thermal properties of the compound were revealed. Intriguingly, the compound showed different color emissions in solid film, THF solution, and THF/water mixtures. It is assumed that the violet emission was from an isolated component of the emitter, whereas the sky blue and the green emissions were from a crystalline state, and an amorphous state, respectively. The red-shifted emissions were caused by the change of nature of the excitonic coupling.

To evaluate the effect of chromophore location on electroluminescent performance, three types of block copolymers consisting of polyfluorene and polytriarylamine with benzothiadiazole (BT) moieties were synthesized and characterized. A BT unit was incorporated at the junction between blocks (BP 1) in the polytriarylamine block (BP 2) or in the polyfluorene block ( BP 3). An electroluminescent device based on BP 1 exhibited the best performance. This result is reasonably explained by considering the difference in recombination probability in the phase-separated active layers. Different chemical structures of emitting sites afford different emission wavelengths, which are dependent on the electron-donating nature of substituents on the BT rings.

A new macrocyclic AIE emitter composed of triarylamine backbone was successfully synthesized through convenient homocoupling procedure and easily purified by silica gel column chromatography, and recrystallization. The optical and electrochemical properties of the compound have been investigated. Intriguingly, the compound shows dual emission both 423 nm and 505 nm. This result implied that the violet emission was originated from an isolated component of the emitter, whereas the yellowish green emission simultaneously exhibited AIE nature. The compound exhibits enough thermal stability and high glass transition temperature to be applied for organic devices. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) is a non-food natural polyphenol that is a renewable resource. In the present work, we prepared cardanol- and CNSL-based epoxy polymers by photopolymerization using various cationic photoinitiators and photosensitizers. Epoxy prepolymers were used as a precursor and prepared by thermal treatment of epoxy cardanol and epoxy CNSL according to previous work. Photopolymerization of these prepolymers with bis (4-tert-butylphenyl) iodonium hexafluorophosphate (BIP) proceeded more quickly than that of other photoinitiators. We obtained UV-cured epoxy prepolymers with high gel content by 20 seconds of UV irradiation. These UV-cured CNSL prepolymers were thermally stable up to 250-300 degrees C, indicating that these can be used as heat-resistant materials. The photopolymerization of epoxy prepolymers was analysed by NMR and FT-IR and characterized by drying properties, hardness, thermal and mechanical properties.

Novel solvent-free bio-based hybrid coating and resin were prepared at room temperature from natural polyphenol compounds, natural lacquer (i.e., urushiol), and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). The bio-based hybrids were fabricated by sol-gel and crosslink reactions among organic silane, urushiol, and CNSL-based epoxy compounds. The drying, hardness, and physical properties of the bio-based hybrids were investigated to determine the effective preparation condition. Prepolymerziation of epoxy cardanol and epoxy CNSL improved the molecular weight, drying, and hardness properties of the hybrids. The drying time until harden dry (HD) of the hybrids took about 1.3-6.0 hours at room temperature, which is faster than that of the hybrids prepared with commercial bisphenol A-type epoxy (BPAE). The hardness of the hybrids was greater than that of the hybrids prepared with BPAE. Therefore, the epoxy CNSL prepolymers can be effective to prepare the bio-based coating and resin materials compared with the BPAE-based hybrids.

The cyclic pentamer of 4-butyltriphenylamine (CBTPA [5]) was prepared by the Pd-catalyzed C-N coupling reaction followed by purification with a combination of chromatographic techniques. Due to the rigid cyclic structure, the glass-transition temperature of CBTPA [5] was 215 degrees C. The space-charge-limited current mobility in its amorphous film was determined to be 1.3 x 10(-)4 cm(2)V(-1) s(-1) which was higher than that of poly(4-butyltriphenylamine) (PBTPA) by a factor of 100. The higher mobility is ascribed to the higher purity of CBTPA [5], monodispersed nature, and homogeneous electron distribution of the highest occupied molecular orbital.

A simple and practical strategy has been developed for preparing polyaniline(PAND-doped TiO2/poly(1-lactide) (P@TiP-C) fibers by a combination of coaxial-electrospinning and in -situ polymerization. The TiO2/PLLA composite fibers with TiO2 located on the surface were fabricated by coaxial-electrospinning, with PLLA as the core phase and a dispersion of TiO2 particles, a well-known photocatalyst, in the sheath phase. The aniline monomers were also located in the core phase and in-situ polymerized by ammonium persulfate (APS) after electrospinning. SEM images show that TiO2 particles were located on the surface of PLLA fibers. Photocatalytic degradation tests show that the P@TiP-C fibers exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of methyl orange under visible light, likely due to the synergistic effect of PANi and TiO2.

In order to develop thermally stable hole transporting polymers, the N-arylcarbozole moiety, which was connected at 3,9-positions, was incorporated into 4-butyltriphenylamine based polymers via Pd-catalyzed C-N coupling polymerization. The synthesized copolymers have number average molecular weights in the range from 7.3 to 12 kg/mol, and are soluble in chloroform and chlorobenzene. UV-vis spectra revealed that the introduction of carbazole moiety leads to the blue-shift of wavelength at the absorption maximum, and thus to the extension of the band gap. Other optical and electrochemical properties were evaluated by fluorescent spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. From DSC measurements, it is found that the glass transition temperatures of copolymers are higher than that of the homopolymer consisting of 4-butyltriphenylamine units. The copolymer with 70 mol% of carbazole units shows a glass transition at 267 degrees C. Investigation of space-charge limited current characteristics in the hole-only devices reveals that the introduction of carbozole unit improves the hole mobility, and the above-mentioned copolymer shows a hole mobility of 1.5 X 10(-5)cm(2)V(-1)s(-1).
