Buckling and Drying Kinetics of Particle-Stabilized Water Droplets Fully or Partially Immersed in an Oil LayerAbe, Kohei; Inasawa, Susumu

AMER CHEMICAL SOC
We have investigated the effect of buckling of particle-stabilized water droplets on the drying kinetics. Particle-stabilized water droplets in an oil phase were prepared and the shrinking modes of the droplets during drying were controlled by the wettability of the particles. We obtained water droplets with and without buckling and used them in drying experiments. The drying times were comparable when the droplets were fully immersed in a thick oil layer. However, when the thickness of the oil layer was smaller than the droplet diameter, the buckled droplets showed faster drying. Observation of the reflection images around the droplets suggested that the buckled droplets preferentially shrank in the height direction, while the droplets without buckling isotropically shrank. Mathematical models that assumed diffusion of dissolved water molecules in the oil layer showed good agreement with the experimental data. The effective water-oil interfacial area was constant in the buckled droplets, whereas it shrank in the droplets without buckling. This would be a reason for the faster drying of the partially immersed buckled droplets. Particulate shells on liquid droplets could be used to enhance droplet drying.

ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY
We investigated the kinetics of water imbibition in polydisperse foams. We used a Hele-Shaw cell, and horizontal imbibition was observed for a timescale of up to 10(3) s in which the gravity effect was negligible. While several papers have reported kinetics for imbibition in foams, imbibition kinetics in polydisperse foams and its variations in longer timescales are not well understood. The tip position of imbibition was proportional to the square root of time in the initial stage of imbibition, but it showed plateauing in the late stage of imbibition. We evaluated the proportional constant A in the initial stage of imbibition as a kinetic constant for the time-dependent increase in the tip position, which showed a clear dependency on the initial and final water volume fractions in the foams. Conversely, the mean initial radius of the curvature and the channel length in the Plateau borders did not show any clear correlations with A, although both valuables are frequently used in modeling for liquid imbibition in foams. On the basis of the t(1/2) dependence, the correlation of A with the water volume fraction and the increase in the water volume fraction during imbibition, we proposed a simple equation to describe the tip position over the entire period of imbibition. We used them to scale all of the experimental data, which showed good agreement with the theoretical line. This clearly showed that the water volume fraction in the foams during imbibition was the key factor to quantitatively describe the rate of water imbibition. Features in the kinetics of imbibition were discussed.

Evaporation kinetics of continuous water and dispersed oil dropletsHasegawa, Katsuyuki; Inasawa, Susumu
SOFT MATTER
ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY
Drying of volatile oil droplets immersed in a continuous water phase was observed and analysed. Drying sample solutions were sandwiched between two glass plates and the water and oil phases were observed by confocal microscopy. In the initial stage of drying, evaporation of water was dominant and drying of the oil droplets was negligible. However, the rate of water evaporation decreased when the oil droplets were compressed. Comparison of experimental data with a diffusion model of water vapour showed that the decline in drying rates occurred earlier in the experiment than in the theoretical prediction. This implies that compression and narrowing of water paths caused the decline in the rate of water evaporation. After most water had evaporated, evaporation of the oil droplets occurred. The oil droplets did not shrink isotropically and the air-liquid interface invaded into the drying oil droplets. Cross-sectional observation byz-scanning revealed direct exposure of the oil droplets and they were pinned by the residual water phase. The water network between the oil droplets collapsed after the oil droplets had evaporated. The correlation between changes in structures and drying kinetics in both liquid phases was discussed.

Formation of boron-doped silicon wires and control of dopant concentration using zinc, SiCl4 and BCl3Taniguchi, Ryunosuke; Inasawa, Susumu

ELSEVIER
We synthesized boron-doped silicon wires (whiskers) in a gas phase reduction reaction of SiCl4 with zinc vapor. BCl3 was introduced into the reactor as a boron source, and we varied the concentration ratio of B/Si in the gas phase. The formed wires had an electrical resistivity in the range of 10(-3) to 10(1) Omega cm, depending on the ratio of BCl3 to SiCl4 in the gas phase. The ratio of B/Si in the silicon wires was not directly proportional to that in the gas phase, suggesting a non-linear incorporation process of dopant during the vapour-liquid-solid growth. Comparison of our data with published studies using gold catalysts to form doped semiconductor nanowires showed a lower incorporation efficiency of dopant atoms from the gas phase when using the zinc catalyst in vapour-liquid-solid growth.

Drying-induced back flow of colloidal suspensions confined in thin unidirectional drying cellsInoue, Kai; Inasawa, Susumu

ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY
A clear back flow was observed in the thin unidirectional drying cell of a colloidal suspension. Flow around the colloidal-particle packing front was more complex than expected, even though a colloidal suspension was confined in a narrow space with a submillimeter-scale or shorter gap height. We propose that an increase in particle concentration around the packing front induces downward flow, which is the origin for back flow inside the cell. A mathematical model, which considered both a drying induced horizontal flow and a circulation flow caused by a concentration gradient of particles, showed a reasonable agreement with experimental data for the width of the back-flow region. The concentration gradient of particles was not negligible and it generated a rather complicated flow even in a thin drying liquid film.

We investigated the packing structures of silica particles formed by drying colloidal suspensions with various particle volume fractions. We observed many packing domains with different orientations in a film formed from drying a 10 vol% suspension. These domains showed birefringence and were observed as different color domains in optical microscopy images. The size of the packing domains decreased as the initial particle fraction increased. The domains formed immediately after the packing of particles. We propose that the kinetic arrest of particles due to the interaction between particles was one of the main factors determining the size of the packing domains.

Positive and negative birefringence in packed films of binary spherical colloidal particlesInoue, Kai; Inasawa, Susumu

ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY
We have investigated the birefringence in packed films of binary spherical colloidal particles. Particulate films were obtained by drying a mixed suspension of colloidal particles with two different diameters. We observed positive and negative birefringence depending on the diameters and volume ratios of the large and small particles. When the diameters of the large and small particles were similar, the films showed positive birefringence. However, negative birefringence or weakening of positive birefringence was observed in films with a large diameter ratio and an optimal volume fraction of large particles. The large particles were embedded in packed small particles in the negative and weakened positive birefringent films. We propose a packing structure in which a single shell layer of small particles formed around a large particle. Using this model, we estimated the required volume ratio of large particles, and it was in good agreement with the optimal volume fraction. The relation between the packing structure of the binary colloidal particles and the birefringence is discussed.

Experimental and numerical approaches on the effect of gas flow on the formation of tens-square-cm-scale mat of silicon nanowires from SiCl4 and zinc vaporInasawa, Susumu; Inoue, Kai
JOURNAL OF CRYSTAL GROWTH
ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV
We have synthesized a mat of silicon nanowires (approx. 10 mg in weight and 20 cm(2) in size) via the zinc reduction of silicon tetrachloride. The mat consisted of smooth and long nanowires with a median diameter (d(50)) of 40 nm. The flow pattern of gas inside the reactor that was used to form the mat significantly affected the formation of nanowires, even though conditions such as temperature or flow rates were fixed. In the best flow pattern, nanowires preferentially formed on a fixed position in the reactor and the mat gradually thickened as the reaction time increased. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations revealed that both a slow circulation flow of gases and a reaction front formed around the best position in the reactor, which resulted in the largest yield. This suggested that the reaction gases required a longer residence time for the preferential formation of the nanowires. The mechanism of this selective nanowire formation is discussed.

Flow of condensed particles around a packing front visualized by drying colloidal suspensions on a tilted substrateMizuguchi, Takuho; Inasawa, Susumu
SOFT MATTER
ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY
A gravity effect was demonstrated for 10 nm particles drying in colloidal suspensions. The particles were well-dispersed and did not sediment. However, when a suspension was dried on a tilted directional cell, a clear downward flow of particles was observed around the packing front, which was the boundary between the packed particles layer and the suspension. Three particle sizes (10-110 nm) were examined, with the most pronounced effect being on the 10 nm particles. The primary origin of the downflow was attributed to condensation of particles near the packing front and the subsequent increase in the overall density of the condensed layer. Because of the flow, the packing front was not parallel to the drying interface and tilted cracks formed in the packed layer. A mathematical model was proposed that considered conservation of the suspended particles in the condensed layer. Three competing factors of particle transport (advection, particle consumption by packing, and particle transport by the downward flow) were used to explain the experimental results. Overall, the results suggested that simple substrate tilting would be useful to evaluate whether suspended particles are easily packed or not during drying.

ELSEVIER
We investigated the effects of polymer addition on crack formation in particulate films of colloidal silica. Two types of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with different degrees of saponification were compared. Partially saponified PVA (PVA1) suppressed crack formation. In contrast, weaker suppression was observed when we used fully saponified PVA (PVA-2). Centrifugation experiments of colloid-polymer suspensions revealed that PVA-1 adsorbed on particles well whereas PVA-2 was not adsorbed effectively, suggesting that the polymer-particle interactions strongly depended on the content of polymer functional groups. In addition, we observed segregation of PVA-2 between packed particles, which contributed to a sparse packing structure. We did not observe such segregation of PVA-1 and particles were packed more tightly than for PVA-2. These results clearly showed that the affinity between polymer molecules and suspended particles affected both crack formation and packing structures. We also found that adsorption of polymer molecules did not necessarily suppress crack formation. When we added polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) to silica suspensions, we observed much more cracks than in the sample without polymer even though PVP molecules adsorbed on the silica particles. We conclude that adsorption of polymer molecules on suspended particles is preferable, but does not necessarily suppress crack formation. Miscibility between polymer molecules and particles would be a key issue in crack formation and packing structure of colloid-polymer films.

Formation of thicker silicon wires on a sufficiently cooled substrate during the gas phase zinc reduction reaction of SiCl4Shirane, Naoki; Inasawa, Susumu
JOURNAL OF CRYSTAL GROWTH
ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV
In this study, we demonstrate that thick silicon whiskers (wires) formed on a sufficiently cooled substrate. We used the gas phase zinc reduction reaction of SiCl4 at a gas reaction temperature of 910 degrees C. Wires formed via the tip-growth mode in the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. When the substrate was the same temperature as the gas phase, the formation of multiple wires from a single point was observed. Conversely, this multiple formation was not observed, and thicker wires formed, on the sufficiently cooled substrate. We propose that splitting of a zinc catalytic droplet into several smaller ones is one of the main reasons for the formation of multiple wires. Suppression of this splitting on the cooled substrate was considered to be a main reason for the formation of thicker wires. We conducted a numerical approach to predict temperature profiles along a growing wire, because the growth rate of wires was about 5 mm min(-1) and heating owing to the release of the latent heat for solidification was not negligible. Three processes, the conduction in a wire, the convection to the surrounding gas and the radiation via the surface of wire, were considered. We also considered the heating of the growing tip due to solidification as well. Our simulation revealed that the tip temperature of a rapidly growing wire increased and was higher than that of the substrate. The effect of substrate temperature and subsequent temperature profile for a growing wire was discussed.

A quantitative study of enhanced drying flux from a narrow liquid-air interface of colloidal suspensions during directional dryingAbe, Kohei; Inasawa, Susumu

ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY
We evaluate an enhancement of the drying flux from a narrow drying interface. We examine drying of colloidal suspensions in a directional drying cell with various combinations of width and height to change the area of the drying interface. The drying flux changes depending on the height or width of the drying interface. A simple scaling law describes the experimental data quantitatively. Using this effect, we systematically change the drying flux and analyze the formation kinetics of particulate films. There is a threshold drying flux for immediate film formation after the beginning of drying. In addition, the threshold drying flux depends on the initial volume fraction of particles. A kinetics model based on the conservation of particles explains the threshold well.

Drying kinetics of water droplets stabilized by surfactant molecules or solid particles in a thin non-volatile oil layerMiyazaki, Hayato; Inasawa, Susumu
SOFT MATTER
ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY
We have investigated drying of water droplets stabilized by solid particles or surfactant molecules in a thin oil layer. The surfactant-stabilized droplets isotropically shrink, whereas the droplets stabilized by spherical particles severely deform during drying because of buckling of the particulate shells. However, buckling of the shells hardly affects droplet drying. The drying times for complete evaporation are almost the same for water droplets with the same initial diameter and the drying time is independent of the type of surface stabilizer (particles or surfactant). The drying kinetics of the water droplets is well described by mathematical models, in which diffusion of water molecules in the oil phase to the oil-air interface is proposed as the rate-determining process. Droplets with a diameter comparable with the thickness of the oil layer shrink faster than small droplets because of the short diffusion length from the water droplets to the oil-air interface. We also investigated drying of water droplets stabilized by plate-like mica particles. The droplets also buckled but larger shells of mica particles remained compared with those of spherical particles. In addition, a longer drying time is necessary for some droplets stabilized by mica particles. These results indicate the possible effect of the particle morphology on the buckling and drying kinetics of particle-stabilized water droplets.

Kinetics in directional drying of water that contains deformable non-volatile oil dropletsHasegawa, K.; Inasawa, S.
SOFT MATTER
ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY
Herein, we report assessments of the kinetics in directional drying of water that contains non-volatile oil droplets, based on direct observations using a confocal microscope. The water was found to evaporate at a constant rate during the initial stage of drying, after which the evaporation rate decreased. The dispersed oil droplets were compressed and distorted as the surrounding water was lost. Further evaporation of water resulted in coalescence of the oil droplets, with the eventual formation of an oil layer at the drying interface. However, it was apparent that the drying rate decreased even before the formation of this oil layer. We propose that the restricted transport of water via the narrow paths between the distorted oil droplets was responsible for the decreased drying rate. A mathematical model based on foam drainage theory is proposed and describes the experimental data very well. This work also determined that the critical disjoining pressure for the oil droplets is affected by the drying rate, such that higher pressure values are associated with slow drying conditions. The drying kinetics and stability of the dispersed oil droplets are discussed.

Silicon microparticles were formed by reduction of silicon tetrachloride by zinc. Chemical etching of these microparticles produced microparticles with a unique trench structure that showed visible photoluminescence. While we have previously reported the radially developed crystalline structure inside the as-synthesized microparticles, their crystalline structure was not clearly understood. In this study, we directly observed the cross sections of microparticles using a transmission electron microscope. We revealed the existence of a core inside the microparticles. The core showed a well-ordered electron diffraction pattern, which was readily explained by five single crystals rotated by 72 degrees each. We also found that the observed radial lines and bands in the microparticles were caused by dislocations, mainly along the {111} planes. We consider that preferential etching along these radial dislocations is the origin of the formation of microparticles with trench structures.
